Friday night football pilot project

Following the pilot Friday night football game held here at Pittodrie, we are kindly asking our supporters to provide us with their feedback on the Friday night football concept.

 

Please take a minute or so to complete the survey below and give us your thoughts.

This is still very much a pilot project and as such it is vital that we gather feedback to allow us to further discuss the positives and negatives of such a scheme.

 

Given the landscape Scottish football currently finds itself in, we as a club are keen to explore every potential avenue in a bid to boost attendances and improve the matchday experience for our loyal supporters.

These ideas they are putting forward to get fans through the gate are all fine and dandy.  Except for one thing.  Have they bothered to consult the fans or listen to what they actually want?

 

For years groups of supporters have been asking to have standing sections at grounds, to be able to buy a beer during the game or at half time, and there's sections of fans that have tried all sorts of things to liven/brighten up match days yet they've been turned away by the club(s) or met with resistance.

 

Now they've introduced something out of the blue that logistically will not work for travelling fans.

 

Nevermind, at least there's enough gloryhunting OF fans in each town to keep them flooding through the gates.

Friday night football was done because of the answers to a SPL fans survey.

The Scottish Premier League have vowed to explore further the idea of Friday night football.

 

The SPL moved Aberdeen's home game against Dunfermline to a Friday night last month as a pilot exercise and were encouraged by the results, although Pars fans were not as impressed as their rivals.

 

After 1,200 Aberdeen and Dunfermline fans responded to a survery, SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster wrote on his blog on the SPL website: "In the end, 8,333 fans attended the game - 661 more than had turned up to Aberdeen's previous Saturday 3pm home game, against Kilmarnock. Coming as it did on the back of Aberdeen's defeat to East Fife in the Scottish Communities League Cup, that attendance figure was an extremely encouraging start to the pilot."

 

Commenting on the fans' responses, Doncaster said: "Some absolutely loved the experience and want to play on Friday every week. Others never want to see Football Friday again.

 

"Fortunately, there are also plenty of views in between for the SPL and the clubs to consider. There is no 'silver bullet' single solution to the various issues confronting the game in Scotland. And there is no monopoly on good ideas.

 

"Some ideas will undoubtedly work better than others.

 

"And some ideas may suit some supporters more than others.

 

"But what's vital is that we remain open-minded, try out different suggestions and give new ideas a chance."

 

The survey showed that 88% of Aberdeen fans felt the atmosphere was better than a Saturday or Sunday game and only 20% said the kick-off time was less convenient, with four-fifths keen for another Friday game. But 86% of Dunfermline fans said the scheduling was inconvenient.
