BigAl Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 I set off on my first European adventure with AFC. Early morning train to Liverpool, non stop and to be greeted by riot police on horseback upon arriving in Liverpool. Escorted on foot to the ground and not allowed in to pubs or shops for drink or food. Kept in the gorund for ages after full time and again escorted back to the station Arrived back in Aberdeen around 5am the next morning very tired and hungry. Not the best of starts to my European adventures, but lets not forget this was part of the learning curve that took more or less the same team all the way to Gothenborg in '83. Anyone else on here, make the trip all those years ago Quote
Mentorred Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 I was there, me my mum and dad drove down. I was only 6 and can't really remember much about it. Quote
BigAl Posted November 5, 2008 Author Report Posted November 5, 2008 Mentor, I mind getting police escrot through a housing estate that was rough as fuck on way to the ground. Kids of six or seven years of age gobbing on us in full view of police who stood back and did fuck all about it. As it was Bonfire night, kids running out of derelict houses/flats with floorboards for the bonfire. Post match they closed off a dual carriageway to take us back to the station. When I asked the police why, rather than going back the way we came, was told that despite the 4-0 loss some of us wouldn't have come out alive Quote
BigAl Posted November 5, 2008 Author Report Posted November 5, 2008 I was 2 weeks old, so no. Feeble excuse Part timer Quote

Anyone else on here, make the trip all those years ago I wasn't at the away leg, but it was 28 years (and 2 weeks) ago that I set off on my first European adventure with AFC I live in Fife and it was a total surprise when my Mum picked me up at lunchtime from school to take me to the first leg at Pittodrie. It was pouring with rain and we were in the first row so got soaked but I didn't care. Great memories despite the score The away leg sounds scary Quote
frewdon Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 This was my second game, having been to Vienna in the previous round. Two great bus trips! The polis in Liverpool were far more heavy handed than their Austrian counterparts despite there being a little skirmish inside and outside the Prater Stadium. Quote
caledonia Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 Liverpool was one of only 2 trips i made to england to see the dons round about that time the other was ipswich Cant remember anything much of the liverpool game as i was pretty drunk but do remember being treated like cattle and hearded to/from the ground.. The ipswich game i remember slightly going by bus from aberdeen (dont know who but it left around 10pm-midnight) and stayed in felixtowe some miles from ipswich maybe someone here will know Quote
Tyrant Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 I was down at the PSV/Liverpool game at Anfield recently and the PSV fans were singing Everton songs and getting right in the faces of the Liverpool fans and they weren't with a police escort and no one batted an eyelid at them. Things have obviously changed. Quote
dave_min Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Today marks the 349th day anniversary since I set off on my first European adventure with AFC. Flew from Aberdeen to Luton Airport. BigAl, you're old, when you set off I was -7 years old! Quote
