Kilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen is on the shortlist for the vacant manager's job at Scunthorpe United.

Paatelainen is one of four candidates the Championship club are considering to succeed the sacked Ian Baraclough.

Killie chairman Michael Johnston has given Scunthorpe permission to speak to Paatelainen and his representatives.

Others in contention are former Swindon manager Danny Wilson, ex-Charlton boss Phil Parkinson and the current Bury boss Alan Knill.

The Killie chairman is currently abroad on holiday but he is determined to pull out all the stops to keep Paatelainen at the Scottish Premier League club.

The former Finnish international has 15 months of his contract left to run at Rugby Park, but the interest from elsewhere may see the Ayrshire club try to tie him up on an improved longer-term deal.

When Paatelainen took over at Kilmarnock in June 2010 he signed a two-year deal with a one-year option.

Scunthorpe are not the first team to show an interest in Paatelainen following his success in turning Kilmarnock around.

Last season relegation threatened the Ayrshiremen, but this term Paatelainen has them set for a top-six finish and in contention for a European place playing some of the most entertaining football in the league.

Finland's national team are also looking for a new manager and Paatelainen's name has been strongly linked with that post in the last couple of months.

It is not the first time Scunthorpe have looked to entice personnel away from Kilmarnock.

Earlier this season the English club tried to lure striker Conor Sammon to Glanford Park. However, the Irishman turned down the chance to move there in a £600,000 deal.

If Paatelainen lands the job at Scunthorpe he will be re-united with full-back Ben Gordon.

Killie had the defender on loan for the first half of this season from Chelsea and Scunthorpe have a similar arrangement with the Stamford Bridge side until the summer.

Really emphasises the decline in scottish football when the manager of an established SPL team is being touted for a club heading to league 2 next season.

Has anyone here ever been to scunthorpe?

Wonder who'll get the Killie job. Can't think of an obvious candidate. Someone cheap and willing to work with a non-existent budget nae doot!

Is the Finland gig not just a part time one ???

Where abouts is Wee Gus these days ?

Wonder why it went badly at Brazil 1970 though?

Good point though tlg, it would be a shame to see another 'don't get relegated' manager like Gus squirm back in.

Actually, Killie would probably go under if they got relegated, what's McGhee up to?  ;D

* There were major issues at Brazil 1970.  One of the biggest factors behind MP doing quite poorly there was the complete lack of professionalism and indiscipline within the squad.  It wasn't unheard of for players to walk off the training ground only an hour or so into training.  There are other scenarios but I'd be here all day.

* = Allegedly
