TENEMENTFUNSTER Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Could be worse, you could be the knob in that picture at Perth of the Globe and Glasgow Uni flags with the Irish rugby shirt on. Then you would need to be labelled a proper cunt Quote

Tyrant Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 I'm a "nit". Thanks to the Huns I associate Union Jacks with "loyalist" hun pish. I'd rather see the flag gotten to fuck. Quote

jmo Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 I don't like it but not really because I have a problem with the union flag generally but because I think in the context of a football it seems to be threateningly close to bringing political opinions and sentiments. I don't think the same applies for the saltire as the Scottish flag doesn't represent anything political in a football context like the union flag does. Just think anything coming close to politics or representation of political or nationalist views should be kept apart from the Aberdeen support. Quote
tsr Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Can't see the pic in this thread, odd? I have seen the flag, I am most definitley in the middle gorund of not really caring but am more than surprised at the grief its causing. Quote
Ajja Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 For me, the flag in question is just a flag. It doesn't really affect me either way. The sentiment that has been expressed across several Aberdeen forums on this subject I find significantly more concerning. By its definition politics is intrinsically linked to all aspects of society as it relates to the way in which human beings organise themselves, make collective decisions and exact power over one another. Ergo, football cannot be entirely de-coupled from politics. This is particularly the case in Scotland where politics and religion are bound together as are football and religion, unfortunately. For me one of the most important decisions I made in my life at the tender age of 7 (pre-Fergie for the avoidance of doubt!) was to follow a team who were not part of that bond. I may not have understood much of the political ramifications of following the OF but I was aware of the bile and hatred that surrounded them and I didn't want it. I have grown up being proud of a club that not only avoided such bigotry and hatred but wore that position as a badge of honour. As a socialist I believe it is essential that prejudice, bigotry and venom towards a particular group in society should not be encouraged or supported. I like to think that this viewpoint tends to match well with being an Aberdeen supporter. For that reason, I think it is crucial that we do not get caught up in a situation where we are exhibiting the same set of unhealthy prejudices and paranoia as those who follow the OF. As an Aberdeen supporter, I will always look to stand free. Quote
kelt Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I'm anti-Union, that flag is a symbol of the Union, so I'm agin it. I'm a reasonable man, but seeing that flag with 'ABERDEEN' on it makes me angry in the head. Quote
BobbyBiscuit Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I'm not overly bothered by it, I'd just rather we didn't have it in our support. Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Can't say I give a fuck if I'm going to be honest, in fact I'm not enough bothered enough to click 'Aye' or 'Nit'. I certainly wouldn't go to the lengths of fuming on chatsites or shouting at the boys who waved it. That to me just suggests that AFC fans would rather moan about their own club and fans than concentrate on supporting the team or anything related to the club. Some bright spark decided to change an emblem of a Communist freedom fighter (or terrorist as the saying goes) into a Willie Miller t-shirt a few years ago and nobody seemed to have a problem with that. If it was an Israeli flag or Hammer and Sickle with a couple Euro stars thrown in for good measure(TMSuperstar Tradesman2011) I doubt anyone would bat an eyelid. So why bother getting your red and white knickers in a twist about this? Personally I've a bigger problem with a flag with Taz on it sporting a Dons kit: Never understood that but again, I'm not going to get all cyber-angry. Quote

Because Che and sickles aren't associated with the Hunnery. The problem stems from Huns waving Union Jacks constantly. That's why I'd rather see us bin it anyway. Quote
manc_don Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Personally, I'd be angry if we had an israeli flag. But we don't so I'm not Quote
octavion Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 it can be arranged just for you so you can get all stroppy to Quote
