The Democrats have no-one to blame but themselves.

Totally agree

Anyone that can't beat a narcissistic convicted felon needs to look long and hard at how they ran their campaign

One positive however is that I guess he'll make the streets of Springfield safer for cats and dogs 😉

Just looking at the financial markets which seem to have reacted favourably to the news

Nikkei in Japan up 2.6% overnight and FTSE 100 currently up 1.3%.

Interesting for those of us that follow these things to see what happens when the American markets open later today.

The impact of this will impact upon every single one of us in some way.

Trump is an immensely popular character in the US. He won because of that.

The Democrats have fucked this entire election right from the off if you ask me.  Allowing Biden to go for a second term initially despite the fact it was plainly obvious he's losing his mental faculties was a huge mistake.  They then parachute in a candidate that is nowhere near as good as they could have had if Biden had just agree to do one term and proper selection process was carried out.  This was another "fuck you" to the establishment vote imo and whilst wild horses couldn't make me vote for someone like trump I can understand why his message was appealing to the disaffected. What happens now will be grimly fascinating......

Not at all. He won because the left is heading in the wrong direction. Immigration economy crime are massive issues. The country has gone to shit in the last 3 plus years (you could argue the world too.) so many campaigned that it was policy and party and not personality, trump himself repeatedly said you may not like me but the country is going in the wrong direction.

trump would have beaten any democrat candidate because the country has gone ‘bad.’ That’s why you’ve seen republicans win the popular vote for the first time in 20 years. It’s a massive push back on policy and the direction of the country.

Im not a trump fan but life has gone to shit under the democrats. You won’t get it unless you live here and have experienced first hand the change in the last 4 years.

not going to talk a lot about this as you all blasted me about this 4 years ago when I said the democrats in power would be way worse than republicans and trump.

You could be right. I expect a lot of it has to do with partisanship though, especially in the US, which is incredibly polarised. There'll be plenty of democrats pointing to sustained economic growth and modest wage rises as evidence that it has been a vast improvement on Trump, who oversaw huge deaths during COVID (not my argument). To me, it just highlights the ridiculous nature of society's metrics, which are largely beyond the control of the average politician and president (or prime minister), such as economic growth and inflation. You basically form a view of how things are going based on what team you support - seeing what you want to see. It's a system that, globally, is failing, with the general public just spectators being tricked into playing the meaningless voting game. It's on a downward spiral that is beyond the control of someone like Trump (or the democrats). Life for the average American will not improve under Trump, they won't be able to point to a single policy of his (unless it's targeted, specific to a small group) that has improved their lives beyond the margin, but he may give them the illusion of improvement as he clearly did for many last time round.

The perfect illustration of the system at play, is the supposed polar opposite positions taking place in the US and the UK. The UK has freed itself from under the boot of the Tories, while the yanks have ditched one old and senile guy. Yet if the system brings growth to the West, then it'll be because of both sides. If inflation falls then it's because of the "leftist" (there's nothing left about Starmer) policy in the UK and the right wing approach of Trump. What I hope the Trump presidency brings is the final realisation that they're not opposites, just as socialism and capitalism aren't, they are both exactly the same thing. I don't hold out much hope, I expect we'll back to the same "my billionaires are better than yours" shitfest we have today in 4 or 8 years time.

That and huge swathes of the population are clearly just horrible cunts.

Why? Because they didn't vote democrat? I'd be intrigued to hear where your virtuous boundaries begin and end. Where do you draw the line when labelling someone a cunt (in this case, you appear to be labelling @OrlandoDon, who has literally just posted inferring he voted for Trump, one)? For example, does supporting someone who continues to support and enable a genocide make you a cunt? What about supporting someone who pretends that perpetual economic growth is not only possible, but desirable, without the slightest concern for future generations? Or supporting someone who takes donations for corporations and billionaires in return for favourable policy? Would those people be cunts? No, of course not, because by that point you'd have just been choosing arbitrary moral red lines in a childish game. If you accept that politics is just one giant exercise in marketing, PR and propaganda, then you're effectively just measuring the degree to which people can be persuaded. Thus call Trump supporters cunts is the equivalent of calling a gambling addict a cunt, or the obese person who can't walk past the special offers at the till.

Not convinced by that, don't get me wrong though, I do appreciate you are stateside and have a better understanding of American voters and how they are feeling.  The reason I'm not convinced is if the Democrats had actually gone through a selection process it would have been someone fresh.  Harris was seen as part of the problem already given she was part of the Biden regime and the Republicans, rightly, said "you've been shite for the past 4 years why on earth would it be any better this time round?"  A new candidate could potentially have convinced voters they would be moving in a new direction which could have been enough to sway some of the swing states.  I think Pie is spot on in that video i posted above when he talked about how Trump will defo make changes.  They probably won't be good changes but the electorate had clearly had enough of being patronised by the political class and their supporters and this was "fuck you" vote just like brexit was if you ask me.   I do fear for America and what he will do now, he will take the gloves off and push every limit he possibly can.

Anyone know if (assuming they dont remove the rule or cancel future elections) Trump can only serve 4 years or has it reset so he can serve 8?

He's overweight and eats cheeseburgers for breakfast. He's not got eight years in him.

You appear to be equating supporting Trump with addiction to a vice which is interesting.

I just don’t buy in to anyone voting for a party who want to take the right to an abortion away from women, it’s horrific. Only complete cunts would support it. That and the extremely right wing and narrow minded view on immigration.

No, I'm equating calling people cunts for the way they vote with people who criticise addicts who are sold their vice. In other words, I'm criticising the caller of cunts. Although, I could extrapolate it further and criticise myself for criticising you for being drawn into the pathetic "them and us" game so completely that you think that "they" are cunts.

Frankly I find it strange that people have such adverse reactions to the outcomes of democracy. Surely if you believe in democracy as a system then you understand that's what you're signing up to? Because what you appear to be saying is that these people are cunts naturally, and when given the opportunity to vote for a cunt, those natural cunts vote for him. There is no room for people having been manipulated, misunderstood, tricked, taken in by false promises etc, they are simply unadulterated cunt. In which case, do you believe that there's some sort of magic cunt accumulator, whereby a single cunt will vote for Trump, but a mass of cunts would vote for Harris? Otherwise, why would you be so surprised by the results of democracy that you'd start calling people cunts? Personally, and to quote a famous man, I think there's great cunts on both sides.

Yup, I am one of the 72 million cunts so far who voted republican. I voted against democratic policy and for ‘normal’ more than I did for trump. I am not an uneducated idiot extremist racist nazi as you’ve heard on most media outlets here for months.

I can only comment from my experiences living here. I will add though, having been home in September and talking to my family, it’s amazing the amount of misinformation/bullshit I heard from them regarding the US. The media here is primarily democrat owned and pumps out news opinion/propaganda. Only Fox News gives you republican perspective, not saying they are innocent, but we don’t have fair and impartial news here. I guarantee the news you get over there from US is certainly one sided and not overly truthful.

From 2016-2020 I didn’t pay that much attention to politics and life seemed good. I was financially secure and could afford a house and a mortgage. I lived in LA, expensive place, and heavily democratic. Each year things got more left, the homeless got worse, and I stopped enjoying living in California. I was a teacher, a very left leaning profession, and was required to attend the People of Color Conference every year where I learned wokism, DEI, and white guilt/privilege. Trump at the end of his term gained the joys of Covid. Under Biden I was fired from my six figure job for not getting vaccinated, my kids were kicked out of school because their parents weren’t submitting proof of vaccination. We didn’t have Covid ID cards so couldn’t go to shops, sports venues, and bars/restaurants for a significant period of time.  The homeless tents and breaking bad RVs lined the streets (and I lived in Sherman oaks, a very nice area). There were used needles littering the streets, and most mornings I would find homeless people bathing and washing clothes in our pool. Crime increased significantly and I started only walking my dogs in certain places and before 10pm.

All major cities here are democratically run here and are all going to shit, especially those in democratic states. You can easily read and see this info online. Democratic policy is killing this country so I moved to Florida for ‘freedom’ and a safe happy and healthy life for my children. My wife and I brought our kids here, we had no jobs, had to find a house, and start again. Life here is normal, people are normal. I do not see Florida as a state full of far right extremist fascists as I heard on MSNBC today.

biden was a pawn. He didn’t run the country. Harris is another pawn. Neither did unscripted interviews or events and rarely spoke in public. Any democratic candidate would have been set up that way. It’s a machine. They campaigned on orange extremist fascist man is bad and he’s horrible. CNN today were crushed today and said that they should have said this more often. they didn’t say that people are struggling and hurting and simply wants a government to address inflation, crime, immigration etc. It’s so expensive here now, we complain about cost every day. Many of my friends cannot afford to buy houses, the costs here have sky rocketed. Energy costs a fortune. The country is in so much debt and sending endless funds abroad instead of fixing their own problems. The southern border is tragic. Crime is way up. In my opinion the democrats caused so many of these problems, it didn’t have to go this way.

Under trump and the republicans life seemed so much better and that’s why he won, we want that back. So many feel this way, and many don’t particularly like trump. He’s not that popular, he admits that too. It’s a vote and statement on bad policy. We didn’t have the crime, border issues, housing crisis, inflation, trump was an America first guy. I’m ok with that, we have so many issues here we have to address. Re abortion, trump stated during his campaign many times that he’s giving abortion decisions to each state. He has also softened his stance on abortion and is not looking to take the rights of women away as you hear from certain media outlets.

delighted with today and happy to be a cunt if that’s what this means. I truly believe this is the first step in heading back towards more common sense and normal, and this will have a positive effect outside of the US too in my opinion.

You can only do 8 years so he has 4 left. The person to watch is JD Vance, the VP. He has been tremendously impressive over the last few months, incredibly smart, eloquent, calm, and a real find for the republicans. Funny, charming, and has interviewed extremely well.
I expect they’ll have learned that when you do nothing for 3 1/2 years it’s hard to become president. I expect Vance to be very involved and out front as VP, and the next presidential candidate after trump. get trump for 4 then Vance for 8 will be the republicans plan.
