tlg1903 Posted October 21, 2024 Report Posted October 21, 2024 I'm not sure we could have sewn it up in the summer after the basket case of a season we had culminating with the fucking tourist. Hardly grounds to extend for a few years when you have a talent and can do better. Our only hope I think is the stability and progress we have clearly made since can convince him we are worth staying at. Sadly though if the tims are interested he will go, he probably is a Tim as his family were over for the game Saturday which he seemed very chuffed about. I know it was a big game and they could have just been there anyway but it is an easy one to speculate on. 1 Quote
OrlandoDon Posted October 21, 2024 Report Posted October 21, 2024 I think what hurts us is that he is a natural #10 being played out of position. He’s done well at left mid and that allows clarkson, even gueye at 10. We also dont have a topi equivalent to play on the left, hence it’s McGrath. sell clarkson or gueye and commit to McGrath at 10 may make a difference, but to be fair to mcgrath, he’s 28 and has to take a big pay day if offered. would be sad to lose him but does this put Lennon miller, Lyle Cameron, or the young guy at killie on our radar as replacement?? I’m sure there’s another topi out the too. Quote

wee toon red Posted October 22, 2024 Report Posted October 22, 2024 I'm not convinced that the "big money" offers will be there for McGrath. He's spent his entire career - barring four appearances - in the League of Ireland and Scotland and although he's having a good season so far, I don't see Celtic or anyone bigger than Aberdeen being all that interested. Possibly wishful thinking but if we continue to make progress under Jimmy and can offer McGrath an upgraded contract then I don't see why he wouldn't re-sign. Quote

You could be right, but replace McGrath's name with McCowan or Hayes and the above would have been applicable to both before they went there. He might even feel he wants another shot down South, although I don't think his game is necessarily suited to the level of team he'd get. Or maybe he's just waiting for his hat trick against the Huns before announcing his three year deal. Quote
Jute Posted January 24 Report Posted January 24 McGrath has shoulder injury and out for the next few months. Quote
RicoS321 Posted January 24 Author Report Posted January 24 (edited) Out for months with a shoulder injury. Might not see him again for the Dons. Shame, would have been nice to get a small fee for him in this window Edit: beaten Edited January 24 by RicoS321 Quote
Jute Posted January 24 Report Posted January 24 Aye was going to say that injury probably blows any chance of getting a fee for him now. Quote

Could be the shoulder injury is part of the reason he hasn’t been performing rather than him downing tools like folk have been suggesting. Quote
Slim Posted January 25 Report Posted January 25 He landed awkwardly on his shoulder in the last game he played and had to come off if I remember correctly. Quote

Yep, he's clearly not downed tools anymore than anyone else in the side. He's just looked tired. It possibly hasn't caused this particular injury, but he was played to death since the start of the season and it was only a matter of time before he picked up something. Quote
Goldie03 Posted January 25 Report Posted January 25 Maybe he signs a wee extension when he is out injured and we get to keep him till next January Quote
BigAl Posted yesterday at 10:27 Report Posted yesterday at 10:27 Bye bye cunto Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out Four year deal Quote
RicoS321 Posted yesterday at 11:06 Author Report Posted yesterday at 11:06 It's a very good signing for them. I'm quite surprised that he's not just running his deal down to see if he gets more offers in the summer. His injury came at the wrong time for us, as we could have shipped him out in January for a small fee. It's worked well for Hibs in that they don't have to bother with the fee. A step sideways and perhaps a little bit downward, but I suspect the money on offer would have been similar to here, so likely a family decision. He's been a good signing for us. Hope he breaks his leg. Quote
BigAl Posted yesterday at 11:27 Report Posted yesterday at 11:27 Surprised that if he had interest in Europe or the States that he hasn't gone there, however he has won a watch financially with a four year deal which will gross him over a million as a basic salary. Kudos to AFC for not being stupid enough to give him the deal until summer of 2029. We've lost better than him before and survived. Quote
wee toon red Posted yesterday at 11:56 Report Posted yesterday at 11:56 A four year deal for an influential 28yo wouldn't have been ridiculous - but I don't consider him influential and clearly the club doesn't either so it's the right move for all parties. A good player and signing but one who should be replaceable. Quote

Now it's up to the club to make that replacement happen and I'm confident that they will. 1 Quote
tlg1903 Posted yesterday at 12:41 Report Posted yesterday at 12:41 Lest we forget he's been pretty awful ever since he bottled his pen against der hun. A great player on his day and I'm sure he will score one or two against us but defo replaceable. 1 Quote

A good player and signing but one who should be replaceable. You stole my post. He’s had good games but not consistent enough. He’s a true 10 but we stuck him left mid and that’s not his position moving forward. We have gueye Clarkson polvara and McGrath all pretty much competing for a similar position and none are an obvious starter. I also question his mental toughness, the penalty miss seemed to damage him. Losing McGrath is no biggie and the 10 is the position I was hoping we upgrade in the summer anyway. seems a decent lad, good luck to him. Quote
Panda Posted yesterday at 14:01 Report Posted yesterday at 14:01 He's a very good player, and he'll be a very good player for Hibs, but he struggled in Thelin's system. Thelin wanted him playing off the left and he never really shined in that role. Hopefully Okkels becomes the player we all hope he will. The big take away from this is Hibs taking a player from a direct rival and offering him a four-year deal, months after being able to offer Hoilett what we couldn't. Whether it proves to be financially prudent or not remains to be seen, but they're spending the Black Knights money. It's always been Hearts we've been worried about for third place, but Hibs have been quietly sneaking up on us. Quote

A great player on his day and I'm sure he will score one or two against us but defo replaceable. The whole team chucked it after that. He was running on fumes in that game, and the ones after. He seemed to get more game the more tired he got, playing 80+ minutes every game bar one (and mostly the full 90) from the draw with Tims, where he was brilliant, to the point he got injured. Despite the fact that that was the point he needed the rest most. He was really good up until that point, where he was being taken off in 60-80 minutes most weeks, having done the hard work. The creative parts of your game are the first to go when you tire, which doesn't leave guys like McGrath or Clarkson much to work with. I think we'll struggle to replace him (guys like Okkels are nowhere near the level), but I wouldn't have given him a four year deal either. Quote
Elgindon Posted yesterday at 14:43 Report Posted yesterday at 14:43 (edited) Seems he was keen to stay at Pittodrie, but we werent keen to give him a 4 year deal, from AFC tweet below, "Jamie McGrath will leave Aberdeen at the end of the season following the expiry of his contract. We were informed by fellow Premiership side Hibernian that he has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Edinburgh club. Both Jamie, who will miss the rest of the season through injury, and his representative made it clear he was happy at Pittodrie, and was keen to stay, but we were not prepared to offer him a four-year extension. Everyone at Aberdeen FC respects Jamie’s decision to look elsewhere, thanks him for his time at the club and wishes him all the best for his future career.Jamie McGrath will leave Aberdeen at the end of the season following the expiry of his contract.
