ABERDEEN FC have won a club versus country fight with Scotland over rising star Fraser Fyvie.

The 16-year-old, who was outstanding in Aberdeen FC’s 1-1 SPL draw with Hearts at Pittodrie, was due to captain Scotland in three Under-17 European Championship qualifying games this week.

But Aberdeen FC boss Mark McGhee successfully argued that Fyvie should only be used sparingly because he is already an established member of his first team squad.

McGhee said: “We’ve already told Scotland we would prefer if Fraser plays in only one of the games.

“I spoke to coach Ross Mathie about it and he seemed happy enough.â€

The young Scots are due to face Cyprus at Dunfermline tomorrow, Georgia in Kirkcaldy on Thursday and Portugal at the same venue on Sunday.

McGhee said: “Fraser will play in the game they have tomorrow.

“We might reconsider depending on how things go for Scotland in the others.

“But let’s not forget that these teams are there to aid the development of young players.

“When they get to a stage when they are developed, as we believe Fraser is, surely their clubs have to come first?â€

Cant see Scotland letting their captain play only one game in a qualifying competition  :-\

Full report and photos from tonight's game v Cyprus at East End park will be available from me later tonight.

A decent crowd of 1,048 turned up to see the Scotland u17 team v the Cypriot over 25 Greco-Roman wrestling team tonight. Fraser Fyvie once again started as captain and the Cypriots looked not to happy in the cold drizzle.

Fyvies performance in the first half can at best be described as scrappy and was far from his past few performances for the dons first team. He had been given a free role and popped up all over the park but to little avail in a forgettable first half.

The second half saw the introduction of Celtic's 14 year old Somalian born striker Islam Feruz who has been much hyped in the media the past week. Straight away the slight character showed drive into the Cypriot defence with some nice touches. For a wee guy he fairly put himself about and stood up to challenges, Lee Miller should take note. Fyvie began to play a bit better but was having not the greatest impact yet.

After we had just derided the Scotland No.11 as being absolutely dire he ran through to latch onto a ball across the box from Feruz and took it round the keeper and slotted it into the net to give Scotland the lead.

Scotland then seemed to go off the boil and the replacement of Dunfermline's McHattie with No.14 was a step in the wrong was as the replacement was crap. After falling over a few times and missing the ball he allowed the Cypriot striker loads of room who struck a great strike into the back of the net past the exposed keeper. Feruz and Fyvie showed their class and were really pushing to retake the lead, however it went all wrong at the back once again and the Cypriot striker wandered his way round the Scotland defenders who were throwing themselves at his feet in lacklustre tackles then pinged the ball into the back of the net with only a minute remaining. The late winner for them was however tempered with us all laughing at the news the huns had went 4-1 down and watching the hun down the front swear as he read his text updates.

For Scotland to qualify to the championship they will have to win their last two games on Thursday and Sunday - There is no way Ross Mathie the head coach will allow his captain and top player be released to play against Utd.
