Madbadteacher Posted November 13, 2023 Report Posted November 13, 2023 Anyone else on here remember shopping in Robert Rae’s or the Rubber Shop? My auntie Margaret used to work in Isaac Benzies, another blast from the past, and my uncle George was butcher (possibly co-owner) at Lyon’s in George St. Quote
Elgindon Posted November 13, 2023 Report Posted November 13, 2023 Remember the names Robert Raes and the Rubber shop but was never in them(too young tv adverts),also remember the adverts for Mr Beaujangles .There was a Benzies in Elgin many moons ago,not sure if they were connected to the ABZ branch 1 Quote
Slim Posted November 13, 2023 Report Posted November 13, 2023 Used to get my Aberdeen strips (shirt, shorts and socks in a box) from Robert Raes. Seem to remember they had 2 branches, one on Marischal Street which lasted longer than the one on George Street (I think). Used to get a great selection of obscure fitba strips in Justrite for a fiver. I remember getting Sweden and Soviet Union circa 1990. Toy Bazaar was fucking ace as a kid, and I remember there being a joke shop on either John Street or St Andrew Street that did a roaring trade in devil bangers and stink bombs. 1 Quote

Used to love coming into town when I was young and going to The Rubber Shop. Towards the back of the shop and up the stairs if I mind right was where I bought my Subutteo, Scaletrix and model planes. Halcyon care free days indeed in the late 60's early 70's. Once I was a teenager it was more about going to Robert Rae's for Doc Martins, Levis/Wranglers, Harrington Jackets, Denim Jackets etc. 12 hours ago, Slim said: Used to get my Aberdeen strips (shirt, shorts and socks in a box) from Robert Raes. Heading out George St from the city centre, there was two shops next door to one another with separate entrances and another one across the road, close to Grand Central cinema, the one where they used to show the porn films or so I have been told Obviously as has already been highlighted there was also a Robert Rae shop in Marischal Street. 1 Quote

Madbadteacher Posted November 14, 2023 Author Report Posted November 14, 2023 Rae’s on George St was next to the bowling alley? Quote

If it wasn't next door MBT, it was certainly very close to it Also beside RR's was a record shop where as well as buying vinyl I also used to pick up my Memorex (Is it live or is it Memorex ) or BASF C60 or C90 blank cassettes which were predominantly used for taping the top forty when the new charts were announced on Radio One @ 5pm on Sundays. Think the shop was a branch of Chalmers & Joy Quote

Toy Bazaar was on Correction Wynd? Fantastic place, as was Alan's Of Aberdeen which was on Hadden St - two massive floors of treasure as a kid. I remember an old joke shop on one of the corners of George Street, it was just like the one in the movie Restless Natives Quote
Elgindon Posted November 14, 2023 Report Posted November 14, 2023 (edited) ^^Was it the Joke factory? Speaking of George st,loved a rummage thru the records at One up when it was there.Used to have greasy pie beans n chips at the Silver city cafe en route from the station to the fitba.'Chef' with the fag in the corner of his mouth cooking fine fare, and an old wifie waitress, who would always burst into song when we stuck on Perry Como or Frank Sinatra on the juker(intentionally for a laugh) Edited November 14, 2023 by Elgindon Quote
