Guest leith_red Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 Listening to the Scottish Govts version of Chemical Ali proclaiming how wonderful the response to todays snow was got me thinking a bit. Clearly the councils and Government haven't learnt any significant lessons from the chaos last winter but is part of the problem not the shocking transport infrastructure in Scotland. Outside the narrow Central Belt the train network is poor to non existant, the network for cargo worse. Resulting in increased car and worst of all lorry traffic on the roads. Lorries especially add hugely to the congestion and delays. On top of that we have the main motorway in the country that is two lane for most if it's length, narrows into a bottle neck at the Clyde and is actually a dual carriage-way A-road at one of it's busiest stretches. Roads north from Glasgow have been terrible for years and even when the M80 Moodiesburn by pass is finished much of it will also be two lane. The whole place is a fucking farce. 1000s of folk stuck on the country's main arterial route for 10hours!!! But they all did a good job according to Snow Ali A big part of the problem is, that regardless of how many snowploughs and gritters there is, if folk get stuck and abandon thier cars in a way that blocks the road, then they can't get through to clear the roads - which seems to have been part of the problem yesterday. I don't know for sure yet what the problems were, but I'm sure my folks will let me know (they left Glasgow at 0940 yesterday and got home to Kintore at 0940 this morning!?). The other issue yesterday seems to have been the weather - according to the weather forecasts, it was only supposed to last for a couple of hours - stopping around 0900 - but continued to fall into the afternoon and a lot heavier than had been predicted. Too many folk don't know how to drive properly, never mind know how to drive properly in winter conditions; too many people think only of themselves, and show now consideration to any other road users. Tyrant Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 True. The other problem is to do with individual accountability. All yer looney lefty socialistas will tell ye that if things go wrong in society - the 'state' can fix it and the state is there to help. This isn't in fact the whole story - people need to take individual responsibility. Bloody blame culture - the only people you can blame is yourself... ...and DHL - cunts. How come UPS, Match Couriers and the Royal Mail can all get me deliveries but DHL say the weather is a problem since last freakin Wednesday. I go over to DHL at Altens to find oot. They tell me they aren't delivering today... WTF?!?!? On the drive over I saw UPS, TNT, Royal Mail and Pegasus couriers all out today. DHL = dickheads. They still say another 2 days to get me my parcel. Wankers. Must be something really nice if it's got your knickers in a twist like that! By the way I think Snow Chains are illegal in the UK. I Quote
mizer Posted December 7, 2010 Author Report Posted December 7, 2010 Just about shat myself, was oot putting stuff into the store and the tree across the road snapped with the weight of snow Quote

Kowalski Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 Faithless cancelled their concert tonight in Glasgow due to police advice. However, Frankie Boyle's gig went ahead at the SECC and approx. 4,500 turned up, 4,500 didn't make it. http://www.secc.co.uk/attend/how-to-get-here/frankie-boyle-information.aspx It is the SECC's understanding that the promoter and artist management will not be making refunds given that the show went ahead as planned. He really is turning into a bit of a cunt. Quote

Madbadteacher Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 So, fit's my chances of being able to drive back "home" to up by Fort William from London tomorrow after my (almost certainly) fruitless appointment at the US embassy? How bad is the snow on the M6/M74/A82 etc? Quote

Tyrant Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Was snowing when I left Aberdeen yesterday. Not a flake to be seen in Edinburgh or Fife (although a lot from last week hadn't yet melted) and it was snowing when I got back to Aberdeen. Toon was grid lock. When will people realise that revving the car to fuck when wheel spinning only makes things worse? Morons. Had to walk to my Hilton home from the train station yesterday. Had icicles attached to me face by the time I got hame. It was superb. Quote
Madbadteacher Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Well I got back to Salen about 7pm, having left central London about 930am today....and nae sna till I got off the ferry at Ardgour! Fit's all the fuss about? Quote

tom_widdows Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Look at a fugging map of Scotland so you made it to the isle of mull from englandshire whilst cunningly avoiding that notorious detour which forces you from the M74 onto the A90 to Aberdeen, then along the A96 to Inverness before drop kicking you down the A82. Wish id thought to avoid that. Took me 12hrs to get from Lesmahagow to Partick on monday Quote
