Aberdeen must go all out to ensure another memorable European night at Pittodrie.

 

The stadium has seen some legendary Euro occasions, and a sell-out crowd on Thursday will bring back memories of those glory days.

 

The fans have done their bit by packing out the ground. Now the players must respond with the performance of their careers.

 

Forget the shambolic display against Motherwell - that is in the past and the Dons must go into this match with confidence and self belief.

 

For the majority of Aberdeen players this will be the biggest game of their careers.

 

They need to produce a performance to match the occasion and prove that Aberdeen are capable of shocking FC Copenhagen to progress.

 

The key to defeating the Danish league champions will be a solid 4-4-2 which can fully utilise the wide players.

 

I hope Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood does not tinker with the formation and opt for a 4-5-1.

 

Copenhagen are packed with quality players so Aberdeen must press them hard from the outset and not give them time to settle into the game.

 

The Dons must be solid as a unit, close down the ball and force Copenhagen into making mistakes.

 

The key to Aberdeen progressing is the adoption of 4-4-2 coupled with hard work and steel in the tackle.

 

But they must tighten up defensively or suffer the consequences from a Copenhagen front line led by Swedish international striker Marcus Allback.

 

The Dons were a mess at the back in the first half against Motherwell. They must regain the defensive strengths that saw them qualify for Europe last season.

 

This is a game where skipper Scott Severin must stand up and be counted.

 

Severin's form has taken a dip in recent weeks and he was virtually anonymous at Fir Park.

 

If he wants to realise his ambitions of playing for Scotland again Severin must produce the goods in these high pressure games.

 

A lot of responsibility will be heaped on Severin's shoulders on Thursday and he must be more commanding, and lead by example.

 

Losing so comprehensively to Motherwell was the worst possible preparation for the UEFA Cup clash.

 

But a capacity Pittodrie will be there to drive the side on and I know first hand how important that can be.

 

If the Dons go into this game positively and keep it tight they can win.
