Darren Mackie can save Dons Season says Drew Jarvie ....
Reekie_Red replied to 19afc03's topic in Aberdeen Football Club
I'd happily have a lazy, constantly offside mercenary like Stavrum playing up front who scores 17 goals in 28 league games, than a lazy, constantly off-form avid Dons fan like Mackie playing up front who is only really remembered for two goals that he scored 2-and-a-half years ago. -
Whilst his final 18 months at the club was shite, the three years preceding this were the best the club has experienced in a decade-and-a-half in terms of consistency and obvious signs of stability and improvement of the product both on the field and the club off the field. Too many Dons fans are quick to forget just how good we were under Jimmy at his peak. Both sides of the Old Firm are, as a direct result of Jimmy's efforts, scared of Pittodrie!

Agreed. He's the closest thing to a hero most young Aberdeen fans will have these days. Whilst some of us older fans will remember the likes of Theo, Charlie Nic, Ricco and Brian Grant, and further back to the Gothenburg Greats, there's no doubt that to many Gen-X and Gen-Y fans, Jess is the closest thing they've had to a true AFC legend.

When he's in the mood, he's brilliant. His performance vs Rangers was incredible. He took his goal pretty well. But I didn't count a single ball that came near him that he didn't win. And his general play and positioning was a joy to watch, testing the laws of the game and generally being a real handful for the Rangers defence. But we see this Lee Miller far too rarely. He reminds me in a way of Robbie Winters. When he was on fire, Winters was devastating, one of the best strikers in the country with blistering pace and an unstoppable shot. But we only really saw this Robbie Winters when he was putting himself in the shop window. This is the same for pretty much every striker w've had in the past 15-16 years, bar Stavrum. -
From what I read, Obiefule only signed for HBK after hearing that McGhee showed preference towards Paul Marshall. International-status doesn't necessarily mean "good player". Rememember, we were continually reminded that Laurent D'Jaffo was a Benin International. Ilian Kiriakov was the Bulgarian international who apparently played Gazza off the park once. And I'm sure someone's still going to refer to Mackie as a "former Scotland U21 internationalist"

Bisconti scored 1 goal in about 50 games ... nobody doubted his ability. Stephen Glass didn't score that many in his time either, but he was one of our most loved and valuable wingers of the post-Smith/Scott era.

87 Bertrand Bossu Absolutely shite. However I did actually see him make one save against Rangers, which make him one position better than .... 88 Nicky Walker Hard to believe he was Scotland's third-choice keeper behind Leighton and Goram. Thankfully, neither Leighton nor Goram were injured that much, so Walker never got a game. Can now be seen girning on the front of shortbread tins around the world.

Of course, I'd prefer it if ten teams finished higher in the SPL than Rangers and Celtic, and it was a double-relegation season! That would be immense!! -

As much as I really cannae fuckin stand Hearts, I'd much rather have them in the league than the likes of Killie, St Mirren, Livingston, St Johnstone, etc. Killie especially have done their time in the SPL. It's about time they fucked off and saved the travelling Red Army a fortune. For the SPL to be marketable, the league needs Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs and Dundee Utd to be in the mix. The likes of St Mirren and Killie add absolutely no value to the league whatsoever with their 32 fans. -
He's a former ROI U19 and England U20, so I'd be keen to see what he's capable of with those credentials. A loan deal like Aluko and Walker had would suit both parties fine. It would let us see what he's made of whilst not commiting us to a pile of steaming shite for several years.

I had a look on the boston.com website for this picture as that's where it's stored. But I can't find it. TBH it could be NZ, it could be Scotland, it could be the southern tip of Argentina. Who knows!

482 fans? We brought more than that to our pre-season friendly in Denmark against Farum! This is a club in serious trouble. They can't buy a win. They've got more red cards than a Red Ultras display. They've got the biggest debt in the country. Can't be that long until Romanov says enough is enough, and leaves them in Division 1 with a crippling debt -
Can you appeal second-yellows? Or is it only straight reds you can appeal?
-
Completely agree here. Whilst Ifil's red card vs Celtic was totally deserved, the second yellow for Kerr vs Rangers was NEVER a bookable offense. It was a standard tackle that could've been successful, had no malice in it, and did not stop a certain goal from occurring ... why then did he get booked? Is there no official appeal process we can go through to challenge the SFA refs' decisions?
-
Interesting note on a certain other non-Dons website suggested that McGhee went to Parkhead with no intention of leaving with anything. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but lest ye forget who his first-choice club was before he came to Aberdeen.
-
Surely strikers should be our priority at the moment! We've played 14 SPL games this season, but only scored 11 times! That's shocking. Miller 3 McDonald 2 Mulgrew 2 Aluko 2 Considine 1 Maguire 1 That's a pretty pathetic statistic when only one of our recognised strikers has scored more than one goal so far this season! Once we're back to full fitness and suspensions have cleared up, our defence will look pretty fuckin awesome. But even at full strength, our strikeforce is laughable. I think this has to be our primary focus in January.
-
Yeah, that's what I reckon BB. As I say, with the right mentoring, he could've been a true legend of AFC (and that's saying something, given the caliber of some of our legends!). He had all the ability to match the best that AFC's ever had. He just didn't have the attitude to show that ability when it counted. I was quite happy when he left as he was an expensive player to have sitting on the subs bench. But I'll always thank him for those rare moments of pure brilliance that he gave us.
-
My favourites were probably his first game vs St Mirren in the CIS Cup, cos it was then that we saw how devastating his attacking-runs were. Also the free-kicks against Motherwell and Kilmarnock in successive weeks.
-
With the right mentoring, I think he could've been one of the true Pittodrie legends.
