"McGhee to be named Dons manager" - Sunday Herald
baggy89 replied to Sonoftherock's topic in Aberdeen Football Club
Thing is though there are plenty of us who are old enough to remember the good times who were happy with what Calderwood was doing, in the big picture. Yeah we were fucking disappointed by the cup exits, these things happen, maybe not with the same predictable regularity, but still they happen. Other than that I think Jimmy was meeting more than acceptable targets. You can argue about budgets, as far as I can tell Twice fuck-all is still probably fuck-all especially in modern football terms, and lets be honest all a bigger budget means for non-OF teams is that your best players are slightly better. If they are injured or suffer a loss of form your left with your own equivalent of the average SPL clogger, seen turning out up and down the country. Add in losing your best players to the second best League in the world TM. (The Championship) every second year, resulting in you starting from scratch again, it is going to be very hard to maintain 3rd every season. Everywhere I read moans about how money is killing the game but folk don't seem to equate that reality to their own club. Just imagine if the club had no debt the team that Jimmy could have had. Without getting into naming players I think there has been enough quality that we just couldn't afford to keep, gone, that if they had stayed we could have been challenging the OF now. I also think that Jimmy was beginning to put together a decent lot of young players presumably buoyed by his long term contract, whether Jimmy can take credit for that in full, or if Miller should also take some of the credit is to be debated, but it will be interesting to see how much the new man benefits from this and whether Jimmy will actually get any credit. I just want my club back onto a sound financial footing, debt free, and able to actually mount a sustained challenge. Otherwise we risk falling further behind with no chance of ever getting back to our rightful place. Jimmy was providing that hope I'm keeping everything crossed the new man can maintain it. -
I don't think there will be any point scoring, there will be no I told you so's. However for everyone, the minimum expectations, must have increased. I'd like to think though that those that were willing to grant Jimmy his "achievements". Will be as willing to grant someone else, meeting those same expectations, the same respect. In the long term if McGhee, or whoever, can maintain what Jimmy did for this club there will be no complaints from me. I'd like to think that the club will not go backwards and hope that we can maybe improve, however slight. I'm not sure if the rabid mob will be as willing to afford the latest incumbent the same respect. Especially if as is predicted it is McGhee, given his quite obvious prostituting of himself for the Celtic job. Honestly, how long before I read "Bin the bubba jawed Tim cunt! He's taken us as far as he can, one good season at Motherwell he's been shit everywhere else". As far as I can see the only point scoring here is coming from Brian, esteemed leader of the JMG 3! Future NAFCMG ring leader. Frankly, I actually doubt whether anyone would even bother trawling through the threads in 3 years time to point score against you!! To answer the original question I'd like to think we would make the Europa League, finish at least Fourth in the league and make at least Quarter finals in both cup competitions. I'd like at least Paton and Pawlett to be regular starters by the end of the season, and the club to post favourable financial figures for the financial year 09/10. i.e. Things that I think Jimmy was perfectly capable of providing.

When I read it I figured Hearts, Rangers and Utd. Granted Rangers was maybe slightly hopeful and based on them desperately trying to flog a player in Jan and it did say "Top" SPL club. Might explain why the SPL were so quick to dip into their pockets though??

Only 40 minutes to go I would assume, may as well wait till next Thursday now.

Doesn't Slyfox=SuperKev?

Plenty of Aberdeen supporters own shirts that just don't wear them, probably. I could invent some statistics like, 6 out of 10 OF minks own their club shirts and 6 out of 6 wear them on a daily basis 6 out of 10 Aberdeen fans own their club shirts but 0 out of 6 wear it on a daily basis, because: a) we have more style, b) we have more than one set of clothes c) we wash regularly d) we don't wish to dress like an 8 year old schoolboy e) no one cares if we are Protestant or Catholic or any other fucking religion because... f) we're intelligent.

If it's true that he's applied, I'd put Mike Newell in my top selections. Not much in his record to argue against in fact I'd say he was about the only one with a CV to argue for. As far as I can remember he took Luton into the play-offs despite them being in administration and selling their best players, then he got them promoted (was this with a record points total?). Finished his first season top half of the championship, the following season any player with any value was sold, again as far as I can remember, without his agreement and he either walked because of it or was sacked for speaking out? At Grimsby this season they were as good as relegated in November, probably stole our record for longest start to a season without a win , then Newell came in and they survived the drop.

Presumably will be looking for a new job in the not too distant future?
-
I'd say Hughes would be infinitely better than McAllister. I'm not sure what's worse not getting Wolves promoted with Hayward's millions or not getting Leeds promoted with the best squad in the division then drifting in midtable the following season. What Hughes lacks in identifying the right players (as proved this season) he makes up for in coaching what he has (as proved last season). McAllister obviously lacks both. I think the praise for Black from Cov fans comes from him doing much better than McAllister could with the same team. And the cunt missed that penalty against the guffies in '96. I'd rather have Ardilles than McAllister.
-
I'm sure that has more to do with them having no other clothes to wear and displaying their religion, than showing pride in their team.

I'm surprised at the gist of the original post. I assumed it would be something like... Hand over your Darren Mackie at your local Highland league club before July 30th and face no charges for crimes against football. Agree though it will be interesting to find out what the new manager will make of him. Imagine if it was McGhee and he played him week-in, week-out.
-
I think the post re Windass went something along the lines of "Met Deano out on Saturday night. Asked if he was up here to be interviewed for the Managers job, he said no comment. Make of that what you will!"
-
Somebody on the hat was saying that bets had stopped being taken on Levein, I think it was in the thread "Craig Levein...". The rabidness hasn't subsided over there though, it appears the boy that started it got banned for having the temerity to suggest someone other than Mark McGhee would be the next Aberdeen manager. At least it was kept open so those that agreed could be called cunts .
-
I honestly believe Windass would be a decent appointment as a coach. An honest and hard working individual who knows how lucky and privileged he is to be playing football for a living. Worked under some decent coaches and has bothered his arse to get all his UEFA Badges. Desperate to get into the management side of the game and you know he'd put his heart and soul into it.
-
Wasn't it Ardilles that got Swindle promoted to the original first division before they were relegated two divisions for financial irregularities including making illegal payment to their players? Thus giving them their nickname. I think he also got the baggies promoted before going to Tottenham and playing formations such as 1-10 , according to the guardian. Couldn't tell you anything that he's done since then mind.
-
We had the manager for that, why sack him and replace him with another. Now he has gone I'd rather we took a calculated risk on an unknown quantity. Whoever it is might turn about to be another "steady appointment", maybe he'll turn out to be a fuck up, or maybe he'll take us to the next level. McGhee as far as I'm concerned has failed to take Wolves, Brighton and to a certain extent Millwall and Motherwell to "the next level". He has proved that he can maintain them at a level consistent with their financial backing but is this not what Jimmy was sacked for? I fully expect a "cups blah blah blah" type response but McGhee has not won a cup and he managed in the English Lower leagues. If his sides were any good in cups he'd surely have won an LDV vans trophy or at least reached the final or even a regional final? As for tactics, was he not derided by our fans for his tactical naivety in his two European games this season?
-
I think what I was trying to get at in my inebriated state was whether folk thought, that if the board were to appoint McGhee. Would it be seen as an appeasement of the fans. i.e. Someone who is likely to do no better or worse than Calderwood but who's not likely to cause the fan's much consternation (due to his AFC background), therefore giving the board less hassle. With the added advantage of more time to get the club back onto a more stable financial footing. Rather than taking a calculated risk on someone who is younger who may take us to the fabled next level, or equally as likely take us back to the dark old days. Folk say Miller's appointment as DoF was an appeasement of the fans. This to me, if it happens, smells no different.

Fitba strips are made of Polyester and Nylon, what is "not cheap" about that. And really what difference does it make anyway? They're for children.
-
Honestly not what I meant, well maybe a wee dig . I've been trying to limit my curious glances over there and have instead been speaking to my Dad and a few folk from back home. All of whom I'm not aware use fitba forums, I'm the only cunt with bairns and nothing better to do of an evening. I really hope the board are listening to all applicants and make an informed decision based on the interviewees qualifications, personality and achievements. Not what is on their doorstep with the perceived achievements those candidates may bring. Top six five years in a row wasn't enough for the aforementioned JMG mob. BUT why would less than that be enough for the less rabid members of our support? Not sure where I'm going with this now, night night!
-
EXACTLY my point. I'd rather we took a chance on someone who "might" improve things than someone who has shown his managerial capabilities are basically the same as Calderwood's. Otherwise what was the point in shelling out getting rid of Jimmy?
-
Not sure what your point is bobby. I may not keep up with folk as well as I did, at the same time I'd like to think I'm not as far out of touch with reality that I'm taking AFCHAT as gospel. As far as I'm aware, from home, the clamour for McGhee is not confined to the inbreds on our cousins, sisters, aunties, son's site.
-
So would you say taking a tenth placed Murderwell team to third place in his first season may be comparable to Jimmy taking an eleventh placed Dons team to fourth place in his first season? No more of a success if you ask me.
-
I'm getting pretty fed up with the clamour for McGhee. I don't know much about his tenures at Reading or Leicester other than he started at Reading 17 years ago. Surely enough time to prove himself IF he was genuinely any good. At Wolves he couldn't spend Haywards millions well enough to even get into the Premiership let alone the first place those millions should have guaranteed him. Hayward was offering an unlimited budget to buy a whole new team if he had won promotion. Talk about motivation for the manager!!! Ultimately got the sack for not achieving targets. After TWO years without work he joined Millwall and did what Jenny Kackett nearly did this season. Got a good Millwall team promoted. His best players got sold (sound familiar) and he walked. Then he went to Brighton, probably the only genuine success in his career, Leon Knight scoring a shed load in his first season away from Chelsea, almost replacing the irreplaceable Zamora. Couldn't turn round Brightons fortunes without the Coppell inspired Zamora despite spending a LOT more and was sacked in his third season. Motherwell, well I'm sure you can all tell me more about that tenure. One, out of the ordinary season, after another season on the scrapheap. Then back to mediocre bottom six performances.
-
I' sure your right, but its not going to stop me postin the following... I hope it's neither the names I mentioned. Please let the board have more ambition than either of those no-marks. Thats not to say that for those that think McGhee is the "ideal candidate", Yogi is not an "ideal second choice". Bar McGhee's Aberdeen link what is the difference? Yogi had a decent second season in charge of Falkirk?

I think Mark McGhee or John Hughes as the only options highlights how insular and narrow minded we are. If thiv nae played fir Aiberdeen or bin ah manahger in Scotland their nae yease!
