Drewsome Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Plucked from the Scotsman. http://sport.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=380&id=1105862007 Mon 16 Jul 2007 Aberdeen win but must wait on Byrne SCOTT DAVIE AT VICTORIA PARK Buckie Thistle 0 Aberdeen 3 Brewster (31, 52), Mackie (88) ABERDEEN defender Richie Byrne will undergo exploratory surgery today in a bid to save his season before it has even started. The former Dunfermline man has been plagued by a persistent hamstring injury and was limited to just four appearances last term. Now, as the Dons, who beat Buckie Thistle 3-0 in a friendly at Victoria Park yesterday, fly out to Egypt this afternoon, Byrne will be in hospital instead. The news comes as a major blow to the 25-year-old, who had been tipped as a possible successor to Russell Anderson as club captain. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood said: "It's a blow to lose Richie even before the season has started, but this injury has troubled him for too long now and something has to be done. "He was able to do some of the pre-season training, but he wasn't 100 per cent and Richie's game is based on pace and strength so he will have the operation to see what can be done. "He was a candidate to replace Russell Anderson at the start of the campaign, but he will be out for a while yet as a result of this and it's in Richie's interests to get this operation done as quickly as possible." Scotland Under-20 goalkeeper Greg Kelly has been added to the party travelling to Alexandria as a result with trialist Arafath Heuvel also making the 12-day trip to Egypt. The Dutch amateur winger made his debut at Buckie and nearly scored with a shot from the edge of the box after just 20 seconds before setting up Craig Brewster for the opener in the 31st minute. The forward doubled his tally in the 52nd minute when he controlled Ricky Foster's pass and fired home before Darren Mackie completed the scoring two minutes from the end as he converted a Chris Maguire cross. Byrne for Captain... SAY WHAT!?!?! Quote
