Why are they moaning about this now? Spurs fans chant "YID ARMY!" all the time. And suddenly it's a problem?

I'm waiting for Aberdeen fans to be reported to the RSPCA for offensive chants pertaining to sheep.  ::)

This was part of the program that prompted the thread, hence my comment about referring to the sectarian issues as racist.

typical bullshit. spurs fan in the office who's spent months slagging off pool and chelsea for their disgraceful behaviour suddenly not seeing the racism when it's his own team.

The head of the Society of Black Lawyers says he will complain formally to police if Spurs fail to take action within a fortnight to stop the chants.

In a statement, Spurs said their fans used the term as a "defence mechanism" against anti-Semitism from rivals.

But Peter Herbert said this "wouldn't make sense to a six-year-old".

...

However, Piara Powar, executive director of the Football Against Racism in Europe organisation, has criticised Herbert for being naive and questioned whether he properly understands football.

Peter Herbert is a publicity seeking idiot.  I hope his nuisance 'reporting' of all this petty shite is ultimately treated with the disdain it deserves.  Unfortunately, given footballing authorities' historic record of screwing the pooch when it come to the application of common sense, it really is more hope than expectation.

The Metropolitan Police has dropped an investigation into alleged comments by referee Mark Clattenburg towards Chelsea's John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata.

Police said there was no evidence an offence was committed during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Chelsea.

The Football Association launched its own investigation after a complaint by Chelsea that solely concerned Mikel - and that will continue.

Clattenburg has always denied the allegation he used racial words.

Chelsea's complaint came after the police had already begun its investigation and followed a thorough investigation, which they claimed was led by outside legal counsel and used information from interviews with club players and staff.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday: "Inquiries were made and no victims have come forward. The matter will remain as a recorded incident.

"Without a victim and/or any evidence that any offence has been committed, the matter cannot currently be investigated.

"If the situation changes and a victim and/or evidence to support an allegation of a crime comes to police attention, then further inquiries will, if appropriate, be made."

Except there is a victim because as we all know the old 'well theres no smoke without fire' mentality will make sure Clattenburg's card is marked for life.

So are we to presume this was actually fuck all but ot was all stirred up by the media into a racial frenzy?

Or that Yon chelsea players in the heat of the moment and with the adrenaline and anger at losing the game still running through the veins misheard something clattenburg said and reacted but then after sleeping on it thought 'oh fuck that was stupid'?

Because thats how im starting to see it?

Some interesting comments from Seedorf.  Given that football authorities are hopeless when it comes to dishing out suitable fines for this sort of thing, I don't agree with Seedorf.  While it's sad for the fans who just want to see a game, by walking off it sends out the message that footballers are getting fed up of racism and if UEFA can't deal with it, the victims will make the decision for them.

Hopefully its a big wake up call for football authorities in continental Europe.

I agreed with Seedorf to an extent. If the racialists know that players are going to react that much it's only going to encourage them. They're not likely to give all that many fucks about what the non-racialist fans think of them. But I appreciate that it's very hard to ignore it. Ultimately, as we all know the governing bodies have to stamp it out with harsh sanctions.

Very much this.  Previously I would have agreed with Boatengs stance and fair play to him and his team for actually going through with it.  But it's not the first time and just empowers the racists.

As i see it the issue is not with the racists but with the fact they are allowed to do it inside what is meant to be a controlled environment.

You are never going to get rid of racism in everyday life and to think you can makes you almost as blind and moronic as the racists themselves.

Ignoring the odd fuckwit in the crowd is one thing but when its an entire section or stand?

Football is expensive and it gets even more expensive if you put on a match and either before or partway through the game is abandoned due to something you are meant to be in control of - the floodlights, the turnstiles, ticket sales and the spectators. . Clubs and football authorities are not bothering to police it until the media run a story and an entire team walking off is a story. If it keeps on happening then the media will be in a frenzy.

A big issue with the policing is the stewards at the games don't have any real power and a large chunk of them are volunteers who signed up to help people to their seats or direct them to the snack bars etc. See how many volunteers you get when they are expected to confront racist, abusive, drunk and/or violent fans. At the moment I presume the extent of their actions to these fans is to point them out to the cops and then stand clear.

The needs of the many should supposedly outweigh the needs of the few so if it is supposedly only a minority of supporters as the clubs and authorities claim then stopping the game and not restarting until the cops evacuate/ arrest an entire section of supporters might be a potential solution. However the police will highlight the risk of this is yon section rioting and innocent fans getting caught up. Well innocent fans are already caught up in it and to an extent we are almost expected to self police/ shop the thug element in our own support. Perhaps the tannoy system could issue a warning naming the section(s) responsible. Ah fuck it thats far to idealistic.

Essentially all the talk about education, and campaigns with t-shirts isnt going to work with 'bunch of drunken football fans'.

Correct me if i'm wrong but did some of the real thug element suddenly vanish from our Ibrox away support when the club start putting names to each ticket? Cops arrested someone who had a ticket sub with 49B on it. The club checked the database and banned said person from future games. If the person with the ticket stub wasn't the one the club list then both were banned from future games.

Exactly how hard would it be to put a name to each ticket bought on the day? or perhaps just to take a photograph of each fan passing through the turnstiles and that picture be linked to the ticket they were handed?

Yes its big brother but at the risk of being right wing perhaps a big brother style response is the solution with situations like this?

But not enough is being done by the authorities, the fines being handed out are a complete joke.  Until high profile players start walking off, UEFA will continue to pay lip service to it.  As Tom has said, there's probably going to be a media frenzy now which is probably good.  If racists feel empowered by this then the authorities should start banning clubs or forcing them not to have their own support at games.

It’s reported Lazio could be forced to play at least one game behind closed doors, maybe even two, after repeated incidents of racism in the EuropaLeague.

The club was already on a suspended sentence following racist insults from sections of the crowd during the group phase, including the games withTottenham Hotspur.

A gang of around 300 Lazio ultras were spotted doing a Nazi salute during the 2-0 home win over Borussia Monchengladbach.Lazio had tried to argue it was a ‘militaristic salute,’ but UEFA are expected to come down heavily on the club.It seems certain the Europa League Round of 16 home tie with Stuttgart will be behind closed doors on March 14.There are also rumours in La Gazzetta dello Sport that UEFA could inflict a two-game ban on the Stadio Olimpico crowd.

Good to see Russian claims that its football isn't racist proved correct  ::)

Another country not worthy of getting the tournament.  Should be banned from Europe.

Totally Manc. Violence is common at most of their league and international home games as well as racist chanting. The awarding of world cups to both Russia and Qatar is just further evidence of how corrupt FIFA is.
