It's a nickname given to a derby. It doesn't put them on a pedestal. Puzzling that people get upset at the term "Old Firm" but are fine with Sky claiming Scottish football starts and ends with them. That is irrelevant. Someone stating "second in Glasgow is second in Scotland" are stating that as a fact. It may have been the case last season, but it wasn't for 50% of the last 12 seasons. It may well happen this season, however it's completely overlooking that one non-old firm team is currently five points clear of Rangers. It was Sky TV doing their usual "the Old Firm are Scottish football" shtick, and it's wrong, both morally and factually. Aberdeen are joint top, Rangers are fourth. Second in Glasgow is currently fourth in Scotland. And that will remain the case until such time as it is not.

In your opinion, Rangers will finish second. That's fine, you may well be proved right at the end of the season. But Sky TV to state as an undeniable fact that "Scottish football IS the Old Firm" (which, disgustingly, you've just repeated there) is what I'm referring to. Not only is it unimaginative and disrespectful as the league's main broadcaster makes no attempt to promote the rest of the league, it's also incorrect. They're currently fourth. In England they would be talking up a strong start from someone else not dismissing them already in September. Thank god the BBC are here to champion the rest.
-
If he's currently concussed and not quite 100% then now would be a good time to put the contract in front of him.
-
Aye you all make lovely well argued points about how great Rangers are. But he is wrong, as are you. They may well be favourites for second, they may very well secure it comfortably, but they aren't second. They're fourth.

Miovski an unused sub tonight as Girona beat Sevilla 2-0. Tough for him to break into the team. Their next two games are Barcelona and PSG.
-
The boy Akil Wright seems a right good player for them, very good defensively. Was surprised to learn he's 28 and had a bit of a journeyman career. Maybe a late bloomer. Certainly one to keep an eye on though.

Sky commentary today: "Second in Glasgow means second in Scotland." Rangers are currently second in Glasgow and fourth in the Premiership.

Think you've picked me up wrong. I would have seen a draw as points dropped too, I was remarking more on the performance and the team's ongoing baby steps towards being the all-dominant force we are destined to become. I'd still have been happy with the performance even had we not won. That we still did win is a bonus. Yeh, noticed that too. I said during the week that under Thelin we seem to have developed a knack of being able to break stuffy teams down, but that maybe if we were chasing a goal with 15 minutes to go it'd be different. Now maybe being 1-0 down it would have been different, but we were still so patient, passing it around the back and running at them rather than lumping it into the box.

Exactly, I'm just a young thing full of the zest of life. First game I think was 87, and even then until 92 was watched very much through the eyes of a child. I liked Rico and Jess, but Jess especially was a very different player (was more of a 4-4-2 in those days). Shinnie-Jack could be good at times but there always seemed something off about Jack, can't quite put my finger on it. Had the same feeling with Barron, dunno what it was. So aye, Shinnie-Nilsen, legends. Especially when the trophies start arriving. And plus, let's be honest here, they're both better than Simmie and Tattie. Gothenburg? Game would have been won in 90 minutes with those two.

Even had that game finished 0-0 I would thought it was still a positive afternoon for us, when you consider we're supposed to be a team in transition. We faced a tough challenge and did well. Defensively look good, Nilsen and Shinnie may very well turn out to be my favourite ever midfield pairing, Keskinen was really good, Vinnie was also good off the bench. Devlin excellent even with conceding penalty and agree Mitov is a real coup for us. To win it in the 98th minute is a bonus.

Niall McGinn back in Scotland, signing for Greenock Morton.

Sorry to hear about your dog @tlg1903. So hard to say goodbye to them. Hope you're doing good. As for the game, it's potentially the toughest game we'll have faced so far. St Johnstone away was tough but I tend to find it's easier to go there and stamp your authority on the game than it is in Dingwall. Nine wins out of nine would be really something though, and it's definitely doable. Would start Nisbet just because I'm concerned about Sokler and Gueye together, and hard to drop the latter after his double last week.

So that's our squad, plus cameos from a few of the younger players. It's fine. On paper, better than what we had last season even without Miovski.

Looks like that's us done then. https://www.afc.co.uk/2024/08/30/deadline-day-update/ Following the conclusion of the summer transfer window we can now provide the following update to supporters. Defender Jayden Richardson has left the Club. The right-back, who arrived at Aberdeen in the summer of 2022 from Nottingham Forest but following loan periods at Stockport County and Colchester United last season has struggled to find game time since the start of this season. The 23-year-old made 24 appearances for the Dons. With eight summer arrivals, the departure of Jayden draws to a close our transfer activity for this window. “We would like to wish Jayden the best of luck with his future career and I would like to thank him for his effort and professionalism during his time here”, said Dons boss Jimmy Thelin. “In terms of deadline day, the process of adding any new recruits has ended. “It is important to maintain calm and focus and only add players who can enhance our current squad and build long term value for Aberdeen. “I am very pleased with the response from the players already at the Club, and our new players have integrated well, building strong foundations which will continue to grow over the weeks and months ahead. “Overall, we are satisfied with the business we have done over this summer. We have added some exciting options and the work on improving the squad will be on-going as we prepare for January and Summer 2025. “Our full attention now turns to the match tomorrow against Ross County and we look forward to another impressive backing from the supporters in Dingwall.”

In January maybe if he's not playing. But he is playing just now. He's not started a game yet, but he's featured in all eight games. It makes sense for him to at least train with the team, get to know how Thelin operates, actually settle in to the club, then if Thelin feels he can't give him much game time send him on loan in January.
-
Gie the boy a chance min. The most he's played in any game this season is 29 minutes. Remember the last guy you wrote off.. By this point Nilsen had played two full games, which is around 50 minutes more than Ambrose has had.
-
Seeing a lot of shouts for Ambrose to go out on loan but I'd be surprised at that. If he goes out on loan it'll be January, and only if he isn't getting game time. Right now not only is he getting some minutes, he's only just arrived. How can the guy settle in the city and at the club if he's shipped out on loan five minutes after arriving?

Thelin saying Aberdeen are working on some things before the window closes.

RPReplay_Final1724623760.mov Only watched the last 15 minutes of Atletico v Girona tonight like a proud dad, but Miovski barely got a touch, mainly due to how wasteful the two wide men for Girona were. If the video above plays, that was the one chance that fell Miovski's way. Probably should do better but he still has the same number of La Liga goals as Mbappe.

I don't think we were getting him on a short-term contract. At 32 he wasn't leaving Brann to move abroad for anything less than three years and, I imagine, a decent salary. But when you look at him today patrolling the middle of the park while everyone else plays off him, he can play that role for years. It's what Scott Brown should have been doing for Aberdeen, but instead - possibly due to the players around him and probably frustration - tried to be a box-to-box midfielder. From the little I saw of Palaversa, I actually think he's the guy that replaces Shinnie when he needs a rest/gets suspended. I think he described himself as a box-to-box midfielder when he signed.

The one criticism of Thelin at Elfsborg that I saw a lot when reading what their fans were saying when they were having that sticky spell just before he came to us, was that he's great on the counter attack but doesn't know how to break teams down when they sit in. It appears he has altered his style somewhat at Aberdeen, perhaps with different players it has given him more options. But breaking down teams hasn't been a huge problem this season. But then we'll see what it's like, when the time comes, that we're down 1-0 with 15 minutes to go away from home. Think that's probably about right when you consider the capacity these days is just over 19,000 Here's two images that show at least 3,000 empty seats in the away end and upper deck.

Aye second half I actually thought we were poor, even though we got the second goal. We were really wasteful with the ball, mainly when we tried to go long. Rubezic was over hitting everything, Gueye's performance dropped a lot in the second half. I thought we looked better when we put on Ambrose and Nisbet in those last 10 minutes, but maybe that was just because Killie were done at that point. Sokler is a puzzle. His movement is really good, but his finishing is not. At times though you see him and Gueye standing in the same spot waiting for a cross. That's maybe more Gueye's fault - when Ambrose and Nisbet were on you could see Nisbet being more aware of dropping away from Ambrose and finding space. But, if Nisbet and/or Ambrose are fit enough to start at Dingwall then it's harder to make the case for Sokler keeping his place. Despite my moans, can't complain too much about what was a comfortable 2-0 win. Nilsen, Shinnie, Molloy, Mackenzie and McGrath were really good. Gueye, first half at least, offered a really good option there but is a raw talent - when he keeps it simple he's good, when he tries the wee flicks he's not. So many options for Thelin now going forward. A month ago the worry was that we were weaker squad wise than last season, now there's no question we're stronger. Would still like another centre half in before Friday. Other than that I'm happy with the squad. Clarkson and Polvara still to come back, I hope MacDonald stays but fear he won't - he's not getting a sniff at the minute. Maybe we bring in a CB and MacDonald goes on loan until January.
-
Gueye been good, the goal a bonus. Plays as a fine link-up man. I did suggest after the Queen's Park game that Gueye and Sokler couldn't play together as they're similar. Sokler been quiet but I think that's because he would revel more in the role Gueye is playing in. With that, can see Nesbit on soon to be that number nine, and either Sokler will move back if Gueye is tiring, or it'll be a Nesbit/Sokler swap. Shinnie seems to play as a pendulum around Nilsen. Makes him impossible to pick up. Sometimes leaves Nilsen a bit exposed though, and against a better team could cause problems, especially as Gueye is sometimes a bit too careless in possession with some of his attempted flicks.

Had £1 on it

Gueye first goal 9/2... Interesting that Killie have dropped McCrorie, the goalkeeper Rangers were trying to flog us at the start of the summer. He's looked more than shaky this season.
