Stephen Thompson has resigned from his position on the board of the Scottish Premier League.

The Dundee United chairman's decision to quit comes under a week before detailed plans for league reconstruction are tabled to top flight clubs.

Last week, SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster said there was "unanimous" backing to plans to introduce 12 new teams into the league setup.

Proposals put forward would have seen the creation of a 12-team second tier, which would merge with the top flight mid-season and split into three divisions, each consisting of eight clubs.

Thompson was one of six members on the SPL's board. Ralph Topping, Neil Doncaster, Eric Riley, Duncan Fraser and Michael Johnston remain in their positions.

A statement from Dundee United read: "Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has resigned from the SPL board with immediate effect, due to professional differences."

Thompson was elected onto the SPL board in September 2011.
