Harlaw Park played host to a range of familiar faces as Inverurie Locos and Aberdeen gathered to pay tribute to long-serving Locos defender Roddy Mess along with a number of the centre half's former team mates.

Marc Coull, Ally Graham, Mark Simpson, Richie Singer, Ross McWilliam and Danny Milne all made guest appearances for the home side throughout a game that Aberdeen won by three goals to nil.

The visitors took the lead just seven minutes in when Joseph Shaughnessy rose highest in the Inverurie box to meet a free kick with a powerful header that beat guest goalkeeper Marc Coull in the Locos goal.

The home side threatened on 16 minutes when Cove Rangers striker Danny Milne laid Formartine United winger Richie Singer in on the right side but his shot was saved by Aberdeen goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

At the other end, Aberdeen added a second goal 20 minutes in. A mix up between Coull and left back Scott Buchan was pounced upon by Lewis Davidson as he rolled the loose ball into the net.

Shaughnessy almost had his second goal of the afternoon on 32 minutes when he again out-jumped the Inverurie defence, this time to meet a Dean Jarvis delivery from the left by-line but on this occasion, his header went over the crossbar.

Inverurie had another sight of goal when Tommy Wilson fed his former team mate Milne in on goal but from the edge of the area, the forward blasted over the crossbar.

Effervescent forward Mitchell Megginson was causing the home defence problems and he had the chance to add a third for the Dons just before the interval but his effort was blocked by Coull's legs at the expense of a corner.

Half time: Roddy Mess' Locos XI 0 Aberdeen XI 2

The customary spate of half time substitutions followed before Aberdeen added goal number three just six minutes after the restart. The strike was a fortunate one as Ryan Jack's cross in from the left was diverted past substitute goalkeeper Andy Reid by Formartine defender Mark Simpson.

The home side almost pulled a goal back with their best chance of the game on 72 minutes. It was a trio of substitutes who were involved with Jamie Michie playing Ardevan Djahansovzi in down the touch line. The Locos striker then squared the pull across the face of goal but the delivery was just a bit too far in front of Neil Gauld as he attempted to apply the finishing touch.

Impressive Dons midfielder Ryan Jack then kept Andy Reid busy at the other end with a flurry of long range shots in a short space of time before Inverurie's Andy Bisset played a free kick across the face of goal but again the killer touch in the centre was lacking.

The home side forced several corner kicks towards the end as they pushed for a consolation goal but it wasn't to be as Aberdeen recorded the victory on an enjoyable afternoon at Harlaw.
