Superstar Tradesman Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 This 'back door' you talk of will be league position, and if we get in europe through league position, it'll be on merit. Isn't the sign of a good team one that is successful even when they are not at their best?? There's no denying that we'll be in a certain place in the league through merit. I'm just saying that no matter who finishes outwith the top two in our league are generally shown up in Europe. Second place didn't even look too good this year The sign of a good team is one that is successful even when they are not at their best but that doesn't go for over a whole season. That in my book would be classed as general performance. In sticky patches when you're still grinding out results then yes. Lets face it, if you can't beat United or Hearts over a season then you're not that good are you? Quote
TENEMENTFUNSTER Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 No. Last time we fully deserved to be 3rd having been out in front for most of the pack, not dropping points to the Huns the whole season and notching up last minute wins and draws. This year we've been up and down, struggled to win games, drawn far too often and not looked like contenders. If we slip into Europe via the backdoor then I think we'll get shown up because 4th or 5th place in our league simply just isn't good enough to compete. Well 5th certainly isn't. Quote
TENEMENTFUNSTER Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Lets face it, if you can't beat United or Hearts over a season then you're not that good are you? Does that mean we're not that bad then? Quote
tlg1903 Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 If we finish in a european place its on merit. Thats the way leagues work. It will not change the fact that we have been pretty stinking this season and to still be in with a shout for the euro places, can even be argued quite well placed given the fxtures, shows that its not only aberdeen that have been poor Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Where did this extra Euro place come from? Did we nab it from another country that's been underperforming or have they expanded the league to take in more teams? Quote

Kowalski Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 What extra place? The extra place for the fair play league probably. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/scot_prem/8039270.stm Quote

Since when did we have 5? We finished 4th last season but never had any European football. This year if we finish 4th we do. That says there's an extra space to me. Quote

"extra" It was there all along, it was known as the inter-toto spot, but nobody ever bothered to enter, that's why the 4th place team has to go into the 2nd qualifying round at the end of july (unless Rangers win the scottish cup, then the 4th place team goes into the 3rd qualifying round) Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Aye ok. Never take an interest in the Intertoto so I never realised they'd done away with it. Quote
dave_min Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 Aye ok. Never take an interest in the Intertoto so I never realised they'd done away with it. I don't think anybody did. I cuoldn't name any team that's ever won it? Quote
glasgowdon Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 I think three teams qualified from it. Wasn't exactly a cup competition as such. Correct. Quote
Harcus Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 I'm fairly sure Newcastle 'won' it on one occasion. Quote
dave_min Posted May 12, 2009 Report Posted May 12, 2009 I'm fairly sure Newcastle 'won' it on one occasion. I think i'm correct in saying that Seville qualified for the UEFA Cup through it and then won it? Or something along those lines, I can't really be bothered looking it up tbh Quote

Or something along those lines, I can't really be bothered looking it up tbh Sevilla never qualified through the InterToto - and no team ever went all the way from IT to UEFA winners - Bordeaux came closest in 1995 when they lost in the final. Newcastle actually did 'win' it in 2006, by getting furthest in the UEFA cup proper. Interesting Intertoto fact: The competition was started in the early sixties as a way to play competitive football in the summer - so that betting could continued year-round. UEFA only took over administration of the tournament in 1995. Source: Wikipedia Quote
Kowalski Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 We're fucked. We'll finish 5th. Time for a change of management. Quote
BigAl Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 We're fucked. We'll finish 5th. Time for a change of management. I'd really like to have the belief to take you to task on that, but afraid in the cold light of day, finding it increasingly difficult to think anyway other than that. Still far from convinced that Dingus is the answer to our prayers. Quote

manc_don Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Dingus certainly isn't the answer, though it does appear a fair few fans seem to think so. Can't say I see the evidence for this apart from his red history. Quote

manc_don Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I am at a loss to be honest, got no idea who I want in. It was indeed what I said to Sharpie's mate in the pub on Sunday. I genuinely have no idea who can do a better job than JC, though I don't think JC can do anymore at the club and I know that I wouldn't want any other SPL manager in Quote
