Problem is you get the morons rushing out to fill up the cars and their garage with petrol till the well runs dry, this then forces sensible folk to go out and fill their cars up as they know they will need fuel next week but are anxious the morons will have used it all. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. The government are morons but have successfully shifted the political debate and news cycle away from their highly unpopular budget and boosted the tax coffers at the end of the financial year.

After slagging American politics I've just switched off Newsnight where we had the story of a Government minister telling folk to go and fill jerry cans with petrol in case of a strike that hasn't been called and a Labour MP trying to do anything to avoid saying whether he thinks the tanker drivers should strike or not. Meanwhile at the top of the political tree we have David Cameron making up a story about the last time he bought a pasty and Eds Milliband and Balls going to a Greggs to buy a sausage roll to apparently demonstrate the injustice of vat on pasties and to illustrate just how real they are keeping it. Even by American standards that's an embarrassing level of political debate.
