  1. Aberdeen play the second match of their pre-seaon tour to Holland against FC Zwolle in Nieuleusen. Kick off is at 14:30. After a comfortable victory over amatuer side DZC 68, Jimmy Calderwood knows it will be a far sterner test tomorrow against Dutch second-tier outfit FC Zwolle.

He told RedTV "It will be a much more difficult test for us than Thursday night. They are always in either of the top two divisions in Holland. I actually started my career as an assistant manager there. They are a great club. They were unlucky last year, I think they got beat in the play-offs to get promotion so it certainly will be a step up in class. They are always a good footballing side. We know how good the Dutch are at keeping the ball so it will be a big test for us but one I am looking forward to.

Dons midfielder Jeffrey de Visscher is doubtful for the match and youngster Peter Pawlett is also struggling with a slight groin strain."Jeffrey got a dead leg on Thursday night but I don't think it is anything to  serious. Peter Pawlett also got a sore one so we will have to see how he is. But I don't think any of them including the trialist Lecsinel, I don't think it will be too long before they are back.

Although it is unlikely Zander Diamond will take part in any of the games in Holland Jimmy expects him be fit for the start of the season but is concerned Stuart Duff's knee problem could be more serious than first thought. "Zander is coming along fine. We will have to see how it goes but at the moment the injury is coming along ok. We are a bit worried about Stuart Duff, more so than Zander at this moment in time."

Meanwhile, Dutch striker Cyon Camero joined up with the team today for a week's trial. The 19-year-old FC Zutphen player spent a week at Pittodrie ealier in the year. "Camero is just back from a holiday and flying in on Friday night so I don't think we will do much with him on Saturday. We will see what numbers are like on Sunday. I might put him on the bench but he will certainly get a run out at some point later in the week."

    Probable line up -

Langfield, Mair, Mulgrew, Kerr, Considine, Severin, Foster, McDonald, Miller, Mackie, J Smith.

Will be interesting to see how we get on against better opposition.

Aberdeen slump ruined holidays for Jimmy Calderwood

Jul 26 2008 By Ian Orr

SCOTT CALDERWOOD revealed his father was so gutted at Aberdeen's slump last season it ruined his summer holiday.

Jimmy was still upset the Dons missed out on a European place and failed to reach two cup finals when he joined his family for a break in Spain.

And Scott insisted his dad's reaction proved how bad he felt about not delivering the ambitions of the Pittodrie club.

Calderwood jnr said: "We were talking to each other when we were on holiday. We always go away for a bit so he can spend some time with the grandkids but he wasn't happy.

"It's a shame because he's more gutted than the supporters at how things went.

They don't see that his holiday has been ruined by what has just happened with Aberdeen.

"He was the first to admit he should have been in finals and perhaps finished third in the SPL and it's killing him as much as the fans.

"I don't know what else the supporters are expecting. He said to me he knows Aberdeen must be in finals and finish third but he's just as sick as everyone else.

"That's because he loves the club. I don't think he'd ever leave that place for another Scottish club.

"He knows how big Aberdeen are but sometimes I don't think the supporters realise how much he loves the the club.

"He also told me the club has never been better off but he's still getting little to spend. He asked me how much more he could have done in terms of the UEFA Cup."

Calderwood jnr, coach of lower league Dutch side DZC 68 beaten 5-0 by the Dons on Thursday night, has had to make his own way in the game as a player and a coach without any favours from his father.

But he's convinced this has prepared him for the challenge of becoming a successful manager in his own right.

He added: "My dad never let me win anything and gave me nothing. When I was playing under him people expected me to get into the team just because of him.

"What they forgot was I had to get past Sammy Hyypia. It's hard to better him and even harder to be better than Jaap Staam. Everything I achieved as a player I did on my own.

"I know Aberdeen quite well because I've watched them a lot and scouted for them so I know how they play.

"I'm a bit like my dad, I don't like to defend too much and despite a 5-0 defeat, we tried to play some football against Aberdeen. Sitting in isn't really my style and I wanted to show people how we could play.

"I've learned a lot from my dad through the years. I played with him at Willem II and made my debut when I was 17.

There's definitely a lot I've picked up from him but I never thought I'd actually be a manager so young.

"I've had a few bad knee injuries although maybe you've got to be honest and say you're not good enough to play at the highest level.

"It was then dad told me to get my badges. I've got one more to get "I've always been the type of guy who tells people what to do on the pitch and encourage them, so it made sense. For me this is a great club to start learning my trade.

"Sometimes managers go straight into a big job when they're not ready for it. For me this is the perfect place to start because I don't just have a team to run, I've got an entire club to take care of.

"I'm young enough to get to a decent level but it all depends what clubs you choose. I could have gone to bigger clubs in the Premier League as a No.3 but that's not for me.

"I'm just like my dad, I want to be a boss. I don't want to be third in command. I know what I want and what I want to achieve here.

  3. I was on a bus home from town and two jambos got on heading to Robertsons for a pint or two. They were talking quite loud and most of their football chat was miss-informed such as Rangers are not allowed to play in English teams even in the UEFA cup...

But anyway the real pathetic conversation was about singing bigoted songs in grounds and them laughing at how the papers only report a 'minority' at Gorgie whist they say "every cunt was singing". It then went downhill as one of them said

Its nae as good when you go to Ibrox as theres mair folk singing the billy boys an all that, you know!

    His mate then strikes up

Aye, I prefer it when yer there and abodys singing god save the queen, Its CLASS when you hear Rangers singing it, and all the England fans at England games.

I didnt know wheter to laugh at them or dispair at them......

Maguire wants to be Lee’s partner

HITMAN: Chris Maguire in action against DZC in Holland.

    More Pictures

CHRIS Maguire hopes his Holland hat-trick has given him the edge over Darren Mackie in the battle to be Lee Miller’s strike partner in the new season.

Maguire’s performance was the highlight of Aberdeen’s 5-0 win over lower league DZC 68 in the opening match of their pre-season tour of Holland.

The 19-year-old is delighted with his first senior hat-trick and the timing of it.

“Lee and I played a lot last season, so we know each other’s game,†said Maguire.

“We worked well together last night. Lee knocked a ball on for me to score and I repaid him by providing the pass that set him up for his goal.

“I would love it if we got the chance to continue together once the season starts.

“I accept I’m only 19 and there are older guys in the squad who will want to partner Lee as well.

“But I feel I would gain from the experience if I got the job week in, week out.

“I want to play fewer reserve games and spend less time on the bench.

“It will be tough because there are going to be four main strikers and only two places up for grabs.

“I will be going all out to show the manager that I am ready to take one of those slots.

“Getting my first hat-trick at first team level will help.

“When I played in the reserves I scored twice a few times but could never get the third goal.

    “I am pleased to finally hit a hat-trick and don’t care that it’s only a pre-season friendly.

“Scoring goals is what keeps strikers in teams and I’m hoping there are a few more to come from me here in Holland.â€

Maguire is maturing fast and highlighted that by accepting manager Jimmy Calderwood’s criticism that he should have added to his hat-trick against DZC.

Maguire said: “There are people out there who think I’m jack the lad and think I know everything.

“That certainly isn’t the case. I know I’m a long way off the standard where I can expect to be a first choice at Pittodrie.

“I listen to every bit of criticism and praise I get from the manager and coaching staff because I enjoy learning every day.

“It’s important I keep doing that, in training and in games.

“I appreciate when any flaws have been identified so I can work on them.â€

With the Dons on their pre season tour to Holland...

The Dons have taken off from Dyce today ahead off on their pre season trip to Holland. A number of new faces are hoping to impress the manager. The squad touch down in Amsterdam, before travelling to their base in Hengelo.  They'll play five matches against Dutch sides, including Vittesse Arnhem. Just before leaving Zander Diamond admitted that a persistent injury could mean he doesn't play in any of the games, in hope of being fully fit for the start of the news season. Boss Jimmy Calderwood comes up against his son Scott in the first game tomorrow night against DZC.

    Hengelo

Seems to be out of the way, doubt anyone will be staying there and bump into them.

  6. New defender wants to return from low country high on calderwood’s list

New recruit Charlie Mulgrew is determined to return from Aberdeen’s pre-season tour of Holland as one of the first names on manager Jimmy Calderwood’s teamsheet.

The 22-year-old former Celtic defender, who made an impressive Dons debut in the 1-0 friendly victory at Brechin on Monday, is part of the Aberdeen party which leaves for Holland this morning.

The Dons will play five matches in 11 days as part of their preparations for the new SPL season – with the first game against amateur outfit DZC, who are managed by Calderwood’s son, Scott, tomorrow evening.

Aberdeen then face second tier side FC Zwolle on Sunday and Premier Division team Vitesse Arnhem next Wednesday before coming up against Calderwood’s former side Rietvogels 24 hours later.

They conclude the tour against First Division team Go Ahead Eagles.

Mulgrew believes the trip will have added importance for himself and other new arrivals Bertrand Bossu, Mark Kerr, Gary MacDonald and Sammy Stewart.

Mulgrew said: “I am looking forward to going to Holland.

“We have a lot of good games and we will no doubt have some tough 90 minutes. The more games the better.

“It will be important for me and the other new players because this trip will bring us all closer together.

“I knew a few of the lads before I came here, but it will be great to get to know every-one at the club properly.

“It is good for me because I want to give everything I can to establish myself in the team.â€

Mulgrew was delighted to come through his debut unscathed at Brechin on Monday, and he was only denied a goal by the woodwork when his free kick thumped the crossbar.

He was pleased with the start to his Dons career, but insists there is more to come from the squad.

He said: “I only started training on Sunday so it was great to get my first match out of the way straight away.

I was close to scoring when I hit the bar, although it was more of a cross. I still would have taken it though.

“I was happy with the free kick and a lot of other things in the game.

“But the most important thing was it was a good match for the players to build up the fitness.

“We could have been a lot better.

“The pitch was a bit sticky but that was no excuse because we could have passed the ball a lot better.

“It is still early and we have a lot of games before the season starts.

“I am very confident we will start playing well.â€

Definitely brings a threat from his free kicks, will have to wait and see about how he gets on at the back in Holland.
