Cockwomble appointed as the leader Neil Doncaster has been appointed as chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League. The Englishman, who was chief executive of the Scottish Premier League, has beaten off the challenge of Scottish Football League counterpart David Longmuir to lead the new 42-club organisation. Both men were interviewed by a three-man panel at Hampden Park on Wednesday, which was reported to be Aberdeen chief executive Duncan Fraser, Celtic director Eric Riley, former Scottish Premier League chairman Ralph Topping and Stenhousemuir director Bill Darroch. An SPFL statement read: "The Remuneration and Appointment Committee of the SPFL can advise that Neil Doncaster has been appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer of the SPFL. "The SPFL looks forward to continuing with the implementation of one representative body and the commencement of season 2013/14 for the benefit of all 42 member clubs." Doncaster appeared to be the clear favourite after the merger agreement was held up last week partly by the emergence of an outstanding £100,000 bonus for Longmuir, of which some SFL board members were unaware. The limited selection pool has been widely criticised but it is believed that considering a fresh candidate could have fallen foul of employment law. Doncaster's most important and pressing task is to secure a sponsor for the new league with the season starting four weeks on Saturday. Quote

I'm sure there were several alternatives that could have been followed which may have resulted in a better appointment for the good of the game in Scotland, but this was the cheapest and easiest route to go. SPFL chief Neil Doncaster insists “uncertainty” remains the key reason that the Scottish leagues remain without a sponsor. With Clydesdale Bank’s deal to name the SPL running out at the end of last season, the newly formed four tier SPFL is still searching for a title sponsor, almost a month into the season. Speaking at the draw for the third round of the League Cup, Doncaster said that “lengthy conversations” were still taking place with potential backers but added that the uncertainty of the summer was still having an effect. He said: “Work is ongoing to bring in a title sponsor for the league and also to support the League Cup. “There has been a huge amount of uncertainty as to what any sponsor would be getting involved with. “It is only since the end of June that we have agreed the way forward for a single league covering all 42 clubs. “Conversations are ongoing and we’re extremely hopeful of getting the right sponsor in to be part of an exciting time in Scottish football.
