Aluko likely to miss start of the season
Reekie_Red replied to manc_don's topic in Aberdeen Football Club
Can only bump up his profile, price and experience. So a month out is a small price for us to pay for having a player gain that sort on their CV. -
Glad to hear it's Toronto who are looking to sign him. I would hate to see him line up against us in the SPL for Hibs or United or someone like that. Sods law, whoever signs him will immediately figure out why he gets injured so often, come up with a crazy idea to fix it "like a raised insert on his boot" (who would've thought that was the solution to Boothy's issues) and he'll pop three goals past us cos we don't have a fuckin clue how to defend against him.

Yeah, but at least we got into Europe on merit of us reaching the final of the country's main cup competition. Getting in to Europe because your team is "nice" and your fans are "nice" should not be grounds for entry into Europe. Maybe a Blue Peter badge would be more appropriate

I don't agree with this. I mind when we were in the running for a fair-play Euro place a few years ago (was it the 99-00 season?). We were the "fairest" team in the league. In my view it was cos we were so shite, we just couldnae get near the ball to actually try to tackle anyone. Maybe a financial incentive for the most fair team in the most fair nation. But a Euro place? Nah, that's just a joke. Motherwell will get tanned in Europe. Do we really want a bottom six team ruining the hard work th at was done to bring Scotland's co-efficient up last year? Sure, winners and/or cup runners up. But a team that has come nowhere near to winning anything?? I'd rather we were there on merit.

Ah Panda, our old chum. Been a while since I've read anything of his. Pretty well constructed article, tbh ... certainly a good step forward from his old TMWTM magazine which was, to be fair, powder puff. I especially agree with the following: I think we all agree that Jimmy has brought respectability back to Pittodrie. Too long, we've been toiling at the wrong end of the table, and been the laughing stock of the SPL. At least Jimmy has made some quality signings and has given the Red Army some very memorable moments (Copenhagen, Bayern, Dnipro ... not to mention regular home wins against the ugly sisters). But we're pretty much all in agreement that Jimmy is not the man to take Aberdeen further. He's built a good foundation for the next man to work from. We just need to be very very careful about who that next man is, otherwise we risk undoing all the work JC has done, and returning to the dark days of Paterson, Skovdahl, Alex Miller and Aitken.

Did the tortoise look anything like Scott Severin? Or was it walking too fast to be Seve?

Smith is arguably our most naturally gifted footballer. He has the ability to turn games in our favour at the drop of a hat ... something we've not seen since Eoin Jess was at the club. But Smith is just too injury prone for a cash-strapped club to have on their books. 14 starts this season is not a good haul for the amount of money we've paid him. Time to cut him free and let another club pay for a handful of good games per season.

Completely agree. The three goals were very difficult for Langfield to do anything about. Maybe he could've shouted a bit louder to let Consi know he was behind him. But Consi was only doing what any defender should be doing ... trying to clear the ball out of his area. The second was a goal out of nothing for McDonald and Langfield did well to get as close as he did, considering how late he would've seen it. And the third ... well, when you're one-on-one with the goalie it's all down to how good a striker you are. McDonald's goal-tally this season shows he clearly knows how to find the back of the net. So again, I can't really fault Langfield for that goal. I just wish Maguire and Wright would take some tips from Scott McDonald on how to finish when you're 1-on-1 with the keeper.

Of the defence, Consi looked the shakiest. But in saying that, at least he got stuck in a few times. I didn't even remember seeing Severin's face on the tele once during that match. He might as well have not been involved in that match, he was so anonymous. Langfield was at his best today, imho, and was probably worthy of MOTM from an Aberdeen perspective. Good job from Maguire too. I thought he and Aluko were a fairly decent partnership. Although there were a couple of chances that Maguire passed up that would've been buried had they falled to Miller or Mackie. Our biggest failure today really was our lack of depth. We had Celtic by the balls in the first half. But our fitness was beginning to show half way thru the second half. And when we got tired, we pulled on Pawlett and Paton. When Celtic got tired they pulled on Loovens and Maloney. That's the difference in squad-depths today which really won the match. Had we had more capable defenders on the bench today, COnsi would've probably been taken off half way thru the second half. His legs gave way towards the end and Scott MacDonald took advantage. Miller's back from suspension next game. Smith and Mackie should be back. That should allow Aluko to move back into midfield and let our defence get back to almost normal (ie as normal as it can be without Diamond). The season's nae over yet!!

He might as well have not been involved in that match, he was so anonymous. If we had better cover for defence on the bench, Consi would've been taken off ages ago. Lets face it, Scott MacDonald took advantage of the fact that Consi's leg's simply gave way to fatigue towards the end.

If only Maguire could emulate Jess' form from his first stint at Pittodrie. Then I'd be singing young Chris' praises. Until then, I shall remain on the fence about "Not Phil"

What's Alan Maybury up to these days? He was handy for us in his short stint. Soccerbase shows he's signed for Colchester on a free in December. Nae chance of a free then, unless it was only a short-term deal from Colchester.

I'll say. At least Barry Nic admitted well before he left that he wanted to move down south. And at least Barry Nic gave his all to the club he was playing for at the time. Seve you've got as much charisma as a fuckin earth-worm

I really am in two minds. One side of me says that Aberdeen FC belongs at the beach. The Dons are as much a part of Aberdeen beach as the Codonas and the Beach Ball Room. But the other side of me says, so long as they build a pub out there that's close to the stadium, and provide adequate rail and/or bus links to the stadium from the city, it'll be a good choice with plenty of room for future expansion and carparks and shit like that.
