CRAIG Brewster is a friend and trusted former colleague – but Aberdeen assistant manager Jimmy Nicholl insists there will be no room for sentiment when the Dons travel to play Inverness this weekend.

Nicholl worked with Caley Thistle manager Brewster at Dunfermline and Pittodrie.

He sympathises with Brewster’s plight as the pressure intensifies on the back of a poor run of results for the Highland side.

But Nicholl has instructed Aberdeen to make the most of the failings which have caused so much frustration for Brewster.

He said: “When we were struggling at home early in the season we found teams were coming to Pittodrie and looking to get at us because we hadn’t won in Aberdeen.

“We hope to do the same thing to Inverness and knock the stuffing out them early.

“If there are some nerves for the team playing at home you have to take advantage of that. We have to take the initiative and make sure we get at them.â€

Inverness had the upperhand in the first half of the season while the Dons toiled at the wrong end of the SPL.

Now the tables have turned, with the Dons within six points of third place and Caley Thistle just three points clear of the bottom. Nicholl added: “It really is a testing time for Craig Brewster. If you are not winning games but can take positives from your performances there is something to work on, but on Saturday I thought Craig sounded so disappointed with them.

“We all know what it is like when Inverness play Aber-deen. Are we going to be the team to give them a confidence boost? We have to make sure that is not the case. We have got a run going ourselves and have to win on Saturday. With Dundee United playing Hearts, something has to give with the teams above us.

“There is an edge to games against Inverness and rightly so, despite the distance between the clubs.

“They have been cracking games and our supporters love to win them – it doesn’t matter how we do it, as long as we take three points.

“Against other teams we can win 1-0 and the supporters might go away a bit disappointed.

“If we do the same against Inverness they are happy as Larry.â€

The Dons hope to have Sone Aluko available again and Jamie Smith could also be in contention after returning to full training on Monday.
