Pilgrims out of race for Maybury

ABERDEEN were today handed a huge boost in their bid to keep Alan Maybury at Pittodrie after Plymouth Argyle rubbished reports linking them with the defender.

Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock has slammed speculation he’s trailing the Republic of Ireland cap, which means the Dons are now in pole position to re-sign the right back.

Jimmy Calderwood is desperate to keep Maybury, now a free agent, who impressed on loan after joining from Leicester City.

But Sturrock, who is still keen on making Russell Anderson’s move to Home Park permanent after his loan from Sunderland, isn’t in the frame for Maybury.

“I don’t normally comment on speculation but I just want to draw a line under this particular rumour,†said Sturrock.

“Alan Maybury will not be a Plymouth player next season.

“He is not on my radar and he never has been.â€

  2. ABERDEEN have offered Chris Maguire a new deal to fend off interest in the talented teen.

Coventry City have been linked with a £300,000 swoop for the 19-year-old Dons striker.

But Willie Miller today said the Scotland youth cap, who is in the final year of his contract, is not for sale at any price.

“We’ve offered Chris an extension to his current deal as he’s out of contract next summer,†said Pittodrie director of football Miller.

“I read about Coventry’s interest but there has been no official approach.â€

Maguire scored four goals for the Dons last term as he started to make his mark in manager Jimmy Calderwood’s plans.

The Glaswegian made 15 starts for the Reds last season and is now aiming to become a permanent fixture in the side.

Miller is hopeful Maguire will sign on again at Pittodrie and claims Coventry would have to offer a lot more than the reported fee if they were to even consider parting with the rising star.

He added: “I would like to think Chris will accept the contract offer and we’ll hear back from him when he returns for pre-season training in a few weeks.

“There’s no way we want to sell him and if Coventry are seriously interested then they would need to add a few zeros on to the figure that’s been quoted.

“Not that we are trying to tout him because we’re not in the game of rearing good young players then selling them for peanuts.

“We want to develop our own good young players and we’ll have more coming through our system in the future.â€

Aberdeen boss Calderwood will have Maguire, Darren Mackie, Lee Miller and Jamie Smith all competing for an attacking berth in the new campaign.

The Dons gaffer is also closing in on Southend’s Richie Foran to join fellow new recruits Gary McDonald, Bertrand Bossu and Sammy Stewart at Pittodrie.

The former Motherwell man would cost £50,000 to lure north and provide further competition for a place in the strikeforce.

But the Irishman will first have to undergo a stringent medical as he’s had recent knee surgery.

Meanwhile, Alan Maybury is reported to have opened talks with English Championship side Plymouth Argyle.

Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock is looking for a right back after losing Paul Connolly to Derby County.

Maybury, a Republic of Ireland international, joined Aberdeen on-loan in January but could now team up with Chris Clark at Home Park.

The former Hearts man made 19 appearances but has since become a free agent after he was released by Leicester City.

The 29-year-old has been offered a new deal by Calderwood but Sturrock is favourite to land his man.

Miller thinks bebo is worth £30 million  :o

  4. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1023024/Aberdeen-Hibs-join-queue-land-Liverpool-winger-Hammill.html

Hibs and Aberdeen are among the clubs set to fight it out for the loan signing of Liverpool winger Adam Hammill.

The 20-year-old had a successful four-month spell at Dunfermline last year, helping the Pars reach the Scottish Cup Final, and could now be set for a return north of the border this summer.

Hammill is back at Anfield after a season-long loan at Southampton but Reds boss Rafa Benitez is exploring the option of farming him out again to gain experience.

But the SPL duo are likely to face English competition from the likes of Swansea, Plymouth, Charlton, Preston and Wolves.

Meanwhile, Hibs striker Abdessalam Benjelloun appears set to quit the club this summer due to a lack of opportunities under manager Mixu Paatelainen.

    http://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/Article.aspx/664398?UserKey=0

ABERDEEN manager Jimmy Calderwood was today warned he could have to wait until July to land Adam Hammill.

The Dons boss is keen to take the Liverpool winger to Pittodrie on loan after he impressed in a similar move to Dunfermline in season 2006/2007.

The 20-year-old is back at Anfield after a stint with Southampton and is awaiting news on his future.

Hammill’s agent Tam Byrne said: “Adam has not long finished his loan spell at Southampton and wants to find out what Liverpool are planning for him.

“He won’t find out until he returns for pre-season training in July as he is on holiday right now.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he is loaned out again, but I haven’t been told to find him a club.

“If he is farmed out on loan again, then there is a chance he could return to Scotland.â€

Hammill still has two years left on his current Anfield contract and he’s keen to eventually crack it on Merseyside.

But boss Rafa Benitez wants the rising star to gain more first team experience.

That’s alerted the Dons who would face serious competition from Hibs, Swansea, Plymouth, Charlton, Preston and Wolves.

  6. Aberdeen target Cowie wants Inverness Caley stay

    By Ally MacLeod - May 27, 2008

Don Cowie insists he wants to stay with Inverness Caley Thistle, despite interest from Aberdeen.

With nine goals to his name, the 25-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a successful first season in Inverness since joining from Ross County last summer.

And he has no plans to follow the likes of John Rankin, Mark Brown and Craig Dargo out the exit door.

[glow=red,2,300]"It's very flattering Aberdeen might be interested. However, I'm just here and want to make my mark at Caley,"[/glow] he said.

"I've still got a year left on my contract and if I can continue to play well then hopefully will offer me a new deal."

I don't understand it. Why does a section of the Aberdeen support prefer Darren Mackie over Steve Lovell? There is no proper reason!

The facts are Steve Lovell is the best striker at our club, yet Calderwood doesn't play him:

Lovell - 0.29 goals per game

Mackie - 0.27 goals per game

Miller - 0.20 goals per game

Maguire - 0.09 goals per game

'But Lovell's goals are rubbish', I hear you cry. It's not that they're rubbish. It's that he's a natural predator that is always in the right place at the right time. Note the countless last minute winners and equalisers since he joined us.

He is also, to my eyes at least, the best one on one finisher. Off the top of my head, his first goal against Rangers, his last minute winner against Hearts at Tynecastle, the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Hearts at Pittodrie last season as well as the goal against Rangers in the last game of the season. You see, to finish one on ones, you need composure. This is something Darren Mackie doesn't only lack, but doesn't have. When the world is at his feet and he only has the keeper to beat, he's like a man on fire. Hibs 3-3 and Celtic 5-1 is all I'll say.

Lovell has played 30 and scored 5 this season. Mackie has played 26 and scored 4. What Soccerbase doesn't tell us is Lovell has played approximately 300 minutes this season, compared to Mackie's 1950.

Jimmy Calderwood obviously has some sort of personal vendetta against Lovell. Don't believe everything you read in the press, as they say. Well, when RedTV were doing the usual pre-match build up to a game this season which Lovell wasn't in the squad for, the commentator told us he saw Lovell in the canteen earlier in the day, when he knew he should have been on the bus on the way to the game. He asked him why he was in the canteen and Lovell replied because he wasn't picked, behind the unfit Mackie and some youth player. The next day Calderwood says in the Evening Express Lovell was struggling to shake off an injury.

When all you Mackie lovers know you've lost the argument, you will say 'Lovell's too lazy, Mackie gives 100% week in week out'. Well, it's not that Lovell is lazy, it's that he doesn't run about pointlessly for 90 minutes. He stands in positions where he can get the ball, and in places the ball is likely to fall to. Mackie on the other hand, is praised for defending and running about. THAT IS NOT HIS JOB. He is meant to score goals and he doesn't.

    I just don't understand it.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood is delighted with the speed of his team rebuilding.

Gary McDonald has signed from Oldham, while a medical is all that will stop Richie Foran completing his £50,000 move from Southend next month.

French goalkeeper Bertrand Bossu and midfielder Stuart Duff should sign contracts with the club this week with Irishman Alan Maybury’s future the only one causing concern.

The former Hearts and Leicester City full back is still in talks with the club about a deal having impressed since his arrival in January.

Calderwood said: “We are making good progress on a number of fronts, which is pleasing and I expect Willie Miller (director of football) to complete a lot of business this week.

“All being well, we should have a lot of the squad places filled very quickly which I am very pleased about.â€

Calderwood has offered goalkeeper Bossu a two-year deal on the insistence of goalkeeper coach Jim Leighton, and hopes the 27-year-old will provide competition for Jamie Langfield.

He said: “Jim was very positive about Bertrand. He hadn’t trained for three weeks when he arrived here.

“He lives in Calais, but he was keen to come and within a couple of hours of speaking to him his wife had driven him through the tunnel to Gatwick and he caught a plane up to Aberdeen.

“Jim pummelled him in training to test his character and he handled it really well.

“Our goalkeeping coach is not the cheeriest person at the best of times, but he was really positive about Bertrand and said he was worth taking a gamble on as he was technically excellent.â€

Calderwood is also backing Duff to make the same sort of impact as Derek Young next season following the former Dundee United player’s impressive end to the campaign.

He said: “Alex Smith, a man whose opinion I rate very highly, told me Stuart had been really unlucky at Tannadice and was worth taking on.

“When he came in, the first thing he did was be on the wrong end of a ricochet which gifted Hearts a 1-0 win and straight away some supporters were on his back.

“I talked to him about it and he said he could handle it. Since then he has gone on to silence his critics, just as Derek Young has done. I am delighted for him.

“He knows we do not have a lot of money to throw about at the club, but he is really keen to sign here.

“Stuart is an Aberdeen supporter and he is living his dream by playing for the club. “He played really well in the last couple of games and he has a good eye for goal. He played wide left towards the end of the season and he gets forward into good positions. A good finisher, I expect him to get among the goals next season.â€

Former Motherwell forward Foran has agreed terms on his move north and once the formalities of his move have been completed, Calderwood expects the player to make a big impact.

  10. Plymouth Argyle boss Paul Sturrock is keeping tabs on former Leicester City defender Alan Maybury.

The 29-year old right-back is a free agent after being released by the Foxes at the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international joined Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen on-loan in January, making 19 appearances but has since become a free agent after failing to win a new contract at the Walkers Stadium.

Aberdeen are favourites to sign Maybury in a permanent deal but sources in Scotland indicate that Sturrock is monitoring the situation and could make a move for the versatile defender.

Maybury started his career at Leeds United, playing in the Premier League and European Cup for the Elland Road outfit. After loan spells at Reading and Crewe Alexandra, Maybury moved to Hearts in 2001 in a £100,000 transfer making 134 appearances before moving to Leicester in 2005.

Maybury, who can also operate at left-back and in midfield, was a regular for Leicester in the Championship but was placed on the transfer list last summer by then manager Martin Allen.

Sturrock is in the market for a right-back following the departure of Paul Connolly and has already been linked with a move for Swindon Town's Miguel Comminges.
