    SPL Team of the Week

by Brian Etherson, 17 March 2008

    Goalkeeper: Steve Banks – Hearts

Had very little to do in the first half of the game and had no chance with Jim Hamilton’s goal but he still produced the goods when called upon. Very rarely does Banks have an off day for Hearts and that is one thing they can always call upon, the consistency of Steve Banks.

    Defender: Darren Barr – Falkirk

Barr formed a solid partnership with Kenny Milne against Inverness and showed that he has the ability to read the game very well and his partner in defence. Barr had to be very careful up against Dennis Wyness and Marius Niculae but dealt with the threat extremely well indeed, again which is a testament to an overall fine display.

    Defender: Chris Hogg – Hibernian

Another outstanding performance from Hogg, who just seems to be getting better and better this season and the best is yet to come from Hogg. He may not be the tallest central defender Hibernian has, but what he lacks in height, he more than makes up for with gusty displays like this. If Rob Jones decides to further his career down south, Mixu Paatelainen has a natural replacement in Hogg as he is a natural leader.

    Defender: Xander Diamond – Aberdeen

Starting to look the Diamond of old when he partnered Russell Anderson at the heart of the Dons defence and that will be a welcome sight for Jimmy Calderwood as he strolled through the game against Gretna and was solid throughout. It was hardly his toughest test of the season, but still he managed to keep the visitors at bay and was one of the very few who sparkled on the day.

    Defender: Grant Munro – Inverness

A solid performance by Munro who cleaned up everything going against Falkirk and the defender is one of those players who can be relied upon week-in, week-out without fail. Very steady in defence and quite useful in attack as well and is always one of the first names on the team-sheet.

Right Midfield – Saulius Mikoliunas – Hearts

Mikoliunas got all the credits for the right reason at the start of his Tynecastle career but has had very little involvement this season for one reason or another. Still getting attention for his Hampden antics but had the last laugh with a late equaliser against St Mirren. The Lithuanian needs to raise his standard and start winning critics over again with his skill which we all know he is more than capable of.

    Midfield: Danny Hall – Gretna

Incredible display for Gretna bearing in mind what they are going through and for having the guts to play in the face of adversity I would consider having the whole Gretna side as our SPL Team of the Week for that alone. Hall was very composed on the ball and made several key interceptions. He works extremely hard and I think his display was that of a true professional and someone who does play for the jersey.

    Midfield: Mehdi Taouil – Kilmarnock

Another great find by Jim Jefferies as Taouil linked up well with his team-mates and showed some classy touches as well. Taouil is forever looking to be involved and always never too far away from the action. Next season I think we will see what he really is all about.

Midfield: Gary Mason – St Mirren

I still reckon this was one of Gus MacPherson’s best signings for the club. He keeps it simple in the midfield and digs in very well indeed and then allows those with the skill to play the game. Mason is a very industrious player and will always put a shift in for you, hence the reason MacPherson snapped him up.

    Striker: Merouane Zemmama – Hibernian

Zemmama is a nightmare to play against and Kilmarnock found this out on Saturday. His low centre of gravity enables him to turn quickly which more often than not gets him the kind of attention often associated with very frustrated defenders. Zemmama is constantly buzzing around the pitch looking for chances to break through, however he is prone to attempting the occasional flick or two, but somehow his colleagues do not seem to be on the same wavelength as him and it very often breaks down.

Striker: Jim Hamilton – St Mirren

Hamilton might be short of match practice but his vast experience allows him to counteract that and used that to great effect in the game. Enjoyed his goal against one of his old clubs that very nearly grabbed them all three points until a certain Lithuanian stepped in. Hamilton is a great asset to have in your weaponry with his aerial presence which is always very difficult for defenders to deal with.

don't know what the spelling is about? Is his ma Xena warrior princess?

But good to see him in there, even though as the article says it wasnt the hardest game for him. Also very strange to see no old-infirm player in a team of the week!

  2. PACE is required Aluko on from the start, to (hopefully) get crosses into the box for Lovell to show us what he's made of.

I agree Aluko on from the start as he is willing to run at players and attack. At the moment I am in two minds on how the game is going to go, but I think we will put up a decent show tomorrow.

p.s. Remember and do the predictor folks.

  3. we've got ian ian scanlon on the wing, on the wing,

we've got ian ian scanlon on the wing on the wing,

    scanlon on the wing,

    scanlon on the wing,

    we've got ian scan-o-lon,

    scanlon on the wing!

Was I singing this with you 4am Friday morning in Cafe Schiller?

  4. Aberdeen's game with Gretna this afternoon goes ahead despite the doubts that surrounded the fixture this week. There are a few unfamiliar names included in the visiting squad but Aberdeen will be concentrating on their own need to pick up the three points leaving Gretna with their own problems to ponder as the season winds towards a conclusion.

Jimmy Calderwood makes only one change to the side that drew with Celtic in the Scottish Cup last weekend. The suspended Barry Nicholson returns to replace the injured Jamie Smith while Mackie, Lovell and McNamara return from injury to take their place on the bench. Joining them on the sidelines are Langfield, Mair, Aluko and Walker. Today's referee is Douglas McDonald and the full starting line up is:

Aberdeen Soutar, Maybury, Diamond, Considine, Touzani, Foster, Severin, Nicholson, Miller, Maguire, de Visscher.

Gretna : Krysiak, Griffiths, Naughton, Hall, Meynell, Wilkinson, Osman, Deverdicks, McGill, Baldacchino, Makinwa.

  5. Sympathy for Borderers must not stop top-six push

The Grim Reaper may be looming over Gretna but Josh Walker believes Aberdeen’s hopes of a top-six finish will be dead and buried if they fail to take maximum points in their remaining matches before the SPL spilt.

Crisis-hit Gretna have managed to survive another weekend after cobbling together a team to head for Pittodrie today but Walker insisted the Dons have enough concerns of their own.

Jimmy Calderwood’s men are eighth in the SPL table, three points behind sixth-placed Falkirk and 12 behind Motherwell in fourth.

After today’s match, Aberdeen host St Mirren, travel to Caley Thistle and then face Falkirk at Pittodrie in their final game before the SPL splits.

Walker, who is hoping a deal can be struck with parent club Middlesbrough to remain at Pittodrie next season, still believes Aberdeen can qualify for Europe through their league position and he insisted the uncertainty surrounding today’s match has not affected the Dons players.

Walker said: “We have four games to the split and we have to win all four to make sure we get into that top six.

“Every game is important for us now and we need three points in each of them.

“Before every game the team talk involves getting back into Europe because the lads want to have that feeling again they have enjoyed this year. Hopefully, we can get in the top six and then push on and qualify for the Uefa Cup for next season.

“You don’t like to see clubs going through what Gretna are going through and you feel for the players and everyone involve. It is not a nice situation and, hopefully, they will get through it.â€

He added: “I think Jimmy Calderwood is going to talk to my manager Gareth Southgate in the next week or so. I have enjoyed being here and would love to stay.â€

Walker admitted he is looking forward to Tuesday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final replay against Celtic at Parkhead. After watching his Middlesbrough team-mates crash at home to Cardiff in the FA Cup, he is now hoping to pull off a similar shock in Glasgow.

He said: “I spoke to a few of the lads who played against Cardiff and they are obviously disappointed. We will be in their position on Tuesday as we will be the underdogs. Hopefully, we can do to Celtic what Cardiff did to Middlesbrough.â€

Middlesbrough winger Josh Walker is hoping he will be allowed to spend next season on loan at Aberdeen.

The teenager linked up with the Dons in January and is enjoying the opportunity to play regular first-team football.

He has made just one senior appearance for Boro and is keen to continue his education at Pittodrie at next term.

"I've had a chat with Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood and he knows I'd love to stay here next season," Walker told the club's official website.

    Learning curve

"It's not really in my hands as it's down to Middlesbrough, but if they agree I'll jump at the chance to extend my stay.

"I'll be speaking to Boro boss Gareth Southgate about my situation, but I was very keen to come here in the first place and I'm just as keen to stay longer.

"I've played in four different competitions in six weeks here and every game has been different - from the technical play of Bayern Munich to the really physical approach of Dundee United.

"It's been a great learning curve, but there is much more to be acquired and Aberdeen would be a great place to continue my education."

  8. http://www.setantasports.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/03/13/SPL-Paul-Davies-on-Gretna-offer/?facets/sport-space/great-britain-locale/football/

A football consortium fronted by football agent Paul Davies has revealed they could launch a rescue bid for blighted SPL side Gretna.

The Scottish outfit went into administration on Wednesday and the club face closure by the close of business on Thursday unless they can raise £30,000 to pay overdue wages and meet the costs of the club’s away trip to Aberdeen on Saturday.

After Brooks Mileson’s funding was pulled abruptly Davies believes the side can be still be saved before time runs out.

"We're shocked this has come out, we only spoke to the administrator at 2pm on Wednesday,†Davies told The Sun.

"We have a strong interest but we've not looked at the figures.â€

He added: "We'll pay lower wages and look to link up with a Premiership side. This is a serious bid."
