  1. Have to agree with slim, was rubbish at times, however the passing and finishing for the goal was top drawer. As some boy on the BBC highlights said, if that had been Arsenal people would have been slobbering over it for weeks.

  2. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football-news/2008/03/10/jeffrey-de-visscher-i-thought-my-goal-would-win-it-for-aberdeen-86908-20346500/

JEFFREY DE VISSCHER took one look at yesterday's match-day programme and knew what he wanted.

On the cover were two of his fellow Dutchmen, Theo Snelders and Hans Gillhaus, who won the Scottish Cup with Aberdeen back in 1990.

The young midfielder decided there and then he was also going to be a Scottish Cup hero.

And with just 90 seconds left of this incredible cup tie, de Visscher allowed himself to believe that it was his goal which had taken the Dons to a semi-final meeting with First Division Queen of the South.

And he even began to think about being 180 minutes away from glory and, at the worst, another crack at Europe.

Then another Dutchman, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, slid the ball over the line and destroyed all those dreams.

De Visscher said: "It was a good cross and a good finish by Celtic but it's unbelievably disappointing.

"Everyone thought we'd won and for a few minutes I didn't know where I was with my mind.

"It would be great to win a cup with Aberdeen in my first year.

"I hear stories about Theo Snelders and Hans Gillhaus and what they achieved. I was told if we get to a final we will take 25,000 fans.

"There is still an opportunity but this was a big chance.

"It's not nice that another Dutchman scored in the final seconds. I didn't say anything to Jan at the end.

"I was just so disappointed I didn't want to see him. I'll keep it to myself what I'd like to say to him!

"It's still possible to win but we will have to play better in Glasgow and hopefully get a few goals."

  3. Aye, I agree we did enough to win it today. Boruc made some amazing saves along with Souter.

Personally I didn't think the ref had a bad game, but I would like to see the free kick at the end again. However, it all comes down to (not blaming him as he was under pressure) Severin missing the ball after the free kick. If he had connected the ball was away and we would have been through.

  4. We woz still robbed :(

No we weren't, it was a good game with lots of chances on both sides. Souter had a stand out game and made some some amazing saves. If only we played like that every week!

  5. JIMMY CALDERWOOD insists he can lead his side to Hampden - but says even a win over Celtic is only enough to keep fans off his back for a week.

The Aberdeen boss is as frustrated as any punter at the lack of consistency from his side in the SPL.

But Caldo believes his men are as good as any team on their day and urged his stars to prove it.

He said: "Our league form has been disappointing all season. But on any given day we can match anyone.

"We can cause an upset against Celtic today and put a smile on the fans' faces - even if it's only for a week!"

And the Dons gaffer says the level of expectation at the club drives him on.

He said: "Our fans still expect a cup final and an SPL title every year.

It's great to have that but annoying at times too."

    Eh, no we dont!

Aberdeen Draw Cup Inspiration From Copenhagen, Reveals Scott Severin

ABERDEEN captain Scott Severin says the Dons will need to take no risks in front of goal if they are to have a hope of beating Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

But he believes the side can draw inspiration from their impressive UEFA Cup run earlier this season to fire them up for Pittodrie cup clash.

Aberdeen go into the game having beaten the Glasgow side just twice in their previous eight Scottish Cup ties at Pittodrie, and with Celtic still smarting from their Champions League exit to Barcelona.

But the midfielder says Aberdeen are fired up by the prospect of facing Celtic, even if they know the size of task ahead of them.

"Nobody is in any doubt that it will take a massive performance on our behalf to get through but we're really looking forward to it," the Dons skipper said.

"The pressure is on Celtic rather than us, nobody expects us to come through, so all we can do is give it our best shot. It's very like the Copenhagen game in that way, everything comes down to just the 90 minute.

"That night we created five or six chances and took four of them, and it's not just about the boys up front but about all of us taking the chances when they come up. If we can create the same number of chances and be more clinical, it could make for a very interesting afternoon."

The question is will the real Scott Severin turn up or the lazy bastard Severin?

Jimmy Calderwood Ready For Aberdeen Contract Rebels Showdown

Mar 7 2008 By Ian Orr

JIMMY CALDERWOOD will demand to know next week if Lee Miller and Barry Nicholson will accept contract offers or move on in the summer.

The Aberdeen boss is desperate for his star striker and midfielder to commit to new deals, having become mainstays in his starting lineup.

Miller, who has scored nine goals, and Nicholson, who has weighed in with six goals, remain pivotal in Calderwood's future plans.

But they have been reluctant to sign the new terms that have been put on the table.

Now the time has come for answers so the Dons boss knows where he needs to strengthen in the summer and how much he will have to spend. Calderwood plans to to have talks with the duo after Sunday's Scottish Cup quarter-final showdown with Celtic at Pittodrie.

He said: "We want to know what is happening and Lee and Barry know that.

"We will wait until after the Celtic game to speak with them so hopefully we will know more then."

Miller's decision might also sway Calder wood's decision on whether to retain Steve Lovell.

The Englishman will find out next week if he has a future with the club - when the manager kick-starts his preparations for next season.

The striker looked on his way out, having fallen behind Miller and Darren Mackie in the pecking order.

But the 27-year-old came in from the cold in the draw against Mother well and scored against Rangers in the 3-1 defeat at Ibrox last Saturday.

That raised Lovell's popularity with the Dons fans and also made the manager reconsider his plans to let the Englishman go in the summer.

Calderwood said: "We will see what happens this time next week.

"We will speak to different people and Steve himself and I will take it from there."

Calderwood admits his side have not performed at their peak this season and insisted the situation is not as bad as has been suggested.

He blamed a string of injury problems for the club's plight and said: "We have had a nightmare run of injuries and it has been impossible at times.

"We had so many injuries that you are too scared to train the players.

"It has been horrendous at times and it is a fact that if you lose your best players then you are going to struggle.

"Because of the number of players we have used and the number of games we are playing in it has cost us."

One of Calderwood's players is convinced all is not lost and that the Dons will reach the Scottish Cup Final.

Derek Young was advised by his boss to book an early holiday after it was revealed knee ligament injury will rule him out for at least six weeks.

But Young, back with the Dons for a second spell, rejected the offer because he is desperate to make it third time lucky at Hampden after losing two finals there with Dunfermline.

Calderwood said: "I was kidding him by saying his season was over but I knew by the look he shot me that he doesn't think so.

"If we can progress in the Cup then I am sure he will be fighting to be back for the latter stages of the competitions.

"Derek has been involved in two finals with Dunfermline and would love to play in another one for the chance to get a winner's medal at last.

"He is very low at the moment, which is not like him but, hopefully, we can win against Celtic on Sunday and give him something to fight for."

Now I'm confused. Did Lee Miller not sign a new contract?

  8. As much as i don't rate young he's been one of our best players this season (say's a lot). Would have him in the midfield before an uninterested Severin anyday even though he hasn't talent.

Just because he hasn't been as shite as we thought he would be, doesn't mean he is any good. Some games he has been ok, but in some he has been dreadful and for me his positioning has been worse than the shit guy I play 5's with. just because he runs about lots and tries more than others, doesn't make him good enough for the team.

Anyway, in the metro this morning he has not booked his summer holiday as he is convinced he will be playing in the cup final.

  9. Still thinks we will get pumped though

It's almost seven years since Aberdeen's last home win over Sunday's Scottish Cup opponents Celtic.

Derek Whyte captained an Ebbe Skovdahl side back in December 2001 to victory over Martin O'Neill's men at Pittodrie.

And the former Celt reckons Jimmy Calderwood's troops will find it tough to break that seven-year itch this weekend.

Derek, now based in Dubai, will watch the game on television and would love nothing more than to see the Dons stun Gordon Strachan's troops.

The former Scotland cap, now 39, has warned the Reds they'll need to stop Aussie ace Scott McDonald to stand any chance of causing a cup upset.

"I really fear for Aberdeen because Celtic are on such a great roll," said Whyte.

"They are scoring goals regularly and seem to be high on confidence especially on the domestic front.

"Gordon Strachan is lucky to have a huge budget to work with and it has already shown in terms of the gulf in class between Celtic and Aberdeen.

"I feel sorry for Jimmy Calderwood but things ultimately hinge on finances.

"It's like buying a new car - you would always choose a Bentley if you could afford it but Aberdeen are having to shop in a more affordable market.

"Not that long ago Scott McDonald would have been exactly the type of player Aberdeen would have gone for.

"But at £700,000 he was out of their price range although he has proved to be worth every penny at Celtic.

"If Aberdeen can stop him on Sunday then they might have a chance but it's going to be tough.

"I'd love to see Aberdeen beat Celtic , but it's a tall order."

Derek is praying the Dons awake from their slumber on Sunday in what is their last chance to grab glory this season.

He added: "I really rate Jimmy Calderwood as a manager and want him to succeed. He's rightly been demanding consistency from his players which he hasn't been getting.

"They lost to Hibs after drawing with Bayern Munich at home then lost to Kilmarnock after going out of Europe.

"It's hard for him as he's been given very little investment to work with."

Derek will always remember the wild scenes at the end of Aberdeen's last home victory over Celtic.

But he was denied a place in the famous victory train on the Pittodrie pitch.

However, he's still hoping to see similar scenes seconds after the final whistle on Sunday.

He said: "It's amazing to think it's been almost seven years since Aberdeen's last home win over Celtic.

"I can remember the goals we scored that night.

"Robbie Winters got the first with a penalty before Darren Mackie charged down keeper Rab Douglas to get the second.

"The match was just before Christmas and all the fans told us we had given them the best present ever by beating Celtic.

"It was a special time at the club as there was a real spirit within the dressing room.

"Eugene Dadi displayed that when he started the train celebration after the game.

"Unfortunately I missed that as I received a late red card but that didn't dampen my enjoyment of the celebrations."

  10. On the way to the bus this morning I had my i-pod on shuffle and had Golden retriever by the super furry animals playing when a golden retriever ran up to me with a stick for it to throw. I may have sang 'sheees a goo-ooo-ooo-oolden retriver' out loud at said dog of which the owner may have heard, because she was staring at me strangely.

Dons ace Alan Maybury can silence Celtic star Aiden McGeady in Sunday's Scottish Cup showdown says boss Jimmy Calderwood.

The Hoops wing king tormented Aberdeen in last month's 5-1 SPL victory at Pittodrie.

Maybury was pitched in against the 21-year-old in only his first league appearance for the Dons.

But after establishing himself as a first choice pick at right back, Jimmy Calderwood is confident Maybury can halt McGeady this time.

"Alan did reasonably well against Aiden although he wasn't offered much protection from his team-mates," said Calderwood.

"But he's certainly got the capabilities to cancel him completely on Sunday and if he could, it would improve our chances of winning the game greatly.

"It's not going to be easy especially the way Aiden has been performing.

"For everyone connected with Celtic and the neutrals, he was a joy to watch against us.

"But Alan is much sharper now after enjoying a run of games in the first team so I'm confident he'll handle the test at the weekend."

Calderwood also paid tribute to his counterpart Strachan despite the Champions League exit to Barcelona.

The Bhoys lost 1-0 at the Nou Camp to crash out of Europe but that hasn't stopped Calderwood marvelling at the way Strachan's side has performed.

He's been impressed with the quality squad he's assembled at Parkhead who he reckons will rise again on the continent.

He added: "Gordon has done a fantastic job as he has quality cover in nearly every position on the pitch.

"Perhaps the only role he's not doubled up in is left back.

"But when it comes to creative players he has lots of choice.

"Shunsuke Nakamura, Paul Hartley and Massimo Donati are all threats and we'll have to watch them all at the weekend.

"Celtic will be disappointed at going out of Europe but they'll be more determined to do well domestically."

Calderwood is waiting on news of his injured players ahead of the Scottish Cup crunch.

Steve Lovell, who scored against Rangers, now has a chance of playing after recovering from an ankle knock.

Jamie Smith and Derek Young are also battling back from hamstring problems but Darren Mackie is out of the Celtic match.
