McGhee bans boozy nights for Aberdeen FC stars

Pittodrie boss bids to curtail ‘drink culture’

ABERDEEN FC boss Mark McGhee today confirmed he has banned his players from staging a boys’ night out at Christmas.

McGhee has also urged them to cut back on boozing because he is convinced it will help them perform better for Aberdeen FC.

The squad won’t miss out on the festive fun completely, they have been invited to stage a party as long as their wives and girlfriends also attend.

But McGhee has taken a stand because he firmly believes that drink and footballers are not a cocktail for success.

Yeah long (vodka) overdue. But the proof will be seeing McGhee follow up on his threats. It was one thing from Fergie to ban the players from drinking the night before matches. It was another thing for him to waltz into the pubs and haul the players out by their ears. If McGhee can follow up on his threats with real action, he'll get my vote of confidence.

Boozy pissups have been a part of the Dons players' culture for far too many seasons now. Binge drinking and regular heavy nights on the sauce should not be a part of a professional sportsman's vocabulary. By all means, enjoy a few now and then. But not every weekend, guys!

Or, if you're serious about being a footballer, never!

Would it be that hard to stay off it and have an early night for a few years of your life? It's not like they get paid far too much to kick a ball about.

You've got to be taking the piss surely?  Some of Aberdeens best players from over the years were borderline alcoholics, fuck some of the BEST players the WORLD has EVER seen were more or less alcoholics, times have obviously changed and players are entitled to a drink or two, biog boozy weekends in newcastle is a no no though.

As you say though Mini times have changed. Some of our best players through the years may well have enjoyed a scoop, but think of how much better they could have been if they abstained.

The problem is this country's attitude to drinking, rather than drink itself. A lot of players on the continent will have a beer or a glass of wine with their meals, but that's where it stops. Roberto Carlos used to have a couple of beers with his pre match meal.  The attitude of having to go out and get shit faced is the problem. That problem isn't just one in football, it's societal.

Totally agree with you, this is my main worry for the likes of Pawlett, Paton and mianly Fyvie once he is old enough to go for a drink, I just hope that with mcGhee incharge the young loons will take this onboard and cut out the binge drinking, look at the players in Portugal, Spain and France all at this age and once they get older, I doubt most of them knows what it is like to be pissed, sadly over here it is something that is seen as being cool.

Agreed. On the other note, Desailly said that the biggest sacrafise he had to make to become a prefessional footballer was to go to bed at 10pm every night for 15 years

A few drinks now and then is not a problem, imho. When you're as naturally talented as Paul Gascoigne or George Best, by all means have a few if you want. Chances are, you're so good at football that a drinking habit is just going to lower your ability to "marginally-better than the others". But when you're Darren Mackie (yes I know he's an easy scapegoat), then drinking excessively and smoking a lung in the process is not exactly the best idea you've had when it is clear that playing football to a capable and professional level already takes a lot of hard work when you're sober ... nevermind when you've got to counteract all the boozing with even more hard work!
