If you click the link and then take a look at our starting XI and then a wee glance at the league table... what do you mean you've not cheered up?? Quote
dickofthedons Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 A £650,000 signing from PSV 21 years ago, wonder what that'd work out as today... And 14 games into the season and only 9 goals conceded..... if only. You're right, it hasn't cheered me up Quote
dickofthedons Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 A £650,000 signing from PSV 21 years ago, wonder what that'd work out as today... If anyone cares I've answered my own question, with inflation that would be £1.3m today. I know it means fuck all and its changed times but still.... Quote
bilbobaggins Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Thats even quite simplified and doesn't take into account the above inflation rises in transfer fees. He won the European Cup the year before he signed for us, in relative terms it's like us signing Milito from Inter. Quote
dickofthedons Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 I know but that was easier to find out the answer to. I was gonna look at the tranfers of top players in 1989 but seemed too much effort Quote
mini59dons Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 I think I've got some grit in my eye or something!!! Quote
Mentorred Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 I was there also. Remember it like it was yesterday Quote
BigAl Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 For those too young to remember it, here you go Special mention again to Caddy who posted it on YouTube Quote
One Bobby Clark Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Gives you goosebumps...... those were the days right enough ! Mind you, it wasn't always sweetness and light. Bett was called lazy and a shirker, Connor (and his mega 'tache) ended up in TRF as Bobby's Blouse and of course we had "Dobbin" at centre half. Quote

tlg1903 Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 alll i could think off when i looked at that line up was how easily would that team piss on the spl now? i dont think its any exaggeration to say it would win by 15 points at least. I just hope that scottish football is nearing the end of its current cycle. It needs completely rebuilt and the only way to do that is to cut losses and start again from scratch Quote

glasgow sheep Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 The red final. Back when OBE was a fanzine editor rather than a lacky on the board. Quote
BobbyBiscuit Posted November 22, 2010 Author Report Posted November 22, 2010 It wasn't the Red Final, it was the Northern Light that had the Bobby's Blouse comic strip. Also had a comic strip with Irvine as a horse. Quote

BobbyBiscuit Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 D'oh you're right. Must be my age. Did they not have a bit too with Bett playing while smoking a pipe and wearing his slippers? Aye, that sounds about right. I saw a post from fatshaft on Mad recently saying that the internet has been the best thing for the careers of Irvine and Bett... their careers have been elevated to new heights it seems on the forums. I kind of understand his point especially in Irvine's case. Bett was a cracking player on his game but when he couldn't be arsed... fucking hell it was frustrating and painful viewing. Quote
baggy89 Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Not sure if the internet plays a significant role. You tend to forget bad bits over time and keep the good memories and when you take into account someone like Bett just wouldn't be playing for a team like Aberdeen nowadays and Irvine could walk into our current team and make an immense improvement (for evidence look at Kirk Broadfoot playing regularly for a hun team 27 points ahead of us), it's hardly surprising they are remembered fondly. Quote
BobbyBiscuit Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 I see your point Baggy, but I tend to think that just because we're shite now it doesn't make Irvine for example any better a player than he actually was. He'd walk into this team, but who wouldn't? John Inglis would get a game too, as would Ian and Craig Robertson... they were still shite for the time they played and would still be shite now, just slightly better than the other shite around them. Tyrant Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Jesus what a team we had. I think I'm going to greet. Quote
TENEMENTFUNSTER Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Bett was a fucking great player but yes, you knew in the first minute what game you were getting! Irvine was not a great player but it certainly doesn't take great players to eclipse what we currently have, as has been said before, average players from the past would walz into this team never mind great ones. Quote
Madbadteacher Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Irvine was what we need now. COMMITTED. Spoke to hime a couple of times and he was always aware he "wasn't the best player" but would still go out, give 100% every game, and work his arse off to help any of his teammates, young or old. Never hid. Never thought he was guaranteed a start and continually worked on his game. (Are you listening ZD?) And he did score THAT penalty! Quote
Guest donindundonald Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 That team - beter in every dept than the rangers one that year IMHO. Our team today - sadly lacking in a few depts IMHO Quote

Madbadteacher Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 You sure you're not talking about Darren Mackie there? Mackie does have some of those qualities, but............................ Irvine scored a cup winning penalty in a shootout: Mackie, in a shootout at Firhill..............................shudder Quote
