KGB Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 I thought the boy looked like quite a useful player. Would have quite like to have seen him stay but when youve got Ricky to play on either side at the back who needs him Quote
Tyrant Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Aye but we probably let him go rather than try and punt Foster because Hodgkiss would find it easier to find a new club a la David Preece/Ryan Esson situation a few seasons back. Quote
Kowalski Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Dons decision day for Hodgkiss Calderwood believes Alloa’s artificial surface could suit the return of Mulgrew in cup By Michael Gannon Published: 08/01/2009 Jared Hodgkiss will find out next week if he has played his last game for Aberdeen. The West Brom defender’s loan at Pittodrie ends on Tuesday and he has been ruled out of Saturday’s Scottish Cup trip to Alloa. The 19-year-old has recovered from the flu virus which struck many of the Dons squad last week but picked up an injury in training on Monday and will sit out the cup tie. Dons manager Jimmy Calderwood is hopeful he can negotiate an extension to the initial six-month deal, despite using the England youth international sparingly. Due to injury, illness and team selection, Hodgkiss has not started for Aberdeen since the 2-2 draw at Hibs in November – but Calderwood remains keen to retain his services until the end of the season, with West Brom happy for him to continue his development in the north-east. The Dons manager said: “Jared has had a couple of injuries and he was unwell last week, so he has been a bit frustrated recently. “His deal is up next week but I will talk to West Brom manager Tony Mowbray on Monday. We would like him to stay but we will see what happens.†Hodgkiss is one of several Dons players who have already been ruled out of Saturday’s match. Long-term absentees Jamie Smith, Tommy Wright, Stuart Duff and Bertrand Bossu will not be risked, while Derek Young and Andrew Considine are new injury victims. Despite some concerns about the Recreation Park artificial surface, Calderwood has no fears in bringing defender Charlie Mulgrew back into his side. The former Celtic full back missed the 2-0 defeat at Hamilton after limping off in the first minute of the 1-0 victory against Hearts the previous week. Calderwood believes Alloa’s playing surface could actually be suited to Mulgrew rather than a risk to the player. He said: “The type of injury Charlie picked up was not one which would be affected by a hard surface, so there are no worries. “The plastic pitch might be made for him. Charlie likes to get the ball down and pass it and this kind of surface suits those kind of players.†Calderwood insisted his players will need to pass the ball better than they did at Hamilton in the 2-0 SPL defeat on Saturday, although he confessed he may have been overly critical of them in the wake of the defeat at New Douglas Park. He said: “On a pitch like Alloa’s a lot will depend on how we use the ball and there will have to be a massive improvement from last week. “We gave the ball away too cheaply but there were some factors conspiring against us. “Between the flu virus and the pitch, maybe we should not have played, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. “It is a difficult decision when there are 2,500 supporters who have paid good money to travel to the game. “Either way it is in the past now and the focus is on making the next round of the Scottish Cup. We have the Kilmarnock match on Tuesday but no one is even thinking about that one yet.†Quote
BobbyBiscuit Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 what's the point in him staying when he's not getting a game? It hinders the player, West Brom and our own players, as he's taking up a first team squad place that could be used for one of our own. Quote
Guest ally s Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Can't say I'm all too fussed on Hodgkiss staying, he hasn't really impressed me all that much in his time here. Quote

Bring him up, don't play him and tag him with "failed in the SPL" therefore enabling us buy him for a nominal fee and sell him for millions. Or maybe we've just got a scattergun signing policy. Quote
