Kowalski Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/8211439.stm Aberdeen's youth development operation has netted £100,000 thanks to a famous group of former Pittodrie greats. The club last year played Manchester United as part of its celebrations of the 25th anniversary of winning the European Cup Winners' Cup. The so-called Gothenburg Greats joined with the testimonial committee to raise the money for the club's future. Director of football Willie Miller said the youth development system was needed to nurture more talent. He said: "When we enjoyed so much success in the 80s it was with a squad that was, in the main, a product of the Pittodrie youth development system. "Subsequently, we endured a spell where clubs throughout the country relied on a substantial level of foreign imports, who were often no better than the home grown alternatives, resulting in many teams living beyond their means which, as everyone knows, is not sustainable. "We have to refocus our efforts into the area of youth development. In many ways, we have almost come full circle and there is a realisation and an acceptance that nurturing your own talent is the only viable way for the future for a club such as Aberdeen." The testimonial committee's George Sherriffs added: "The lads were adamant they wanted to make this magnificent gesture and we were delighted to assist in ensuring it happened. "We're all big Aberdeen supporters and a donation of this magnitude really will make a difference." Quote

Reekie_Red Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 Ye coulda at least tried to dress up a bit, Jim. Good to see this sorta stuff. If the youth system is gonna produce more players like Pawlett and Paton, then I'm all for chucking money at that rather than some unknown foreign player who's no better than the shite we've already got here.
