Coventry City old boy Noel Whelan on Celebrity Masterchef

Jun 27 2008

FORMER Coventry City soccer star Noel Whelan is trading in his football boots for a frying pan to take part in a new series of TV favourite Celebrity MasterChef.

He will be putting his culinary talents to the test and battling against celebrities like former Atomic Kitten Liz McLarnon, Watchdog presenter Julia Bradbury, Brookside's Steven Pinder, Birds Of A Feather actress Linda Robson and newsreader Michael Buerk for a chance to win the coveted title of Celebrity MasterChef.

A total of 24 celebrities will be taking part in the new BBC 1 series, which starts on Wednesday (JULY 2), and they will have to prepare a dinner from scratch in under an hour to tempt the tastebuds of food experts and judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace.

The two chefs are not known for their forgiving temperaments and tucked into 1,700 dishes last year.

But sport people have done well on the show in the past. Rugby star Matt Dawson is among the past winners of the title.

Noel, aged 33, played for the Sky Blues in the 1990s. The striker was bought by the club's manager at the time, Ron Atkinson, for £2 million in 1995 and Noel moved to Middlesboro in 2000 for £2.2million.

He's now hoping to impress the Celebrity MasterChef judges with his speciality dish ... broccoli and Stilton soup.

They must have really run out of ideas for celebrities when they gave him a phone.
