But the new boss has insisted he is still needs to add more flair if Aberdeen are to give the rest of the SPL a scare. McGhee has set his sights on making his former club the best of the rest and believes existing quality like left back Mulgrew, Zander Diamond, Lee Miller and Jamie Langfield will be vital to him achieving that goal. McGhee said: "Charlie Mulgrew is a player I like a lot. He has terrific quality with his left foot. "In the modern game delivery like that can be vital. He will be a big player for us. "Jamie Langfield is also very good player. He has been a consistent keeper over the last two seasons. "Zander Diamond, in front of him, is also a good central defender, who I think has a lot of potential at both ends of the park. "If we can get Jamie Smith back then that would give us a good balance alongside Darren Mackie, Lee Miller, Sone Aluko and Tommy Wright." McGhee is in no doubt his strongest Motherwell team was better than Aberdeen's top XI and that is why improvements need to be made. Express Sport revealed earlier this week he was in for Jim Paterson and Stephen Hughes and is also keen to give Jamie Smith a Pittodrie return. McGhee admitted he is also keen to add to his defence, with out of contract Motherwell defender Brian McLean a possible target, although Hearts are also keen. "I have my own ideas on where I think the squad needs strengthened, the Aberdeen manager admitted. "We are already trying to get Stephen Hughes and Jim Paterson. The left hand side and the midfielder are both areas I feel I need to strengthen although I think Gary McDonald and Mark Kerr are very good players I still feel we need more creativity. "I also think I will need to bring in another defender, with Scott Severin leaving. It only leaves us with Zander Diamond and Andrew Considine. "I know Ricky Foster also played there at the end of last season and who knows he might continue to be an option. "These are all things I can assess when the players return to pre-season. It is something I know I will have to do as quickly as possible. "The one thing I refused to do at Motherwell was just to strengthen the squad. "There is no point in taking in players just to boost the numbers. "I would rather be patient and bring in players who would strengthen the team. If they go right into the team then they are automatically strengthening the squad because they will be pushing one or two others out." Does anyone know much about Brian McLean? Can't say I do. Quote
