Guest swaddon Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/sport-news/scottish-football/spl/aberdeen-fc/2008/06/01/coventry-in-for-maguire-78057-20591091/ COVENTRY CITY are poised to swoop for Aberdeen's teenage hitkid Chris Maguire. Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman is impressed by the 19-year-old who netted four goals in his breakthrough season at Dons. Maguire only has a year left on his contract and if he moved now the Pittodrie side would be looking for around £300,000. Other Championship clubs are keen on Maguire but if he moves then the Ricoh Arena would be his most likely destination. Maguire would be available on a Bosman next season although any clubs interested would have to pay compensation under the FIFA ruling after he was reared by the Pittodrie club. Quote
Goldie03 Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Coventry obviously didn't watch him play at ER in February then Quote
Reekie_Red Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 They probably watched Soccer AM, and made a judgment on that performance alone. "What a character he must be in the dressing room", thought the Coventry City management team. "Aye", replied JC via facsimile. Quote
Edinburghdon Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 If we are going to sell Maguire i reckon we should hold out for as much as we can, £300,000 is relative peanuts to coventry and on paper Magiure is a young talented international playing regularly for an SPL club (although obviously we know better) If we try and get more for him the more we can spend on a better standard of replacement! minijc Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Right lets bombard their forums with tales of how Maguire will be the worlds next best thing in the hope they offer more and take him off our hands. Quote
El Padre™ Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 I say sell him and bring in Niculae. See ya Chris. Quote
Reekie_Red Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Plus, surely the fact that he is still under the umbrella of the FIFA ruling, then even Bosman compensation next summer would see us probably get more than £300,000 for Maguire. IIRC, we got more than that from Newcastle for Glass under the same rule. Quote

El Padre™ Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 This whole under 21 players in the squad on match day thing. Would we have some better to sit on the bench? Andy Bagshaw? Quote
Reekie_Red Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Glass was a far far better player than Maguire though. Purely an opinion. In terms of statistics that FIFA can look at on paper, Maguire is probably only marginally below Glass' statistics in terms of the number of high-profile matches he's been involved in for both club and country at this particular stage of his career. minijc Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 This whole under 21 players in the squad on match day thing. Would we have some better to sit on the bench? Yeah Mcrobbie seems to be showing alot of potential and he is only just turned 17 i think, the guy Sammy Stewart and Pawlett, all being hyped up either by the club or people who have watched them. phil-stellaartois-mcguire Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 to be honest, he may well be a 'prospect' so he should be signed up on a contract extension, that way we can get more money either way, selling or releasing and getting compensation. Quote
glasgowdon Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Let's go for £500k. ICT let Rankin go for £110k so £500k means we can get Niculae and have change left over. Quote
Sweetchuck Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 I'd get rid, to be honest. £300k would see us net Niculae no probs, especially if this all swings into action before Euro 2008 kicks off. Calderwood is currently doing his utmost to turn Maguire into another Darren Mackie, anyway: all pace and persistence, no skill or technique whatsoever. All of the early promise shown by Maguire has been replaced by a striker who constantly harries defenders when they are in possession, and an apparent aversion to creativity when in possession himself. Not saying that it's his fault; just that under Calderwood, he won't turn out to be the kind of player that we're hoping for. Quote
Mackie's ace! Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Niculae won't be going anywhere until Euro 2008 is over. Quote
El Padre™ Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Theyre going to have to offload him soon though, I don't imagine they can continue paying his wages. Quote
mizer Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 ABERDEEN have offered Chris Maguire a new deal to fend off interest in the talented teen. Coventry City have been linked with a £300,000 swoop for the 19-year-old Dons striker. But Willie Miller today said the Scotland youth cap, who is in the final year of his contract, is not for sale at any price. “We’ve offered Chris an extension to his current deal as he’s out of contract next summer,†said Pittodrie director of football Miller. “I read about Coventry’s interest but there has been no official approach.†Maguire scored four goals for the Dons last term as he started to make his mark in manager Jimmy Calderwood’s plans. The Glaswegian made 15 starts for the Reds last season and is now aiming to become a permanent fixture in the side. Miller is hopeful Maguire will sign on again at Pittodrie and claims Coventry would have to offer a lot more than the reported fee if they were to even consider parting with the rising star. He added: “I would like to think Chris will accept the contract offer and we’ll hear back from him when he returns for pre-season training in a few weeks. “There’s no way we want to sell him and if Coventry are seriously interested then they would need to add a few zeros on to the figure that’s been quoted. “Not that we are trying to tout him because we’re not in the game of rearing good young players then selling them for peanuts. “We want to develop our own good young players and we’ll have more coming through our system in the future.†Aberdeen boss Calderwood will have Maguire, Darren Mackie, Lee Miller and Jamie Smith all competing for an attacking berth in the new campaign. The Dons gaffer is also closing in on Southend’s Richie Foran to join fellow new recruits Gary McDonald, Bertrand Bossu and Sammy Stewart at Pittodrie. The former Motherwell man would cost £50,000 to lure north and provide further competition for a place in the strikeforce. But the Irishman will first have to undergo a stringent medical as he’s had recent knee surgery. Meanwhile, Alan Maybury is reported to have opened talks with English Championship side Plymouth Argyle. Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock is looking for a right back after losing Paul Connolly to Derby County. Maybury, a Republic of Ireland international, joined Aberdeen on-loan in January but could now team up with Chris Clark at Home Park. The former Hearts man made 19 appearances but has since become a free agent after he was released by Leicester City. The 29-year-old has been offered a new deal by Calderwood but Sturrock is favourite to land his man. Miller thinks bebo is worth £30 million Quote
Edinburghdon Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 Miller thinks bebo is worth £30 million :lolabove: Maybe selling bebo for £30 million is the master plan to build our new stadium, youth academy etc. ...... Quote
Stewart Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 This must be the first time in AFC history that we have offered a player a contract extension more than 6 months before their current deal runs out! Quote
