He was hardly a vocal captain, but in terms of bravery I don't think he can be faulted at all, particularly in relation to some of the other players from this glorious era. Absolutely correct. Russell broke his nose a heap of times whilst playing for us. Rodriguez gave him a good kick in the face when he dived in for a brave headed goal against the Huns. I remember an inch-perfect tackle in the penalty box against Celtic on Thomas Gravesen. Grav landed on his head! It was superb. He wasn't the type of captain the screamed at his peers but he was an effective captain. The only thing that doesn't quite go for Russell are his dodgy knees. If he wasn't a bit injury prone he'd be easily capable of playing for Sunderland. I hear people slag him off all the time. He was a poof etc. Rubbish. He was brave countless times. Just because he was quiet doesn't mean he wasn't committed. I'd love to have a fit Russell Anderson back. Quote
