107-year-old match poster unearthed

The poster was used in December 1907 to advertise an Aberdeenshire Cup tie between the Dons and Buckie Thistle at Pittodrie.

 

It was found tucked away at Buckie’s Victoria Park, and was brought to the attention of the AFC Heritage Trust, who have gathered an impressive collection of club memorabilia.

 

Buckie agreed to allow the Dons to have the poster, which was in poor condition, restored.

 

It’s believed the poster was designed by famous London artist Frank Dadd, who became well known for his classic advertising posters, particular during World War 1.

 

The work of renewal was painstakingly carried out by the Scottish Conservation Studio near Edinburgh.

 

This involved bathing the poster in special fluids to remove acids and stains.

 

Many small pieces of the poster had to be captured during this process and carefully placed – in jigsaw puzzle-style – in their positions on the poster as it was reassembled in one piece.

 

The final stage was to mount the restored poster in an acid free mount ready for framing.

 

The poster is now on display at Pittodrie’s Black and Gold Lounge, alongside other material from the early 1900s.

 

Buckie Thistle are to be presented with a limited edition print of the poster.

 

Dons fans will also have the chance to purchase copies to help cover the costs of the restoration.

 

As for the actual match, the Dons won that 3-0, despite fielding a mainly reserve side.

 

It also kicked off at 2.20pm to allow it to be finished in daylight.
