  1. Craig Brown and his players are giving their full backing to the supporter's campaign to make Saturday's first home game of the season against Ross County a sellout.

Craig told RedWeb: "Nothing can beat the excitement of the first home game of the season and I am positive the fans will be there in their numbers to get a look at the summer signings and hoping for a good result so it is vital we don't let them down.

"The players will be doing their utmost to give the supporters something to cheer about to reward them for the unwavering loyalty they have shown towards the club, particularly this summer."

Andrew Considine proudly gave his backing to the 'Sell out Saturday' initiative and told RedWeb:

"This is a fantastic initiative to encourage the supporters to pack out Pittodrie and all other SPL grounds as we kick off the 2012/2013 season.

"The support the Red Army continue to give us is unrivalled but it is crucial they really show their backing this season, not just for one game, but for the entire campaign, as it really has never been more important"

"I have been lucky enough to play in some great stadiums and in front of massive crowds but now is the time for fans to really make a noise and show their support.

  2. They beat Hearts 3-1 this afternoon with goals from Joe Shaugnessy, Declan McManus and Nicky Low.

superb, hearts have been one of the best u19s the last few years have they not?

    Hearts U20s 1-3 Aberdeen U20s

Aberdeen u120s this afternoon beat Hearts 3-1 this afternoon at New Victoria Park, Newtongrange.

A superb result for Neil Cooper's men in the opening game of the new look Clydesdale Bank Youth League.

All the goals come in the second half. Joe Shaugnessy opened the scoring. Then the league's top scorer last season Declan McManus scored a second before Nicky Low added a quite brilliant third. The midfielder ran from the half way line, beat a number of players before firing home. Hearts scored a late consolation goal in the final minute.

    Full report to follow

Team: Rogers, Murray, Duguid, Brown, Shaughnessy, Rumsby, Fraser, O'Neill, McManus, Smith, Low

Subs Gibbons, Rose, McMahon, Ferries, Hamilton, Campanile, MacAulay

  3. Not sure I did read something about them stopping selling beer at half 8 and giving you half a hour to drink up so maybe they will make an announcement.

Bit that I think will be interesting is not carrying folk if they think they are drunk. Who will be making that decision and what will their criteria be for deciding who is to drunk to travel who is fine.

Only time I can see it being an issue is when we change trains on our way back from inverness.  Even we won't be so pissed we can't get on the train at Aberdeen............surely

  4. I'm not necessarily talking about Team GB or any particular nation.  People who devote themselves to sporting excellence as opposed to undereducated but talented people who spend equal time in the bookies as they do on the training pitch, spending money paid to them from clubs in debt which in turn comes from Sky TV subscription and advertising money, which comes from us anyway.  Regardless of whether it comes from the govt or the private sector, it invariably comes from us.

And anyway, the bit in bold just kind of confirms the type of attitude that pervades in this country (UK).  What sports aren't considered "minority"?  Football, Rugby (Union & League), Golf, Swimming?  I would argue that Tennis is a minority sport, in terms of participation at least, especially in Scotland.  More people play badminton.

If we're using cycling as the example here - is cycling really a minority sport?  I would expect everybody here can ride a bike.  I imagine most of us own a bike and I suspect that a great number of kids and young adults will be inspired by the performances of the cyclists.  I personally love cycling and along with swimming (and arguably running), it is the most accessible sport imaginable to people of all ages.

I quite agree, my use of minority sports was in the widely used form to describe pretty much everything except football, perhaps I should have put it in italics or add (sic).

I'm not knocking any of the sportsman or the massive achievements this last wk or so, it's been bloody brilliant. I'm just cynical about the way the govt have been pushing cash towards certain sports, sports that will get very little from the punter on a regular basis and their motives behind it

  5.

Fuck me that's a glass-half-empty way of thinking about it. The more money that's in any "minority" sport is a good thing IMO my opinion. Surely that encourages participation or even enables participation.

Don't get me wrong I think it's amazing what British Cycling and others have done, I just feel that from a government point of view alot of this was aimed at making us look good rather than any real desire to improve the nations health and wellbeing.  If they were they would put real money into grass roots and more importantly facilities which everyone and anyone could access.

There are promising signs that many have taken inspiration from these games but there is little evidence to suggest these boosts are anything other than short term following Olympics.

    Time will tell.

  6. Evening Express reported that only 3,000 tickets were sold for this game?! Surely this is either a mis-print or they have just gotten this plainly wong?!

They were suggesting 3000 ontop of STs which once you include corporate and away fans probably puts us at around 11-12k.  Still fewer than hoped for but reckon a lot of folk will pay on the gate

    Anyway

    In/Oot: In

Prematcher: 1041 crew ride again then probably up to the ground to get my free strip and some other merchandise.

Match: Back in my old RDU ST seat, looks fucking empty up there again this season which is a shame.

Postmatcher: Back down to the weeg on the train via pub, carryoot shop and chipper

Prediction: Is it too much to hope for an exciting attacking game a few goals and a win?  Probably

  7.

In this summer of administrations, liquidations and general financial nonsense in football, the Olympics has really brought home what sport really is all about.

Pumping loads and loads of money into minority sports so we can feel superior?

  8. Really hope for a big crowd but looks like we'll be relying on a lot of walk ups and pay at the gate to get a decent attendance, sadly won't make the sell out.

Anyway good interview with George Adams here: http://www.afc.co.uk/articles/20120807/ross-county-preview-_2212158_2874253

History between Aberdeen and Ross County is quite quick to summarise as we have never played a competitive game against each other at first team level and never at Pittodrie:

While the Dons have been frequent visitors to Victoria Park through the years, appearing in various friendly and testimonial matches, County will be visiting Pittodrie for the first ever time in competitive action against Aberdeen on Saturday. The only occasion that Ross County played at the old stadium was back in 1993 the Scottish Qualifying Cup Final. On that occasion they came up against Rosyth Dockyard and went down 4-1. The only other competitive game found in the club archive was a BP Youth Cup clash in 1991.

  9. Accusations of fiddling the gate numbers at Ipox last night.

Kick off delayed for full twenty minutes to allow the crowd in.

Reported on the half time report I heard as being a full house, but official crowd given as 38,120.

Radio Scotland questioned Green about this after the game apparently and he just laughed about it.

Not like Der Hun to cheat and defraud other clubs out of cash is it !

    quote from the bbc

Many observers believed the attendance was greater than the official figure.

"It seems to me like the old days where there were 40,000 but only 20,000 paid and the other went god knows where," admitted the chief executive.

  10. Thought about putting this in the financial Armageddon thread

The SPL today announced a partnership with YouTube. Dons supporters can catch highlights from every Clydesdale Bank Premier League match for the next three seasons on the video sharing website via the 'splofficial' channel.

The groundbreaking deal is a first for league football in the UK. From season 2012-13 'splofficial' will be the place to catch all the goals, skills, best saves and top tackles from the top tier of Scottish football, while being a platform for supporters to share their own videos and experiences as they follow their club throughout the season.

The 'splofficial' channel will also cover pre and post match reaction from players and managers. Aberdeen have also launched their own channel where supporters will be able to catch up with Craig, Archie and the lads away from the pitch and gain unprecedented access to the club, behind-the-scenes at Pittodrie.

The 'splofficial' channel can be accessed via the following URL: http://www.youtube.com/splofficial. Match highlights will be available for supporters in the UK to view from 6pm on Sundays. Catch up with all the latest Dons banter at: http://www.youtube.com/aberdeenfc2012

Stuart MacPhee, SPL Commercial Manager, said: "Launching the 'splofficial' channel represents a new chapter in online fan engagement for our league. Making Clydesdale Bank Premier League content available on YouTube will allow fans to access all the best action, on and off the pitch, whenever they want and wherever they are, be it at home on the laptop or on their smartphone on the bus to work."

Stephen Nuttall, Senior Director, Sports for YouTube Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "Football fans worldwide naturally go to YouTube to catch up on goals and highlights. Our partnership with The Scottish Premier League will give the global YouTube audience access to all aspects of Scottish football from the best on-field action to exclusive behind-the-scenes footage."

  11. On Friday, Andrew Watt, our lucky 6,500th season ticket holder, came to Pittodrie as our guest to meet Craig Brown who presented him with a signed shirt.

With the sales of season tickets continuing to escalate as we approach our first home game of the 2012/2013 season on Saturday against Ross County, we are once again going to reward our loyal supporters.

We have been overwhelmed by the positivity from our fans and the allegiance they have shown to the club throughout a summer of uncertainty. Every single season ticket purchased benefits the Club immeasurably and we want to recognise that loyalty to the Club.

Once we hit the 7,000 mark, 5 lucky season ticket holders will be drawn, at random, winning hospitality for 2 in either the Legends or Europa Lounge at a game of their choice (subject to availability).

Red Army, you are the twelfth man! THE TIME IS NOW to show your support.

Click here for more information on our season tickets click here or call our customer services team on 01224 63 1903.

  13.

Am I right in thinking that they don't get ranking points for taking part in the Olympics?

They were talking about that yesterday.  They do but is something like the 15th top ranked event and gets 750pts instead of 2000pts for winning gold (or something like that). McEnroe was advocating having the Olympics ranked alongside the Slams in terms of ranking points.
