AFC PLEDGE TO UNDERWRITE KEY STAGE OF THE ARENA

    PROJECT FEASIBILITY

The bid to find the most appropriate site for a new community football stadium will continue, after Aberdeen Football Club agreed to underwrite the Council's share of the business case and concept design stages, the key part of the detailed feasibility study that is yet to be awarded.

The move follows the decision today by Aberdeen City Council to review spending on capital projects.

The Arena Project Team, which was set up to spearhead the search for a new stadium, is a joint partnership between Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen Football Club.

A feasibility study is currently being carried out to look into the two designated sites - the Kings' Links near AberdeenBeach and Loirston Loch, Nigg - toanalyse the deliverability of each location.

Business leaders in Aberdeen have pledged their support to the building of a new community stadium.

Chief Executive of Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, Geoff Runcie, said it is crucial to maintain the current progress of the Arena Project.

"A community stadium is a key piece of the region's future economic ambitions. It is consistent with the ACSEF manifesto and delivery plan which were set out last month", he said.

"Given the lead in time for a project of this kind, the feasibility study will make very good business and planning sense. It is a case of 'the sooner, the better' with progress of a purpose build community stadium for the City".

Managing Director of Aberdeen Football Club, Duncan Fraser, stressed that it was essential that the drive to find a new community stadium should continue.

"With the start of the feasibility study we are now really starting to push forward with the Arena Project and discuss how various key partners can get involved and it is vital for Aberdeen Football Club that we don't lose this momentum", he said.

"As the Council is reviewing expenditure on capital projects, we have taken the decision to underwrite the business case and concept design work, which is being tendered at the moment and follows the award last week of the environmental and transport assessments as part of the feasibility process.

This decision by the Club should enable the full feasibility study to be completed by the turn of the year.

"There is a very strong feeling amongst the fans, business leaders, sports organisations and the general public that Aberdeen needs to have a community stadium. The redevelopment of Pittodrie is not an option so it is absolutely crucial that we continue to look at the deliverability of these two sites.

    Jimmy praises Tommy

    STRONG TARGET MAN: Tommy Wright.

    More Pictures

DONS manager Jimmy Calderwood is convinced SPL defenders will hate facing up to new striker Tommy Wright.

The 23-year-old Darlington hitman will become Calderwood’s sixth signing of the summer later this month when he passes a club medical.

Wright will sign a three-year contract once he goes through the formality of the medical, which has been delayed because the player is recovering from a knee operation.

Calderwood assured the Red Army there will be no last minute hitches and promised them the six-footer will prove a handful for opponents.

“Tommy has to do the medical when he is fit but I don’t envisage any problems, it’s just a technicality,†said Calderwood.

“I’ve promised him I won’t even attempt to sign another striker, which shows how confident I am that there won’t be any last minute hitches.

“The lad is going to be a great signing for us because Scottish defenders will hate playing against him.

“Tommy is a strong target man and doesn’t get pushed about by any- one.

“When you add in Lee Miller and Darren Mackie, who aren’t exactly shy when it comes to getting wired in either, it means we have an abundance of forwards who relish the tougher side of the Scottish game.

“There will be occasions when we play all three in the same game and I’m sure the Dons fans will enjoy watching that.â€

Wright will continue his recovery in Darlington while the Dons are at their training camp in Holland.

Calderwood is happy the Dons board agreed to release the cash to land Wright and full-back Charlie Mulgrew, who was signed from Wolves for £50,000.

Calderwood said: “All credit to the board for doing it at a time when few of the clubs outwith the Old Firm are paying transfer fees.

“If they hadn’t agreed to let us pay fees we would have lost out on two very good players.

“It’s a statement of our intent to the supporters.

“They know there is no way we can pay fees like £500,000 for players, like the club did in the past.

“But the directors have proved their ambition by still releasing money to get in Charlie and Tommy and I certainly appreciate that.â€

Calderwood is now working on making more signings and hopes to have another deal concluded quickly.

A loan deal for Liverpool youngster Adam Hammill is understood to be one of the moves being discussed.

Calderwood said: “We will definitely sign one more but there could be two.

“We are in talks, but will only confirm things when we are ready.â€

Meet the young guns ready for action

    TOP TIP: Midfielder Peter Pawlett.

    More Pictures

JIMMY Calderwood is preparing to take a leap of faith in the new season by plundering the Pittodrie youth ranks.

The Dons boss reckons he’s got four rookies on his books who have got what it takes to make the big step up.

Calderwood is still celebrating after rising star Chris Maguire signed a new three-year deal.

But he’s already looking to the future again as he relishes the next batch of rising stars to show real promise

“We have got a number of very talented youngsters on the way through,†said Calderwood.

“Peter Pawlett will develop into a very good player.

“He would have played in the first team last season but had a very busy campaign but we didn’t want to push him too far.

“Young Stirling Smith really looks the part and is left sided which is a bonus.

“Stirling can operate at left back, left midfield or even as a central defender and could have been involved in the first team last season.

“Ryan Jack and Callum McRobbie have also represented Scotland, so have real quality.

“Although he might be younger than the rest, Fraser Fyvie is another good prospect but there’s no pressure on him at all.

“Even though he’s only 15, he played for the Gothenburg Greats during the half-time interval against Manchester United.â€

Calderwood further strengthened his teenage contingent by swooping for Irish kid Sammy Stewart in the summer.

Michael Paton and Stuart Smith have also been tipped to make the big push.

He added: “The conveyor belt of talent at Pittodrie is in full flow again.

“It’s encouraging for the younger ones to see the likes of Chris and Michael get their chance.

“Stuart has also played in the first team while Sammy is still young at only 17.

“Sir Alex Ferguson has always maintained grooming your own players has to be the way forward.

“For Aberdeen it’s just a matter of how they are all going to come together.â€

Pittodrie’s profit making production line has earned well over £1 million for the Dons in the last 12 months.

Homegrown heroes Russell Anderson, Michael Hart and Chris Clark have all moved south to help generate much needed funds.

Dons boss Calderwood would have loved to have kept the star trio, but understands nearly every club in the world needs to sell players.

But one player he has no intention of cashing in on is Maguire.

Coventry City were linked with a £300,000 swoop for the teen forward during the summer before he penned a new three-year deal to fend off potential suitors.

And Calderwood is convinced the young striker is the real deal.

“Chris is an exceptional talent,†said the Pittodrie chief.

“I first noticed his ability when I took over at Aberdeen four years ago.

“He has great enthusiasm for the game and that bit of cheekiness you need.

“Sometimes he’s got too much attitude, but it’s better to be like that than have none whatsoever.

“When he’s on form he’s an exciting talent. Chris is willing to listen and learn which is great.

“It’s a big statement from the club keeping Chris here for another three years.

“It sends out the right message to our other young players here and any club who may be interested in signing one of our younger lads.

“We’re trying to build something at the club, and while there may be times when we have to cash in on a player, it’s not something we’re looking to do in the near future.

“There’s been a lot of very good work done over the years when you look at our first team.

“Andrew Considine, Zander Diamond, Darren Mackie, Richard Foster and Derek Young are all products of the system.

“But guys like Clark, Hart, Kevin McNaughton and Anderson have left even just during my four years at the club.

“We’ve produced a lot of Scotland international players and hope to produce more of that standard in the near future.â€

Bossu set to make first Dons start

    By Charlie Allan

    Published: 18/07/2008

FIRST START: Aberdeen goalkeeper Bertrand Bossu.

    More Pictures

BERTRAND Bossu will make his first start for the Dons in tonight’s friendly against Peterhead at Balmoor (7.45pm).

Manager Jimmy Calderwood admitted he will be delighted if the towering 6ft 7in stopper piled the pressure on Jamie Langfield, who will be on the bench, in the battle to be the club’s first choice in the new season.

“The big fella did well when he came on as a substitute against Manchester United last weekend and it would be good if he kept that going,†said Calderwood.

“Jamie is the man in possession of the No.1 spot at the moment, but it will always come down to who is showing the best form when the season gets underway.â€

Darren Mackie and Jamie Smith will also play up front as Calderwood shuffles his pack for their third pre-season match inside six days.

Calderwood said: “We note the times each player is on the pitch very carefully to make sure they all get their fair share of playing time.

“But it’s also important to field as strong as side as possible because we still want to win every match.

“Peterhead will make it tough because they have a good young manager in Neale Cooper and several ex-Aberdeen players.

“I’m confident it will be an entertaining 90 minutes.â€

Zander Diamond suffered a knock in training so won’t be risked at Peterhead.

New signing Charlie Mulgrew is due to train with the Dons for the first time on Sunday. He will make his debut in Monday’s friendly with Brechin City at Glebe Park.

ABERDEEN: Bossu; Duff, Mair, Considine, Foster, De Visscher, McDonald, Kerr, Maguire, Mackie, J Smith.

Subs: Langfield, Miller, Severin, S Smith, Young, Pawlett.

Jimmy Calderwood this afternoon confirmed that Aberdeen have agreed terms with Darlington for striker Tommy Wright, and the player has agreed personal terms.

"With regards to the Tommy Wright situation - he had a small injury towards the end of last season in his knee and the doctor has taken a look at him today and we are going to get him back in a couple of weeks to look at him again. He is in the middle of his rehab at the moment so it is difficult for the medical staff to fully access him."

"Like Charlie Mulgrew I have been trying for a long time to sign the player so I don't mind waiting another couple of weeks."

"As far as we are concerned Tommy will be joining us before the beginning of the season but he won't be travelling with us to Holland, although we will be in regular contact with him."

"In these kind of situations you can never risk even the smallest of niggles and that is why the deal is not signed and sealed today."

"Tommy will bring a lot of strength to the team as he is a big lad. He is a good holder of the ball and is very strong in the air. He has everything in him to become a big favourite with the fans."

    Fuckin junkie!  >:D

TEENAGER EXPECTS TOUGH COMPETITION FOR STARTING SPOT IN THE ABERDEEN ATTACK

Dons striker’s goal is regular place after signing new deal

    By Michael Gannon

    Published: 17/07/2008

Chris Maguire is determined to fight off competition from any incoming forwards to claim a regular starting role in Aberdeen’s attack.

The 19-year-old signed a three-year contract at Pittodrie yesterday to replace the deal due to expire at the end of the season.

The Dons have added former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew to their squad this week and hope to complete another signing before the weekend by bringing in Darlington attacker Tommy Wright.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood has demanded a decision from the Quakers and Wright in the next 48 hours.

Maguire, meanwhile, has his sights set on establishing himself in the starting line-up this season regardless of the competition.

He said: “I want to keep my place in the team and be first choice.

“In a way I would rather no other forwards came in because it would leave Lee Miller, Darren Mackie and myself to battle for places.

“But if anyone comes in then I am sure we will enjoy the competition to be one of those first two picks.

“I scored a few goals at the end of last season and, hopefully, I can pick up where I left off.

“I had a year left on my contract but I wanted to get my future sorted sooner rather than later.

“It is nice to hear your name linked with other clubs but I am happy at Aberdeen and I am delighted to be here.â€

Calderwood said: “Chris has worked hard and he is ready for the first team.

“He still has things to learn but he is a very good footballer and a wonderful prospect. Giving him a new contract was an important statement to our supporters to show them we want to keep hold of our best young players.â€

Aberdeen have added a fifth match to their pre-season trip to the Netherlands.

The Dons will face Calderwood’s former club SV Rietvogels on Thursday, July 31 (7.0).

    Miller

    Mackie

    Bebo

    We really need another striker........

  8. Would have been a soft pen.

Didn't see the game and I'm pretty glad. Pre-season friendlies are really poor fair unless you make a good out of it.

Really dunno what you are expecting to see in the second game of pre-season mizer.

Other than an excuse to act the cunt.

I didnt expect anything, I'm just arguing that Duff was not man of the match!

    Some more vids:

    Missed opportunity

And a successful long throw  ::)

  9. It's not a tangent, it's an explanation of why players are not as sharp as you would like them to be.  It doesn't seem that you understand the pace at which these players play at.  I'm merely saying I was surprised by the urgency of some of the Dundee players at this early stage of the season, that our players would not be used to playing at that kind of pace so early in the preparations, therefore players are prone to what looks like sloppy mistakes.

In any case, I did not see these so-called numerous sloppy mistakes from Duff, because you seem to be in a minority of people who thought he was rubbish, I'm inclined to think you're making him a target because you don't think he's good enough for AFC, just as you do with JC at the slightest sniff of blood.

I thought another player who was not good enough for us had an ok game, namely Mair.

    Anyway, time for some vids.

The bad: One of Youngs crosses

The Good: Best bit of football in the game and the pen claim

  10. To put it bluntly, that is simplistic rubbish.

Teams like AFC usually gradually build up their opponents from weak to strong over the course of the pre-season to reflect the progress they're making with training.  This year they've done it the wrong way round and JC admitted as such after the Man Utd game.  Fitness-wise Aberdeen and Dundee will be on a par as they are two full-time football clubs.  Therefore the game will be played at an unusually high-tempo for such a game at this stage of the season and players will make mistakes when put under pressure because they are not 80% fit.  For football-minded people that is quite straight-forward.  If you want to see excitement, you don't go to pre-season friendlies.

High tempo? Were you watching the same game? I dont know why your going off on this tangent of the team not being fit and me not understanding football. You said Duff was the best man on the park, I disagreed because he couldn't put simple passes together.

    Early ball to a runner?

Isn't that what you're supposed to do?

    ???

What I meant was way too early/too far infront

  11. There were plenty of others who agree with me.  It seems only a small clique of JC/Duff haters have got on his back here.  He is a fairly composed type of player.  Yes there were one or two wayward passes but that is to be expected when you've only played 45 minutes of football in 6 weeks.  You make allowances for these things in pre-season friendlies.  On the whole he played well.

I dont hate Duff (but possibly JC ) I just don't think is as good as the players he is replacing. If someone says I think he had a good game, I have to disagree. Yes it is only pre-season but that can excuse players being in wrong positions playing ball to early/ late to runners etc. It doesn't however excuse simple football errors of not being able to pass the ball 10 yards to another player, that is simply bad football.

  12. He has banged them in for the reserves, so hopefully he can do the same after a decent run out.

Even budgie used to score quite a few in the reserves  :-\ But as you say if he gets some confidence and the right balls played into him he may do alright.

  13. He tried the hardest last night and quite often does that in games and does have some good poaching ability, however I am worried that he doesnt have the footballing ability outwith that to be a top striker. He's signed on, so lets hope he does well this season.

At least Aberdeen Ladette will be happy

  14. Kerr - looks like he'll be a big player for us, likes to pull the strings and always chose the right option

Kerr was probably the player I was watching most last night to see how he would do. He had an ok game, but really reminded me of Barry Ferguson (in a crab way). Everything was sideways or backwards very little went forwards. He also showed his love of passbacks, not the best thing when Langfield is there and in that strong swirling wind. Thankfully he did only one or two to Langfield, however did a few back to Considine and one was pretty stupid and a faster/fitter opposition striker would have intercepted and been straight through as the passback was played out wide.

The only thing I could argue with is you thinking Duff was out best player - he was poor. Kicking balls quite a few balls out for thrown ins under little to no pressure and unable to complete simple short passes.
