ZANDER Diamond last night owned up to letting his Aberdeen team-mates down after his crazy red card at the weekend.

But his apology might not save him and Richard Foster, who was also sent off in the 3-1 defeat to Hamilton, from receiving record fines from their club.

Mark McGhee is allowed to fine the players two weeks' wages for indiscipline but could impose a heavier sanction with the permission of the board at Pittodrie.

The Dons boss said: "It was totally irresponsible and poor professionalism from two players of their experience.

"There'll be no mercy shown and they can hardly expect any."

Diamond doesn't expect any sympathy over what happened as the Dons dismal end to the season continued.

The 25-year-old who, like Foster, picked up a second yellow card for a crude lunge at an Accies player, said: "The red mist descended because of a build-up of frustration.

"I should have been experienced enough to know not to get into bother again after being yellow-carded earlier in the match.

"I took a step back once I was inside the dressing room and real ised I'd let my team-mates down.

"Nobody needs to point any fingers because I know I was in the wrong and I've taken all of the criticism I've received on board.

"There was a time in the season when we were thinking about get ting a top-six place for Aberdeen and then we found ourselves in a relegation battle instead.

"It's a great shame to find a club of our size in this predicament and I was guilty of letting a tough time get on top of me."

Diamond and Foster are now waiting to find out if the club goes through with their threat to impose record fines.

But McGhee didn't sound as if he was in the mood to show leniency to his players.

He said: "They have let themselves down very badly.

"It's bad enough they are suspended for the game against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night but it looks as if they could be in line for further suspensions because of the points system.

"That could hit us hard at the start of next season when we will be trying to make a good start. What if we have to face Celtic on the opening day without them?" Aberdeen's director of football Willie Miller fears the cash-strapped club could now be hit by an SFA fine for misbehaviour.

He said: "We've picked up 10 red cards this season which could leave the club open to punishment from the SFA.

"This is unacceptable and something we' ll be addressing before the start of next season.

"I was disgusted by the lack of discipline shown by some of our players. Mark will get full backing in dealing with Diamond and Foster because they deserved to be sent off."

Meanwhile, McGhee insists Aberdeen will have at least eight new players by the start of next season. He said: "The squad isn't big enough and that has left exposed. That is something I will address.

"We only have 12 players under contract at the moment which means we are going to need at least eight new players to start with.

"I will make these changes, I can promise the fans that. There is a lot wrong that needs to be put right."

Yes they lost the plot but is it really worth fining them more than Mark Kerr who was fighting this time last season.

To be fair there was a different manager in place at the time Kerr was doing his Rocky impression.  We don't know how McGhee would have dealt with that incident.

I'm not altogether convinced handing out record fines is the way forward. Perhaps the usual fine would suffice in this instance with MM telling the players any more stupidity will result in hefty fines.

Exactly what I was thinking TF and Mizer.  Why not fine the underachievers?

Because its not in their contracts that you can.

Funny the way McGhee has gone from no fines for getting sent off to record fines in less than 9 months. Wonder if he is maybe feeling the pressure.

How do you determine who gets fined though? Would you be fining the entire playing staff? (Well the ones who played)

There's that too.

had any of our players for the rest of the season been tackling with the same urgency as Diamond and Foster did we probably wouldn't have been the pushovers we have been all season.  I think it is clear they were the acts of guys who were frustrated at what was going on around them. That doesn't excuse their stupidity, but it certainly reveals something a bit deeper.

Bobby that's total nonsense, if players tackled like that with no attempt at playing the ball we'd have more than two players sent off every week.

Also there's an article in the P&J with McGhee telling Mulgrew to wrap up whilst saying Kerr and Mcdonald deserve the abuse they are getting. Times are changing.

Read it again. I said with the same urgency, not with the same technique.

Wrap up?

Divisions in the dressing room, half the first team out of contract, and record fines for those that will be here next season for being in the frustrated position of giving a shit.

There's fk all harsh about it, they both got sent off on purpose, Foster challenge was a total joke and Diamond even pointed to the guy minutes before, despite being already on a booking, and folk want these  cants to be our next captain(s).

Question is though, who would you give it to then? Was there anymore said on the alleged bust up between McGhee and Langfield?

I'm not sure if anything further was said, rumours abound that Langfield's leaving and he hasn't been saying much publicly lately so maybe there's something in it?

It's harsh because it is quite obviously inconsistent with how other red carded players have been dealt with throughout the rest of the season. That, however, is completely irrelevant as even the mere mention of this will surely add to the dis-harmonious state of the squad and at this stage of the season is likely to not have been forgotten about come the start of pre-season.

Agreed.  Usual fine and a complete rollocking will suffice.  I know they let the team, fans and individual players down but where do you stop with this. If somebody gets sent off against Kille, 4 weeks wages. If it happens at the weekend 5 weeks wages!!

The two players were arguably our best performers (although Zander was injured for a lot of it).  They were probably mad with the dross that were apparently playing around them in there team.  Embarressed? probably!!

When you are trying your best and you can see certain individuals not pulling their weight and knowing that there aint a way back for the team, then if there is a way out, some might take it  :-\  Not saying that was the case, just a point.

If Zander was captain would this happen?  ???
