I don't believe either of those things. I don't believe we should be so fatalist as to think that a longer term manager couldn't do at least as much as craigy broon in jan to fill the gaps in our squad that mean a run of results has us pushing up the table and actively strengthening in terms of pre-cons to build for next season. This is an over all failure I think sealed McGhee's fate. He was scrabbling about for players in the summer as if he was brand new to the job. He should've done more contract dealing before the season ended. Finding players to fill the positions we so obviously need is our priority. Not doing this will mean we go down no matter who is in charge. An 'until the end of the season' manager has no mandate to buy players in jan or sign on pre-con and would only attract players also until the end of the season. Leaving us up shit creek next season with A.N Other coach in charge who has no time to build a squad. A manager of this sort would also virtually guarantee we cannot extend the contracts of those who are on a free in the summer. Other than Diamond I think we should be keeping these players. So Mr A.N Other would have an even more impossible job to do than otherwise.

So yeah definately agree with ajja that you HAVE to have the board providing fans with the product they want. And the ID of the manager is a part of that product, but the main thing is what goes on on the park. The counter example being Man City. Fans are fickle enough to get over the meddling if the team is winning. We don't have the billions to spend so the balance is harder to get. But the board must be seen to be putting the club first. The revelation that the board took the financial hit to swap managers - if true - goes a long way to restoring my faith in them. I'm sick of feeling like everyone is pulling in different directions and I know we can't afford to sack and replace the majority of the squad overnight, but if we have certain individual players unwilling to work to their best depending on how they feel about the manager, the board have to take the financial hit to sack and replace them too. Otherwise it's an exercise in futility to change managers. Or worse, it's reinforcing the negative and destructive attitudes of those players.

I would love to have Steve Clark as manager. Basically kept West Ham going and very highly rated by mourinho at chelsea. Someone who knows what he's doing in terms of training players certainly. Unproven under the spotlight of management though. Can't see him taking it though so Yogi or Stark are what I expect to see.
