MARK McGHEE hopes forgotten hitman Tommy Wright can do for Aberdeen what Danny Cadamarteri has for Dundee United.

Dons gaffer McGhee has Wright back in his plans for tomorrow's visit of United.

Since arriving 14 months ago in a £75,000 deal from Darlington, the injury-plagued striker has started just SIX games.

McGhee hopes Wright, 25, can resurrect his career the same as Cadamarteri has done at the Arabs since arriving from Hudd-ersfield in the summer.

McGhee said: "I hope Tommy can have the same impact as players who find themselves in the last chance saloon - it focuses them.

"They sometimes meet a manager who they respond to. It could be that has happened with Cadamarteri and that is how Craig Levein is getting the performance level out of him.

"Cadamarteri was bouncing around the divisions and not getting games, but people were willing to take a gamble on him because he has pace and strength.

"Now it's paying off for him and United, and it would be good if it happened for Tommy here, but it is still early to make a judgement about him."

McGhee is preparing to meet United for the first time as Aberdeen gaffer with a bit more caution than he did when in charge at Fir Park.

His assessment of Levein's squad last season was something that came back to haunt him as Motherwell failed to make the top six.

He added: "I put my foot in it with United when I was with Motherwell. They had made a lot of signings, but I said I felt they had strengthened their squad - but not their team.

"At that stage I took my best team against their best team and when we went to Tannadice we won 4-0.

"But we were caught out because we had injuries to key players and we only picked up one point from seven games after that.

"United were able to stay a bit longer with the pace than us because of the depth of their squad, and this season is similar in many ways.

"That is not something I hold against Craig. He, like all of us, is trying to work miracles.

"He has found a couple of nuggets for nothing, or for very little money.

"I think he has some really good players there and some have improved, such as David Goodwillie.

"They are as good as anyone in the SPL on their day and we know it will be tough on Saturday."

Meanwhile, Dons legend Alex McLeish is backing Maurice Ross to finally fulfil his potential at Pittodrie. Defender Ross will make his Dons debut tomorrow.

McLeish, who managed Ross at Rangers, said: "Maybe Mo got things a little bit early and was carried away, but he is now a mature lad who can carve out a successful career with Aberdeen.

"Maurice was a young player with terrific potential at Rangers.

"He played one of the best games of his career when we beat Celtic in the 2002 Scottish Cup Final.

"If he can reproduce that form then he'll be a great asset for Aberdeen."

On the subs bench the morn?

Does he not get free of injury every 3 months or so, then play and be not very good ;D

Heres hoping MM can get something out of him.

Now I could be wrong, but can't help but think my attempt at humour may have been missed ;)

I was fairly critical of Wright at the time of his protracted transfer. BUT we have needed (although not as a priority over a 20 goal a season striker) a striker who will batter and bruise opposition defences, especially when you consider the decreasing technical ability within the SPL.

Here's hoping Wright can get a decent run and stay clear of injuries as I think he could be useful member of our squad. McGhee is trying to improve the overall technical ability of our squad and these type of players allow the more technically gifted an opportunity to perform.

at least with Tommy back in the team, dazza and miller will look like players again. ::)

loved the comment about cadamarteri's pace and power, as if tommy has either.

That said hopefully MM's confidence in him can make a difference and the boy starts to play football at last, as he looked totally out of his depth last season.

I appreciate you were being sarcastic here but it might be the most significant contribution that Wright makes ot our squad. If he pops up with a goal or 2 (my expectations are low!) then it might actually put a rocket up Miller, and by fuck he needs one.

Last chance salloon for Wright. Hopefully he finds some kind of form and adds something to the team. I don't think Dazza will ever look like a player redordead ;)

It's been last chance saloon for Mackie too but it has been for years.
