Ajja Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Are there any strikers in the SPL scoring regularly? Exactly. We have to get past this idea that we will get a penalty box striker who bangs in 20+ goals in a season. Players are required to do much more than stand around in the 6 yard box to pop the ball in the net, the modern game demands more flexibility from limited squads. The predators of old are not going to be part of our game, get over it. Look at this seasons stats in the 30 goals thread. Players like ZD, MacDonald, Mulgrew getting 4-5 goals each. Its an all round performance. Quote

The predators of old are not going to be part of our game, get over it. Look at this seasons stats in the 30 goals thread. Players like ZD, MacDonald, Mulgrew getting 4-5 goals each. Its an all round performance. Just look at Man United, Rooney/Berbatov/Tevez aren't necessarily prolific goalscorers, but between them they'll score around 50 goals this year, with another 20+ goals in assists. Throw Ronaldo into the mix with 20+ goals, then the likes of Vidic/Nani/Giggs/Fletcher/Scholes/Carrick/Wellbeck who'll score between 3-8 goals each, and you see why they're competing to win every trophy. Obviously that's the other end of the spectrum, but if it's the football model for a club like Man United, it should be the model we use too, which I think JC has tried to do with the current squad. Miller/Mackie/Maguire would hopefully get 30 goals and then 10+ assists, McDonald near double figures, and the likes of Mulgrew/Diamond/Aluko/Smith chipping in with a handful of goals as well, although we should expect a better return from Aluko. Injuries have hampered us this year though unfortunately, which has had an effect on the creative side of our game (see recent games for examples). Quote
mizer Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Darren Mackie! just a pity three have been disallowed and he's nae the penalty taker We shouldn't be comparing ourselves to most of the SPL though. We should be scoring alot more goals than Hamilton, Falkirk, Inverness etc. I'm not saying we have the devine right to, and I know we suffer because teams come to Pittodrie and close up shop, but it is frustrating that some fans are so willing to get right on the back of Mackie and Maguire for not scoring goals - yet highly paid Lee Miller gets no attention. He needs a boot up the arse. Lee Miller didn't even take ONE SHOT during the Killie match. For me that's not acceptable. Mackie had a goal incorrectly chopped off. Yet the knives are out for the Dazzler again. I'm getting pissed off more and more with many in our 'support'. So willing to have a go at some but not the heroes. And they have the cheek to talk about JC having his favourites (a claim I think is more JMG bullshit nonsense). Quote

Miller may well need a boot up the arse, and although it's not right, Mackie and Maguire get that stick because of years of ineptitude, not because they've gone 7 matches without scoring. Lee Miller didn't even take ONE SHOT during the Killie match. For me that's not acceptable. Mackie had a goal incorrectly chopped off. Yet the knives are out for the Dazzler again. Miller should certainly be engineering himself into positions to threaten the target, but he also has to be set up by his team mates. It's not as black and white as "he didn't have a shot at goal, ergo drop him". It is concerning though, and especially concerning as I seem to remember a similar stat about him over a period of matches a year or two ago when he was on a poor run. Quote
dodiemurdo Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Lee Miller would appear to be one of the few undropables in the team. He was mince at the start of the season, then scored afew in a row, now back to mince. I don't see why Tommy Wright can't come onto the pitch for the last 20, 30 minutes if Miller ain't doing it. What Ive seen of Wright, he doesn't look all that great, but he needs to get a chance, we did pay money for him (albiet not a lot) He is clearly the back up man for Miller. OAP Brewster used to keep Miller out the team. And he did a good job at it. Quote
TENEMENTFUNSTER Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Miller is undroppable because he is good. Quote
BigAl Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 "Be careful what you wish for..." is "big Lee" with "all the best gear" injured now? According to JC, Miller has a hamstring problem, and out for a couple of weeks Quote
TENEMENTFUNSTER Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Ok Tommy, now is the time to do your thang! Quote
Kowalski Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Blow for Reds as Lee is ruled out Striker sidelined for three weeks Published: 05/03/2009 ABERDEEN FC striker Lee Miller has been ruled out of Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash with Dunfermline. Aberdeen fear it could be into next month before Miller is back in action. That would also rule the striker – who suffered a hamstring injury during Tuesday’s 0-0 SPL draw with St Mirren – out of Scotland’s crucial World Cup clash with Holland on March 28. Quote
manc_don Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Thats not good news. I thought they said yesterday he'd only be out for two weeks? Will be a big miss but at least it gives Wright or Maguire to show what they can do. Moreso Wright I feel. Quote
manc_don Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 Folk on MAD are convinced he's off in the summer. Apparently there was an article in the paper where he said should an acceptable offer come in, he'd leave? Anyone see this??? Quote

He's gone off the boil since Christmas or thereabouts, but he's still our best forward by a distance. I would really worry about the calibre of replacement more than anything. Quote

I definitely don't think we'd find anyone of his calibre, so I just hope that this is all a load of tosh. He's not scored enough goals (I know none of our strikers have) but I think given time, himself and Maguire may blossom, though obviously I mean into next season. Quote
