McGhee blasts Aberdeen FC fans for slating Jimmy

Criticism is nonsense, says Well boss

By Ross McTavish ???

MOTHERWELL boss Mark McGhee today branded the storm surrounding Jimmy Calderwood as “nonsenseâ€.

The Aberdeen FC legend cannot believe sections of the Red Army are calling for Calderwood to be sacked, given the manager’s track record at Pittodrie.

Calderwood is still feeling the heat following his side’s disastrous Homecoming Scottish Cup defeat to First Division Dunfermline.

McGhee himself came under pressure earlier this season when some Motherwell fans voiced their displeasure at the club’s slump to the depths of the SPL.

That was despite McGhee taking his team into the UEFA Cup, where they lost to Nancy and being forced to cope with a major injury crisis.

The former Celtic striker is ready to go head-to-head with Calderwood in Saturday’s top flight clash between the clubs.

But putting rivalries to one side, McGhee believes both he and Calderwood have been treated unfairly by some of their respective teams’ supporters.

He said: “I am surprised at the reaction of the Aberdeen fans because it was only last season they got to the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup.’’

Inevitable that with us facing Motherwell this weekend that McGhee will be questioned on the subject. He is never going to say anything else but we should be wary of assuming he has voluntarily come out with his statement, its more likely just a repsonse to prevocative pre-match interviews.

Stuuf like this just makes me think of the graham spiers article where he says

Calderwood’s reign at Aberdeen, now into its fifth season, has been intermittently infuriating, yet no sooner do the north-east fans chime up with their complaints than they are told to pipe down and behave by the blusterers in print or on microphone. Outwith Scotland’s north east, there remains a strange capacity to patronise the Aberdeen fans.
