The Dons U20 side lost their first match of the season as Inverness Caley took all three points with a one-nil victory at Balmoor. The first half was a pretty even affair and looked like the opening game of the new season with both teams taking a while to settle in to the game. Inverness looked good on the counter attack but the best chance of the half came on 40 minutes when Ryan Esson made an instinctive save from a McKenna header. Dons keeper Danny Rogers made some good saves from Inverness attacks and looked comfortable overall as the tempo of the game increased towards half time. HT 0-0 Aberdeen started the second half much better and created more chances but Inverness continued to defend solidly. They sat in for much of the half and the Dons struggled to break them down. Then on the 76th minute, the Dons fell behind when an Inverness substitute scored just 5 minutes after coming on for the Highlanders when a gap opened up and he hit a screamer past Danny Rogers. A few minutes later Rogers made another great save to prevent the young Dons going two-nil down. Aberdeen continued to push for an equaliser in the remaining minutes but failed to find the net after missing a couple of guilt edged chances. It's early days yet but Neil Cooper will be disappointed his team didn't get off to a winning start. The young Dons took the lead on the 25th minute when Nicky Low pounced on a defensive mistake. Josh Magennis came close to doubling the lead on 41 minutes but his header missed by inches. Danny Rogers was forced into a fine save from Waters 4 minutes after the restart before Celtic equalised on 64 minutes when Atajic was left with a tap in. Aberdeen continued to play well throughout and were rewarded with a penalty on 82 minutes which also saw O'Connell sent off for the visitors. Nicky Low stepped up and scored the spot kick to hand the Dons the advantage. Hearts are playing kids because they have to but it's resulting in a team with players that fight for a win. Low and Smith in particular should be featuring at least from the bench most weeks by now. Goals at the start of each half from Craig Moore and Bob McHugh put the Dons on the backfoot, with McHugh adding a stunning third to kill the game ten minutes from time. The Dons lined up with a 4-1-4-1 formation. Craig Murray at left-back, and Marcus Campanile at right-back with a central defensive pairing of Michael Rose and Kieron Gibbons. Craig Storie sat in front of a central midfield two of Jamie Masson and Nicky Low, with Stephen O'Neill starting on the right flank and Gregg Wylde on the left supporting Lawrence Shankland as the lone forward. However, the Dons did not carry luck on their side at any stage in this game as they fell to defeat against a slick Motherwell outfit. I know what you mean Al, but they are doing well in the youth front too and (look at what he did at Falkirk too) it's down to a Dons Legend: Brian Grant - Senior Academy Manager Brian began his career in the early 1980s with Stirling Albion before joining Aberdeen in 1984. After spending over 12 years with the Dons and winning the Scottish Cup and League Cup he moved on to Hibernian in 1997 and spent one year with the Easter Road club before returning to his first club Stirling Albion to finish his career. He has worked with both Stirling Albion Youth development and the Falkirk Academy over the last three years, coaching the Under-17s and assisting the Under-19s sides. Following a radical overhaul of the youth system by Manager & Director of Football Craig Levein in the summer of 2009, Brian was appointed Senior Academy Manager and will be responsible for overseeing the development of players aged 15 up to professional youth level. mizer Posted December 11, 2013 Share Posted December 11, 2013 Aberdeen defeated top-of-the table Inverness in the Highlands this afternoon by four goals to two. Rose put the visitors ahead on 5 minutes when he lashed home a rebound off the bar before Shankland scored the Dons second on the turn from close range on 27 minutes. Murray then added a third on 38 minutes with a fantastic effort that gave Esson in the Inverness goal no chance. Inverness came out strongly after the break and Rogers was forced to make a number of excellent saves.
