Young rounds on ‘joke’ Aberdeen

veteran midfielder criticises team-mates as McGHEE’S INTERVIEW ANGER FURTHER EXPOSES THE CRACKS

Aberdeen midfielder Derek Young turned on his team-mates after the shocking 3-1 home defeat by Hamilton Accies at Pittodrie.

The Dons were losing 3-0 and down to nine men following the dismissal of defenders Richard Foster and Zander Diamond before Young scored his third goal of the season.

The Dons appear destined to finish the season in ninth place and the cracks in the facade of the club were further exposed when manager Mark McGhee expressed his anger when asked in a broadcast media interview if he feared for his future. McGhee cut the interview short and Young knows there can be no excuses after the 11th home defeat of the season in all competitions.

The midfielder, who turns 30 on May 27, said: “It was a bit of a shambles, losing a goal in the first minute.

“The sendings-off were ridiculous, the players know it themselves. But we have done it so many times this year and it just lets everybody down. It’s a joke, there is no other word for it. We should have won at St Johnstone the previous Saturday with a good fighting performance but we never did.

“The pressure was off and we could have shown everyone what we were capable of but we showed the dark side and that’s not a good thing. We thought we had got rid of it but it came back and it’s horrible.”

McGhee lambasted his team for the latest loss but said he saw nothing new in the performance and Young said: “There are 20 professionals in the dressing-room who should be fighting for every game for a massive club. I don’t care if it’s the end of the season, we should be doing a lot better than that.

“Giving away a corner and not clearing our lines in the first minute led to their goal and it was a bit of a joke.

“The manager’s reaction was not great. He could have said a lot more but it was as if we just gave up, which is frustrating. The manager had a few choice words to say and there is no one who could say anything back.

“We are at one of the best clubs in Scotland and we should be a lot better, not just today but throughout the season and whatever comes our way is deserved.

“I thought we had turned a corner in the past couple of matches but from the first minute we didn’t look as though we were interested.”

Foster and Diamond became the sixth and seventh Aberdeen players to be sent off this season and Young added: “The players who were sent off apologised straight away. But the apologies were too late and the red cards throughout the year have killed us.

“We were being well-beaten but you cannot allow frustration to get the better of you and they are going to miss games – which is another nightmare. It should not happen from two experienced players. They know it.”

Young is one of the few players under contract for next season and is preparing for a summer of upheaval.

He added: “There will be a lot of players out of contract and it is going to be a rebuilding job. The manager is looking at a lot of players and the names being mentioned are going to make us a better team. He is in the job and looking for good players, so that is good enough for me.”

He's no world beater, but he definitely cares.

at least he gives a fuck!

Mr Kerr......this is how YOU should have been acting ALL season. You are the team captain but it is a squad player who has the balls to stand up and tell it like it is. And you wonder why the fans want rid of you! >:D

Kerr will start and be wearing the armband i'd guess on Weds, depending if he can battle the flu than he must have gained by going to the darts on Thursday night.

What I really have trouble understanding about these guys is that they're not even that good, yet they think they should be allowed to stroll about, play like shite and still get paid a lot of money.

If truly great players like Iniesta, Xavi, Schweinsteger, Frings, etc etc, can all knock their pans in during a game, as well as grace it with skill and passion, how the fuck do we get lumbered with players too bored to play for us, too lazy to try or who think they're better than they are and yet seem willing to go a lower level english division just because they'll get a bit more money.

People like Duff, Young and Mackie are not the best players in the world - not by a long shot, but at least you know you will get a full game's worth of honest endeavour out of them. In the SPL, a team of tryers won't perform at a worse level than the current pile of mince we've been watching this season.

Drawing 4-4 with the Green and White shite, and a win over the blue shite, might be all very jolly and thrilling, but it's against those teams that, realistically, we should be comfortable against, that our record is absymal.

4 points from Falkirk

4 points from Hamilton

4 points from St Johnstone

4 points against Kilmarnock (with 1 more game to come)

6 points against St Mirren  (  "      "        "          "  )

None of those teams have "quality" - they just seem to try harder.

Spot on, mate.

What I wouldn't give for a Paul Sheerin, Stevie Tosh and (even) Andy Dow these days. Average players who put in a shift and looked like they cared.

Mark Kerr, Charlie Mulgrew, Gary MacDonald, and any of the rest of you who might be reading (not that any of you will be), you aren't fit to shine their boots, and they were SHITE! Think about THAT when you're on the dole, waiting for some English division one team to miraculously notice how much they need you.

Good on young. For all his flaws,  its nice to see a player with genuine passion. I will use a quote that an ex manager said before he left. 'for the most of these players the only way is down from Aberdeen'. enjoy your fall you spineless cunts.

Well said and good to know he cares, however he is still pish and should not be at Aberdeen if we want to be anything more than bottom of the table shite.

I still reckon we have to accept the presence of players similar to Young as squad players, backfill for injuries etc. He was in the team that finished 4th last season. Not a first teamer by any means but "good to have about the place" and more importantly cheap and grateful.

Agreed unfortunatly.

Can't help but like Derek Young, despite the fact he had almost zero footballing ability. Hopefully he takes the captains armband on Wednesday.

Agree with this. I've noticed all season that he's never scared to tell someone what he thinks of them. If some cunt has dived he'll let them know. He's committed and he definately cares. It's a shame that his footballing ability is limited but right now he'd be one of my first names on the team sheet.
