I'd suggest that someone with a spare £20k lying about, who wants to put themselves through the ingominy of playing for macc. may well have been inclined to offer it previously, without having to embarrass their payers by being a lot fucking better than them.

pay 20k to play, lay it off with a bookie because you'll have advance notice of what game you'll play in and what to bet on.
