  1. Jimmy: Lay off the local heroes

Calderwood tells boo boys to lay off Duff and Mair

    By Charlie Allan

    Published: 24/04/2008

JIMMY CALDERWOOD today called on the Red Army to stop picking on their local heroes.

The Aberdeen manager reckons criticism from supporters has hindered local pair Lee Mair and Stuart Duff as they attempt to get themselves established at Pittodrie.

The Aberdonian duo thought their dreams had come true when they joined their local club this season.

But there has only been despair for the Dons-daft duo, who have struggled to hold down a regular first team spots and found themselves the targets of some vicious abuse from sections of the Aberdeen support.

Both will take comfort from news that Jimmy Calderwood is convinced they can yet become major players.

Calderwood however, wants the Red Army to play their part in helping the former Dundee United duo make their mark.

“If the Dons fans gave Lee and Stuart a bit more backing it would really help to push them along,†said Calderwood.

“I don’t know what it is in Aberdeen with the local lads getting so much stick. I’ve never seen the likes of it in my life.

“You would think people here would be happy to see some of their own coming through. That’s what happens in other parts of the country but here the local lads seem to get picked on.

“Darren Mackie’s had it and Richard Foster’s also had spells when he was targeted.

“ I’ve been told that sort of stuff has hindered local lads at Pittodrie for years.

“Lee and Stuart have suffered more than most. Stuart doesn’t seem to have been given much of a chance, even though he is a good player.

“Like everyone else, you need to have confidence to make your mark at a new club and that’s when fans can help. I can assure our supporters Lee and Stuart are as passionate as they are about Aberdeen.

“They are living their dream when they pull on that red shirt so it must hurt a lot when they find themselves targets for abuse.â€

Duff, signed from United in January on a free transfer, made a bad blunder in his debut against Hearts which did not help.

His pass-back was intercepted by Christian Nade, who scored the only goal.

Calderwood said: “That’s the only thing Stuart has really done wrong.

“The sad thing is, the Hearts player would never have been in the position to score if he hadn’t been lazy wandering out from an offside position.

“Stuart had been playing well, so it’s cruel the fans have given him pelters.

“Stuart, to his credit, has continued to get stuck in at training and has been playing well for the reserves.

“He has shown a great attitude.â€

Duff’s contract is due to expire in the summer, so he was grateful to get a start in last weekend’s 1-0 SPL defeat by Celtic.

He played as an attacking midfielder and was encouraged to get forward to support striker Lee Miller.

Calderwood said: “The performance at Celtic Park hasn’t done Stuart’s chances of getting a new contract any harm.

“Given that he is under pressure to get a new deal, I had to be fair on Stuart and play him in his best position.

“He got forward well and into great positions.â€

Mair’s hopes of becoming a regular have been hampered by injuries, but Calderwood is sure he will show why the Dons were so happy to snap him up.

Calderwood said: “Lee still has a year to go in his contract, so will definitely be here next season.

“He is a good defender and has the sort of experience we have missed badly for most of the season.

“If Lee had stayed fit he would have been involved because he is strong, aggressive and brave when it comes to defending at set pieces.â€

Yes they may be Aberdeen fans Jimmy, but if was to put on a red jersey and play for the dons I would get abuse too as I would be rank rotten. They are just not good enough.

Goalie scores twice in one match

A schoolboy goalkeeper has turned to scoring goals as well as saving them - by hitting the back of the opposition's net twice in one match.

It is thought that Sean Fitzgerald, 11, could have made history during the match against Broughty United.

He kicked the ball from his end, then watched it bounce twice before going into the net at the other end. He then repeated his wonder shot.

The youngster plays for Carnoustie Panmure Boys Club Under-12s. He is also part of Aberdeen FC's Youth Development Academy.

Sean told the BBC Scotland news website how he managed to score his goals.

"My dad said to kick it up to the forwards, so I kicked it as far as I could," he said.

"With a bit of the wind it took a bounce over the strikers and then it took another huge bounce and bounced over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

"I was astonished at what I did. My dad was quite jealous, so I did the exact same thing again.

"I was just amazed at what I can achieve as a goalkeeper."

In a reversal of the norm, the strikers then had to run down the length of the pitch to jump on Sean's back and congratulate him.

The Burnside Primary School pupil is a Dundee United fan ( :hammer: ). His favourite player is Sean Dillon - because they have the same name and he feels Dillon is a great defender.

Father, Michael Fitzgerald, said he was "speechless" when his son scored the goals.

He said: "A cross between jubilation and a little bit of embarrassment.

"More embarrassed for the other goalkeeper, because goalkeepers aren't supposed to score from that far."

However the youngster is confident he can score even more goals.

He said: "I'd need to have a bit of the wind. We live beside the sea on the east coast so it's usually quite windy down here.

"So whenever I've got the wind behind me I'm going to always have another try to see if I can get another one of those goals."

An arab and pictured with Sally McMoist! .........as long he develops and is one of ours, who cares. Well done loon!

  4. Surprise there hasnt been more vitriol on this thread. No matter what you think of Calderwood, Jackie McNamara has been a fucking parasite on this great club. He showed his utter contempt for the club and the city by trying to commute from Edinburgh everyday (which isna actually true cos he hardly ever trained with the rest of the squad). He took a very good wage from us knowing full well that his heart wasnt in it and his fitness was nowhere near the standard required to play in the SPL. He tried to use us as one last pay day. And he showed the watching nation in the semi final how far past it he really is, and after such a shite performance didnt even have the balls to sit on the bench with his team mates and headed straight down the tunnel.

Jackie McNamara your a fucking parasitic excuse of a man. Thank fuck you've left my club. Fuck off

You fell better with that off your chest?  :lolabove::clap:

Personally' date=' I'm pleased with the way I've played over the season, I've been pretty consistent, my form's been not too bad. Scoring goals helps, it keeps the confidence up, but just playing a lot of games is the big thing. That's been the difference for me to be fair, being out there week after week. That helps you reach a level and stay there, so I'm happy enough with the way things have gone.[/quote']

Now am I the only person that thinks his consistency has been crap? Scored 11 goals in 46 appearances this season and most of them were in the league around Christmas time.

The only thing he consistently does is fall over at the slightest hint of a challenge.

  6. JC is in the P&J talking about Brines holding his hands up and that it should mean that Zanders outspokenness should be excused by the SFA.

Dons hope ref howler can help Diamond

    By Michael Gannon

    Published: 23/04/2008

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood hopes referee Iain Brines’s admission he got it wrong on Saturday will save Zander Diamond from receiving a hefty fine.

Diamond was scathing in his criticism of Brines following the Dons’ 1-0 defeat by Celtic at Parkhead after the defender had a legitimate late equaliser mistakenly ruled out for supposed handball.

Diamond’s fiery comments will earn him a date at Hampden to appear in front of a SFA disciplinary committee. Brines, however, admitted yesterday he made the wrong decision over the alleged handball.

The official said: “On reflection, and having had the opportunity to view the incident on television, I fully accept I called this incident completely wrong.

“Having adopted the position I did, it didn’t allow me to gain the best view of what happened during the incident. It is clear the goal should not have been disallowed.â€

Brines’s admission was scant consolation for the Dons, who suffered a harsh and costly defeat, but it could prevent Diamond from being hit too hard in the pocket.

Calderwood said: “I would hope they would take it into account when dealing with Zander. He was hurting and he is a winner.

“I don’t think he had much choice but you have got to respect him (Iain Brines) for owning up to his mistake.

“It does not make much difference to us. It still cost us dearly, but I think referees get a lot more respect when they admit it was the wrong decision.â€

Meanwhile, Stuart Duff’s impressive performance at Celtic Park at the weekend has reignited his chances of a new contract at Pittodrie, according to Calderwood.

The versatile former Dundee United player produced his best display for the Dons since joining in January.

Duff’s deal expires at the end of the season and he is tipped to join the ever-increasing number of players heading for the Pittodrie exit.

The 26-year-old utility man’s future depends on the quality and quantity of new arrivals but Calderwood said he could yet play his way into the club’s plans.

Calderwood said: “I thought Stuart did very well. I think that was his best position on Saturday, getting forward from midfield.

“He is a good player and it is a confidence thing with Stuart. I thought he was as good as anyone on Saturday. He gets into positions where he can be dangerous and he knows how to score goals.

“He has not done his chances any harm but there are still a few games to go.

“He knows what I think of him, but we will see. We are conducting a wide search for players and it is not just about filling spaces, it is about bringing in quality players.â€

Former Aberdeen defender Michael Hart is set to make his long-awaited debut for Preston North End against Ipswich Town on Saturday after finally recovering from a hip injury.

  7. McNamara quits Dons and eyes role in coaching

JACKIE McNamara is seeking a move into coaching next season after leaving Aberdeen yesterday by mutual consent with the Pittodrie club.

The former Celtic captain, who joined Aberdeen last summer on a Bosman free transfer from Wolves, had another year left on his contract but has terminated it with the agreement of manager Jimmy Calderwood.

McNamara felt the strain of almost daily

commuting to Aberdeen from his home near Edinburgh was undermining his enjoyment of the final years of his playing career and the 34-year-old is now hoping to join a club in the Central Belt.

He intends to continue playing for at least one more season, but is also keen to pave the way for a move into management by securing a player-coach role with his next club.

"I've left Aberdeen on good terms with Jimmy Calderwood and the club," McNamara told The Scotsman last night. "The travelling had become a problem, especially in terms of recovering from injuries, and I feel it is best I move on.

"I know people will say I should have lived in Aberdeen more, but that's not why I came back to Scotland last year. I wanted to spend more time with my family.

"Unfortunately it didn't work out as I'd hoped, but it's something you just have to put down to experience and move on. I'd like to keep playing for another year and I'm also interested in doing some coaching."

McNamara made 24 appearances for Aberdeen, making only 12 Clydesdale Bank Premier League starts, but very few of them were in his favoured holding midfield role which he had anticipated being deployed in when he decided to sign for the Pittodrie club.

His on-field Aberdeen career ended on a sour note ten days ago when he was substituted during the 4-3 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat against Queen of the South and uncharacteristically stormed straight down the Hampden tunnel in a public display of disapproval at the decision, accompanied by the boos of some Aberdeen fans.

Despite his considerable disappointment, however, McNamara is determined to maintain a positive relationship with his now former club.

"I'll be back at Pittodrie later this week to tie up a few details," he said. "I'll say my farewells to the players and staff and I wish Aberdeen all the best."

  8. What an utter complete shambles. I sent an email to the SFA (asking them to forward it to the SPL as it appears they do not have an email address?!?!) complaining about the fact it makes a mockery of our league and nation that it is ok for some and not for others. I mean, firstly, we were denied an opportunity to postpone a game, and also, Celtic (not that I care, but for the purpose of arguments sake) a few years back had to complete their fixtures with no assistance when they lost in the final? Why the sudden change of heart. Hun Cunts.  :hammer:

There was me thinking you were Dutch?

  9. From the BBC website:

Ref wrong to rule out Dons 'goal'

A Brines mistake denied Aberdeen a point at Celtic Park

Referee Iain Brines has admitted he wrongly disallowed the goal which could have finished Celtic's title challenge.

Brines penalised Zander Diamond for handball seconds before the Aberdeen defender struck what would have been a last-minute equaliser at Celtic Park.

However, Brines has used the Scottish FA website to explain his mistake.

"Having had the opportunity to view the incident via television, I fully accept that I called this incident completely wrong," he said.

Celtic's 1-0 win moved them two points clear at the top of the table, although Rangers have played three games less.

The decision left Diamond and his colleagues enraged and the defender was critical of Brines after the game.

The referee has since told the 'whistleblower' section of the SFA's website: "From the angle I had adopted, I observed the Aberdeen player Diamond jump to meet the ball and I believed he used his hand to aid the ball's flight beyond him.

"Immediately I blew my whistle awarding a free-kick to Celtic.

"The majority of players reacted to the whistle by stopping - the exception being Diamond who placed the ball into the Celtic goal.

"Having adopted the position I did, it didn't allow me to gain the best view of what happened during the incident.

"It is clear that the goal should not have been disallowed."

In a post-match interview that may land Diamond in hot water, the Aberdeen man said: "Saying I used my hand is an absolute joke and that sums him up.

"I thought he had a poor game.

"The decision is unbelievable. If that's one of Scotland's top officials, I think we're in trouble."

    DISALLOWED GOAL

    Tuesday, 22 Apr 2008

Disallowed goals can often be contentious decisions that rely on split second judgement by the officials in charge of the match. Iain Brines made such a decision this weekend during the match between Celtic and Aberdeen when he ruled out a late goal by Diamond for handball. After reviewing the decision again on television, Iain Brines now concedes that this was an incorrect call.

    Speaking today, Iain Brines said:

"In the final minute of the match, Aberdeen were attacking within the Celtic half of the field of play. The ball was on the left wing and was crossed into the packed Celtic penalty area. From the angle I had adopted I observed the Aberdeen player Diamond jump to meet the ball and I believed he used his hand to aid the ball's flight beyond him.

"Immediately I blew my whistle awarding a free-kick to Celtic. The majority of players reacted to the whistle by stopping - the exception being Diamond who placed the ball into the Celtic goal.

"On reflection and having had the opportunity to view the incident via television, I fully accept that I called this incident completely wrong. Having adopted the position I did, it didn't allow me to gain the best view of what happened during the incident. It is clear that the goal should not have been disallowed."

Commenting on the decision, Hugh Dallas of the Scottish FA Referee Development Department said:

"Refereeing a match requires our officials to rely on their judgement and positioning to make decisions as they see them within a split second. Sometimes errors are made and it is right to admit when you have made an incorrect call.

Backtrack all you want you twat, you still wouldn't have disallowed it at the other end  :hammer:

  10. Surely this should have been vetoed by the other teams.

We didn't get our game postponed for the UEFA cup so the huns should just have to play.

We probably agreed to it although it does postpone the teams holiday.

Exactly we got turned down, but they get it for the 2nd time  :haterangers:

  11. Just switched on the telly and they were doing a peice on Hamilton getting up to the SPL and got onto talking about building an extra 'stand' and ripping up the plastic pitch for grass.

This is meant to happen next week then Rangers and Celtic will find out what kind of pitch they will be playing on
    .

What? Is it not Hamiltons pitch? Are the old-infirm the only teams in the SPL? Fuck off BBC, West Coast Media scum! :hammer:
