Mulgrew set to join Sheffield United

ABERDEEN defender Charlie Mulgrew is expected to seal his departure from Pittodrie next week when he signs for Sheffield United.

 

The former Scotland under-21 international has verbally agreed a three-year deal with the English Championship club and will complete the formalities upon his return from holiday in Turkey.

 

Mulgrew, who joined the Dons from Wolves two years ago, has offers from other clubs in England, Brentford and Huddersfield, as well as Portuguese club Maritimo, but has decided to link-up with Blades manager Kevin Blackwell following the offer of a three-year contract.

 

Blackwell said: “He is a player we are interested in but it is at a delicate stage.

 

“He has been on our radar for a while, although his agent is talking to other clubs.”

 

Aberdeen have added another fixture to their pre-season campaign.

 

The Dons will head to Glebe Park to face Brechin City in the David Will memorial match on Tuesday, August 3 (kick-off 7.45pm).

 

Mark McGhee’s men face Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Dunfermline before heading for a week in England from July 23 where they will play against Tamworth, Port Vale and Brighton and Hove Albion.

 

They return to the north-east ahead of the Scottish Premier League kick off on August 14.

It was in the EE last night too. Made me sad. Mulgrew might have been a cunt but he turned into a decent player whose goals we needed last season. Otherwise it would have been curtains for us in the SPL.

if it means the money goes towards another striker or another midfielder then I'm all for it. We've got McArdle, Diamond, Considine, Ifil, Foster, Grassi (unfortunately) as well as Smith from the youths. That should be enough cover for the back.

I know in all seriousness though, we need to replace him, as he was a source of a number of goals. Fozzy and Grassi do not give us that outlet. I know Mulgrew didn't give us many goals in the end, but the fact is, he did create more than most.

 

But, I stand by the general stance of my post, I really do worry for next season. I just hope McGhee can pull it out of the hat.

Mulgrew shuns Blades to join Celtic

Charlie Mulgrew is poised to make a surprise return to Celtic. The 24-year-old defender, who is out of contract after two seasons at Aberdeen, is set to shun Sheffield United after a late bid from his former club.

 

The free-kick specialist was on the verge of a move to the English Championship but the lure of a return to Parkhead is likely to prove too much to resist after Hoops manager Neil Lennon made his move.

 

Mulgrew came through the youth ranks at Celtic but was transferred to Wolves after a disagreement with then manager Gordon Strachan. He signed for the Dons in a £100,000 deal in the summer of 2008 and impressed during two seasons at Pittodrie, particularly with his dead-ball prowess.

 

Lennon, who was captain when Mulgrew was a youth player, remained an admirer throughout and is keen to give the defender a second chance at the Glasgow club.

 

Aberdeen were resigned to losing the Scotland under-21 international. He rejected an initial offer of a new deal and then knocked back an improved proposal.

 

Mulgrew had intimated he was keen to prove himself in England after an unhappy spell at Wolves and on loan at Southend but the chance to return to his boyhood club holds special appeal.

 

Davide Grassi, meanwhile, will return to Aberdeen next week to complete the signing of a new one-year contract at Pittodrie.

 

The 24-year-old Italian defender was originally offered a six-month deal but after talks with Dons director of football Willie Miller he has been granted his wish of a longer commitment.

 

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee was impressed with the former Parma youth product’s attitude and application last season and believes there is room for improvement in his game.

 

Miller said: “Davide is not in the country, so the deal is not done by any means. But I can say the talks with the player have been very positive.

 

“Mark was impressed with the player’s attitude last season and his bravery could certainly not be faulted. Davide made it clear during the contract talks he has a great desire to stay at Aberdeen.”

 

Grassi made 17 starts last season. Primarily a left full back, the Italian operated in numerous roles and it is that versatility which convinced McGhee of his worth to his squad. Grassi said: “Signing for Aberdeen is fantastic for me. I am convinced we will have a better season.”

Lennon was in the Sunday Herald at the weekend saying he believes Celtic have to start buying more British & Irish players as their work ethic and toughness is required at Celtic Park... does he know that if he signs Mulgrew that work ethic and toughness isn't part of the deal?
