New stadium thread

Recommended Posts

Surely any building, location, has to factor in where the majority of the fans will come from. The last study the club did on this showed that the vast majority of fans came from the North of the city. I always remember this because it was part of their great plan to move to Kingswells.

Councillors weigh up Dons’ stadium site

By Calum Ross

Published: 13/01/2011

Councillors have inspected the site earmarked for Aberdeen Football Club’s £38million new stadium.

They visited the 40 acres of land on the city’s southern outskirts yesterday, as plans for Scottish football’s newest landmark reach a key stage.

A special hearing will be held in Aberdeen tomorrow to discuss community concerns about the Dons’ vision for the 21,000-seat arena at Loirston.

Councillors will listen to opponents of the project, who have lodged 150 objections against the scheme, before making a ruling later this year. The application will be the first at Aberdeen City Council to be considered by all councillors, not just planning committee members, under new rules for major projects.

The Scottish Premier League side earmarked the council-owned site at Nigg as its preferred location for a new home to replace Pittodrie Stadium after a feasibility study found it was the most suitable available area in Aberdeen.

The development would include a 1,000-capacity supporters’ bar, as well as a 1,400-space car park. Among its innovative features would be a memorial garden using the existing Merkland Road gates from the current Pittodrie ground as a centre-piece.

The stadium would also have a bowled roof to catch the sound of fans and boost the atmosphere. To add to the effect, the extensive use of glass would flood the seating deck with natural light – and the whole facility would be lit by a red glow at night, similar to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Police have raised concerns about the safety of fans travelling to and from the venue, particularly pedestrians walking near the busy A956 Wellington Road. The force also advised the council that traffic management would be crucial at the site.

A police report to councillors said: “Any lapse in the smooth flow of traffic could cause large traffic accumulations on the A956 and result in home and away fans coming into closer contact with one another, with the potential for resulting disorder.”

The club is expected to give a presentation tonight at a public meeting arranged by community councils at Nigg, Torry, Kincorth, Leggart, Cove and Altens.

The event is being held at the Thistle Altens Hotel and starts at 7pm.

Planners have recommended approval for Aberdeen Football Club's new stadium on the outskirts of the city.

The Dons hope to build the stadium, capable of holding about 21,000 fans, at a cost of up to £40m, at Loirston Loch in the south of Aberdeen.

However, there have been more than 100 letters of objection.

The council meets on Wednesday 23 February, with potential economic benefits among the reasons for the recommendation for approval.

AFC is seeking permission for the "iconic" stadium which would include a gym, a club shop, museum and cafe.

The plan is for the whole facility to be lit at night by a red glow.

The application follows a public consultation.

Scottish ministers will have the final say.

The Dons plans to move to their new stadium at Loirston Loch took a step closer today when Aberdeen City Councillors voted 23-17 in favour of approving the plans submitted by the Club and which the city planners had recommended be rubber stamped.

In view of the magnitude of the proposed development the plans will now be referred to the Scottish Government with the proposed time scale of a move in time for the 2013/14 season still on track.

Pittodrie Chief Executive Duncan Fraser commented. "Naturally we are delighted the elected members within Aberdeen City Council have taken on board the recommendations of their colleagues in the planning department. However, I would stress, while this is an important step in terms of AFC's move towards a new home, there remains a tremendous amount of work to be done before our vision becomes a reality.

"That said, I would like to thank our staff and consultants who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes over a period of many months in order to ensure each and every aspect of our application was as professionally delivered as it possibly could be."

Anyone know how long the Scottish Government will take to look at the plans?

Anyone know how long the Scottish Government will take to look at the plans?

This is what I reported back from the AGM:

New stadium tenders are out; will go in front of council in February then expected to be called in by the Scottish Government;  Hopefully final decision in April (sounds a bit hopeful for the Scottish Government!); Contract to be awarded 1Q 2012; Construction to start 2Q 2012; Finished by start of 2013-2014 season

And Chief Executive Officer Duncan Fraser has announced that the club will be working over the coming months to bring forward funding proposals for the delivery of the stadium and the proposed training and community facilities at Calder Park, and to seek planning approval for the sale of the existing Pittodrie Stadium site.

Fraser told the club's official website RedWeb: "The decision of the Scottish Government to allow the stadium development to proceed is a critical step forward and follows on from the decision of the Council to support the proposal following the most comprehensive consultation and public scrutiny.

"With the continuing support of our major shareholders and the bank we can now move forward in the coming months to bring together a funding package. We will also be working hard to finalise the complex legal agreements tied down with regards to the development.

"A substantial element will come from the proposed sale of the existing Pittodrie site and we hope to have planning approval for this within the next couple of months. We are also working with Cove Rangers to bring forward the plans for their new stadium as well as first class football training and community facilities at Calder Park.

"The huge funding challenge will result in a big call on our major shareholders and others. We also hope to secure a significant contribution from the naming rights, enabling funding and a manageable mortgage.

"The challenge is massive and we will explore all options to ensure this major project, which will benefit the whole of the region, is successfully delivered."
