Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne has insisted manager Mark McGhee retains the unanimous backing of the board, despite the disasters of this season.

 

McGhee came close to losing his job after the worst loss in the Dons’ 107-year history, the 9-0 defeat by Celtic at Parkhead on November 6.

 

The shambolic nature of the display prompted the club to brief the media the manager’s position would be untenable if the Dons failed to beat Inverness on November 9, but the improved display, albeit in another defeat, was enough to convince the directors to keep the manager.

 

Milne insists no ultimatum was given to the manager but the fact remains it took five days after the disgraceful loss for Milne and his directors to give their manager a vote of confidence.

 

Crisis? What crisis? But as much as the directors may have wanted to bury their heads in the sand and hope the anger would all go away, it became apparent a decision had to be made.

 

Milne said: “We recognised certain strengths and qualities Mark had when we gave him the job and we still believe he is capable of doing the job.

 

“Part of the responsibility of the board is to look at all the options. I am not saying one of the options was not to consider a change as we would be foolish if we didn’t do that. It's very much acknowledged by Mark, Willie (Miller), Duncan (Fraser) and the rest of the board we've got to start doing tangible things behind the scenes which are going to enable us to get better performances out of players, to get a much stronger team and collective performance.

 

“These are the areas where there's been a lot of very blunt, direct and frank discussions taking place over the last few weeks.

 

“It's been a combination of Mark showing his determination to see this job through and what he's come forward with in terms of changes he is going to start to produce and additional things he is going to introduce which has given the board the confidence to back him.

 

“(I was) slightly encouraged the team put in a better performance. I think everyone was committed and determined to try to get a result out of the game.”

 

The embattled chairman has remained out of the public eye throughout the club’s shocking run of form, keeping his media appearances restricted to the club website.

 

Audiences with the chairman are usually restricted to a briefing at the club’s annual meeting with chief executive Fraser and football director Miller put forward to field media inquiries.

 

However, with the supporters turning their attention away from the manager and the players and now fixed firmly on the board of directors, Milne has made a rare public appearance.

 

The Dons lost again at Rangers last Saturday but much more will be expected of McGhee and his players when St Johnstone visit Pittodrie tomorrow.

 

The Aberdeen manager goes in search of only his second league win in 12 matches.

You know what to do then Stewarty. Time to put your money where your mouth is, and if you don't want to use your money, then actively seek investment. It's no longer acceptable just being there now. We need something to galvanise the club and the support, show us we have something worth believing in here.

We're going to start an incentive programme for the players.

Instead of a Man of the Match, the sponsors will vote for Worst Player each game.  That player will then be taken round the back of the RDS and shot. His rotting corpse will then be displayed in the home dressing room as a reminder for the others.

Why not just wind the club up, sell the assets and start again somewhere else.
