When we unearth the new Leighton (or Clark (or McGarr even!)) we can dump Langfield. Until then, with NO CASH we're unlikely to be able to replace him with better.

Unless you really want to try to afford Cammy Bell's wages vs some League 1 side in England?

And No. Settling for Clangers isn't my No 1 choice, but financially we're fucked and can barely afford to pay the "quality" of players we have.........so who get's cut for a new goalie? (And I know Mizer's choice!)

So you know that Langfield is the absolute best we can get for his money (whatever that is)?

Your last paragraph also suggests he is the best we can get for the money we pay him. We don't have to pay him off as he's out of contract this summer, if he is the best we can get for what will be a handsome wage, then Dave is right, we'd be as well packing it in right now.  The whole "but who can we get for that money?" seems to be the staple response of those who can't actually back up their own claims that this guy is good enough to play in goals for us.  He isn't. over the course of a season and the pressures that throws up, he clearly isn't and he has proven that season upon season he has been with us.

We could do better than Langfield and it would be silly for me or anyone else to argue that we can't, but we could also do a lot worse. Every keeper we've brought to the club since Langfield became our number one has been worse than him. Bossu was a joke. Nelson looked worse when given the chance (Falkirk 3-1 game). Soutar, despite a strange bandwagon that got going at one point, was worse and as much to blame for QotS as anyone. Howard was given a chance this year and looked worse. Youngsters like Bain and Bateman haven't pushed into the first team.

Granted you can blame the managers who signed these keepers for that, but it also tells you that in amongst the kinds of keepers we're in the market for, Langfield is pretty decent. He's not the best we can get, but if you used that standard to judge players then nobody in our squad would meet it - I'm sure there's a better midfielder out there than Milsom on the same wages, a better striker than Vernon on the same wages, and so on.

Obviously not making myself clear, what I meant was we should have scouting, the likes of which picked up McGarr, (yes really!), Gunn, Theo Clark, Leighton, before they were gonna cost us a fortune.

We need to find another "unknown" give him to Bandy and have faith to play him regularly.

I am NOT FOR ONE MINUTE SAYING LANGFIELD IS THE BEST WE CAN DO, but we need to think "outside the box" (I hate that phrase, sorry) for our next keeper, and give whoever it is a long first team run.

Glad you finally got your point across mbt ;) we've all been saying this for years, but we now have a manager who will hopefully identify the correct personell that will benefit the squad. Maybe even someone who doesn't wear gay boots when his coach isn't looking.

See your point MBT, and couldn't agree more. If we're determined to sign players from the SPL and lower league England then yes, Langfield may look OK (even then I'm sceptical!). We should be scouting mainland Europe for this one, there is undoubtedly talent out there.

"we could do a lot worse" is another very poor reason for keeping him on.  Langfield lost his place to Soutar, Howard and Nelson at different stages of his career with us. Hardly inspiring but it says it all.

Cammy Bell is out of contract at Killie this summer and has been frozen out by Mixu, not even getting on the bench nowadays because he is refusing to sign new contract allegedly.

Could do worse than enquire about him.

On seperate issue take point about scouring Europe for a keeper. Don't know who has done the scouting for keepers at the Arabs in the past few seasons, but they certainly seem to have managed to unearth a few decent enough keepers without busting the bank in the process

Out injured according to an interview in todays daily retard. Not been that impressed with Bell when I have seen him and do not think he is any better than what we have.

Different slant from today's Sun, and pretty much confirms what I was told, apart from the bit about clubs down south now being in for him.

CAMMY BELL'S Kilmarnock axing has sparked a Championship chase down south.

SunSport understands Doncaster, Coventry and Derby are all on high alert after the out-of-contract keeper was dropped because he failed to sign a new deal.

We revealed in January Rangers and Aberdeen were both keen on Scotland's third-choice keeper as his Rugby Park deal ran down.

But the trio of English sides are among a clutch of clubs south of the border who have been watching him.

Boss Mixu Paatelainen - who insisted in January that any contractual issues would not influence his team selections - confirmed to Bell yesterday he'd be frozen out as long as he continued stalling over an extension.

Finn Anssi Jaakkola took over in goal when Bell picked up an ankle injury nearly three weeks ago and now looks set to be given an extended run in the side
